      It depends on your target customer. You provide the quality they expect. Eg When you go to McDonalds you (usually) get the quality you expect but if I gave you a big Mac in a five star restaurant you will be disappointed. I ma being a bit extreme but i think you get the point.

      I break down all the costs in the video. The net profit in most cases is what remains after deducting all staff and owners wages. ie if the owner is working there or you employ a manager you include their wages as a cost

    Interesting question. I've always suspected that the "higher ranked" restaurants make a killing with their outrageous prices and flimsy, highly decorated dishes with very little food... Then, you've got your personnel costs: A good team of cooks and professional waiters are hard to find, and who knows what wages/salaries they get paid?? ( ... and then there are all the common, day-to-day places to eat, where one assumes margins are quite low). Anyhow... beverages (from wine to refreshments) probably have margins of anywhere between 200 to 1500%!! That's where they get their money for free (... and what about the tipping "system" in the U.S.?!? That is outrageous too: The owners relying on customers paying 20 to 25% tips to help with burnt-out waiter's wages: Ludicrous) Best of luck with your channel!! 😃

      Some higher ranked restaurants do make good profits but most don't. They spend a lot of money on fit outs, try to absorb very high rents to get the best locations, etc. They have high food costs because they always try and buy the highest quality ingredients and have high wages to try and provide the best service hoping that business is going to continue to grow so the costs are absorbed. Unfortunately, things happen ie pandemics, high interest, market falls, bad management etc causing sales to drop and funds drying up.

    Is it more cost efficient to focus more on drinks such as cocktails, coffees etc. and minimise/simplify the food side of the business?

      IN most places the cost percentage/profit margin is around the same. There is less wastage with beverages. It boils down to knowing your customer and selling more of the more profitable items.

      @@bestrestaurantresults6760 thanks for your reply, that makes sense. Am planning a bar in evenings Japanese style and some decent high end food but maybe 5 items only. Also a brunch so I can get another set of revenue with a coffee focus and some Australian style quality breakfast options - again, limited menu to keep it simple and focused.

    I preach this all the time at my Pizza place and no one listens to me despite my title being chef, Its almost insulting having to make so many shitty pizzas because the customers want to mix and match everything under the sun as that forces me to cook it as best I can but with no knowledge of how It should look. Sometimes we get complaints from special orders and the fact they complain is even more insulting as a simple pizza I could have done in a flash but this person wanted me to spend 5 minutes trying to perfect artichoke hearts on a pizza.

    So if you’re starting out small and not confident that your business will do well, lease. If you have the means to do so, buy, so that the property value of your restaurant will grow with you.

    EXCELLENT VIDEO... I have had a little "Bistro" cafe and higher prices and I have had a 10'x 10' BBQ Shack... and it is not how much money you make... it's how much money you have left over... (Profit). Every TINY thing cost... Ice... plastic spoons... napkins... salt... etc... It all adds up... Thank you for sharing this great video.
