Thanks to Fly8MA for his video about exhaust and tie downs not always being good grounds. Here's the link to his video below. I would encourage you to watch his first. My video is my solution to make sure I can use either exhaust for a good ground. ua-cam.com/video/db-poIP6SAo/v-deo.html
Alternate Air Door
Переглядів 25421 день тому
After flying the RV for 12 years without an alt air door, I thought it was time to get it installed. In my opinion really not too much of a chance to ingest something into the airbox that would cause an issue but it has and does happen. Also discovered a fuel leak at the electric fuel pump inlet connection. Fuel leaks are bad so I am happy I decided to do this.
Measures I'm taking to try and get more than two years from an automotive alternator.

Added a heat shield and another blast tube between exhaust and aft end of the alternator. Hopefully will get more than two years of use from my automotive alternator. I mean, they last for many years in autos/trucks. The only difference must be because of heat! He's my attempt to fix this problem.
Switching oil saved my cylinder

Hangar Door Rails Replaced
Переглядів 1122 місяці тому
A big thank you to Mr. Bradley and Julius for a super professional job well done. This crew replaced the old, rusty and disgusting door rails all around our hangar. As you'll see, the old ones were a real mess. These guys swept up the debris with a huge sweeper not once but twice! Such a super job and they made it look easy! Definitely an upgrade!!!

This video involved the in-cockpit camera which is my really old GoPro. The gopro 11 is on the wing tip. Love that camera and the wifi ability to turn it on and off. I use my mac's iMovie for editing and although it's not too difficult, it's still labor intensive! A few hours goes into each video I create. Thanks for watching!
Evening flight with great views over the Delta, Bayway and Causeway bridges.

Boy are you (and Fly8MA) ever wrong!!! You don't need very low resistance (continuity as measured by a DVM) to bleed off static electricity from your airframe. Even if you have high resistance to ground (like a 100,000 ohms) you will quickly bleed off static electricity within a few seconds. (Just because you make a UA-cam video doesn't mean you are right.) P.S. Do yo have an FAA approved STC for that modification?
We don't need STCs where we're going.
Very Mickey Mouse. Static voltages are high enough to bridge the surface corrosion on the exhaust stack. Get some proper bonding braid and high temp hardware if you are going to do this 'improvment'. Aircraft Spruce comes to mind as a supplier. BTW those bits of sheetmetal and stuff holding the push/pull cable needs replacement with Adel clamps/stand-offs/nut-bolts-washers positioned on the tubes and then there is the fretting wear on your strut fairing...a bit of trimming or adjustment of the cowl...
Thanks for your input.
this all started badly with fly8ma using the continuity mode, not really appropriate for ESD testing. this mode can confirm only a low resistance circuit (under 50 ohms). Anything in the range of 1-2 MΩ or lower is absolutely fine for the purpose of dissipating a static charge. fly8ma probably knows this but decided to create a little controversy at our expense 😉
You are absolutely correct....
Been using these filters for 13 years on all my bikes. Had the chrome and black powder coat and after a while the chrome and powder coat peels off , the machine finished ones are the way to go had them replaced as the lifetime warranty them.
Do a walk around of your plane I really don't even know what kind of plane you have
Keep us updated on your first use of the alternate air source. Thanks. Good video. Sorry to hear about your flying friend. Condolences to the family.
Hope I never actually have to use it but would like to test it somehow. Might try to completely block the air intake from the front and with the alt air open see if engine will start on the ground. I'm sure it will but, you know, it would verify in my mind that it will really do the job if ever needed. Thanks for watching!
NO, the reason being you are not going to get rid of the "Hot Spots" in the alternator. You will have air coming from two directions so end up with very little cooling, I will be that there is some engineering in the internal cooling. My advice is get a aircraft alternator, mine is a plane power it's small light weight and will last over 2,000 hours.
The Aeroshell is a 1940s oil and the 20/50 is a more modern oil. The trouble is that The FAA certify anything and it is set in stone from then on.
was the aeroshell too thick and thats why it was getting into the topside of the cylinder? or do you think the additive cleaned out your oil control ring and kept the oil from getting onto the cylinder?
As stated below, try automotive header wrap. Keeps the heat inside the pipe It has been used for many years to keep temps down under the hood of high performance engines. It works. Beautiful plane. Just started on a RV8. Hope it turns out as nice as yours.
Great idea, I'll have to check them out.
in the last 10 yrs you are lucky to get 2/3 yrs from an aftermarket Alt ..have replaced 3 on sisters Toyota Camry
Did you change the fan on the alternator, an engine on the airplane turns backwards to an automotive engine. So you have to have an aircraft fan on the alternator that turns backwards of an automotive. It won't cool enough with an automotive fan.
Good eye an you are correct, On a plane the alternator is running in reverse compared to a car. The alt. doesn't care so makes no difference... except as you mentioned, to the airflow. This is why I now have total of 4 ambient air blast tubes in place. I do believe it's going to help.
.. use stainless hose clamps on your Ends instead of what they Supply, unroll & soak in a bucket of water before Applying so that it Stretches a bit ..
.. try header wrap on that exhaust pipe, i believe it might work better for you .. 🧰👨🔧
That was exactly what I was going to say.
you might consider an aftermarket alternator designed for heavy duty / harsh environment use.. like Mechman Racing alternators.. Mechman is known for their high amperage alternators for audio sound systems.. but they also build super nice 170amp heavy duty racing alternators.. big heavy duty diodes.. about $350... way less than certified... and should last longer than your run of the mill automotive alt..
I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the information!
That looks like a good plan you formulated to improve the longevity of your alternator, heat being the real nemesis of solid-state electronics components. I know that in automotive applications, the decline in the battery health can impose a higher load on the alternator, as the alternator is forced to operate on a longer duty cycle to keep the battery fully charged, resulting in a shortened alternator life. I was wondering if the replacement of a lead-acid battery with a lithium battery with increased charge capacity might impose less of a working load on the alternator and thus extend its life. I'm assuming that the plane's electrical system functions similarly to that of a typical automotive system, with the battery essentially being the power supply to the electrical load and the role of the alternator being mostly to maintain the battery's state of charge.
Hey, you are correct as far as my aircraft electrical system, pretty much just like a cars. I know my battery is in good shape. I've checked it. Thank you for your comment.
@@paulschannel3046 Good luck in how it works out.
Most standard alternators go bad due to failed regulator rendering the whole alternator defective. My solution would be an alternator with seperate external regulator on a isolated heatsink. The heat disipation can be monitored independently also.
Thanks for the information! I believe in the two failures I've had, the first was like you said, the voltage regulator and the second was the at least one diode. As you can see in the video, the exhaust, literally about 1000 degrees at the point, just a couple inches aft of where the electrical components are located at the aft end of the alternator. I am HOPING this shielding and increased cool airflow helps.
Beautiful plane - Great videos! Was your original PP alternator a 99-1012?
Hey Dave and thank you. I don't know what the original was. Whatever came with the kit. I just new when it quit after 5 years I didn't want to pay the prices ACS and others were asking... not to mention the wait time to receive it. Thats why I made the switch. I feel I should be able to get a decent life span from these so hence the push to keep it cooler. Happy Thanksgiving.
Right on! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours also!!
Was the Shell Oil causing stuck rings?
No the rings weren't stuck. I don't know why this happened... no clue. I had low compression on this cylinder and removed it. It was honed and new rings placed by the guy that gave me the advice in this video. After the hone, I flew with mineral oil for break in and when everything stabilized, I switched back to my usual Aeroshell oil. I don't remember exactly but I'm guessing almost a year, lower plug in cylinder two started fowling. That's when I borescoped and saw this problem of pooling oil. Like I said, I have no clue why because I did everything by the book. So I took the experts advice of switching oil before pulling the cylinder and this is the result. That Aeroshell 100 is some thick stuff. I "feel" like the Phillips XC 20W50 with one bottle of Avblend at each oil change is covering better. My experts advice really paid off. Bonus, It's cheaper too!
15 psi for a bypass is a little bit on the low side. If you're running 40 to 60 lb of oil pressure that means a very high amount of the oil going through that filter is going through the bypass valve not the oil filter
The strange thing is is that Automotive filters usually filter to 20 microns. Just how is it that an aircraft oil filter will only filter down to 50 to 70 microns?
Shoutout summerdale, where gspd drops off the homeless people they kidnap and drive out of town 😂
A can of what?
AVBLEND. According to my expert, He recommends adding one at each oil change.
AVBlend, oil aditive for small aircrafts
Hi mate, I'll back you on this one! I had a Conti A65-8 and it ran average on Aeroshell. Switched to Penrite 20W-60 and it was a different animal. No overheating on high throttle climbs, kept pressure waaay better at hot idle, drain interval doubled without issue or discolouring. Seems you're having similar results. Good on you!
Yep. I'm sold on this. An added bonus was the Phillips I went to is cheaper than Aeroshell by a few dollars a quart! Glad you're getting improved results with your switch as well!
Glad to see the return flight! I live in Branson Missouri and really enjoyed your video on this trip. I'm a student pilot myself.
Excellent work 👍👍
what a lovely flight! thanks for taking us along with you!
Thank you for watching!
I do my flight training there at Foley. Great place to learn to fly.
It absolutely is. Are you in training now? I'm in hanger 28 on the south ramp. As you pull into the airport, look right and the last one on the right is my hanger. I am out there often. If you see me out there stop in!!!

Thank you sir!
I enjoyed watching your video Paul glad you got to see your friend and your family. It sure is beautiful up there love hearing your stories about you growing up little sidekick that was funny.I've always enjoyed listening to you telling your stories about your life love all your videos Paul you have done a great job making all these videos they are very interesting and helpful. And all those sunsets they are beautiful Paul.❤️
wow that's great beautiful sunset
Nice sunset.
Great flight. Foley Airport in Alabama
You are correct. 🙂
It's beautiful.
Sure. But guessing that you did choose that life (and possibilities, incl extra expenses)?? Then. I thought that anybody with enough money for an airplane (any) and all the fees that come with the privilege, would have no problem spending $500-$1000 a day, in room, car and partying? “Certified” is not assurance of anything. A real pro would buy the best, most available alternator and test it himself! That’s real certification!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Great and interesting life you got sir. Thank you for sharing your stories and passion. Greetings from a Spanish engineer and pilot student living in France.

Hello and thanks for your comment!
Beautiful up here.
Love this.❤
Oh no glad you found it.
What an _excellent_ video! Who would've thought that a video covering checklists could be so interesting? Your comprehensive checklists are something I wish I'd had when I was flying (medically grounded as of March 2020). Awesome work, Paul! 😊
Keep it up man
This might be going a little far, but it may help to keep an inventory of the contents of the toolbox and parts before and after the work.
It's not too far at all. I've been thinking about different ways I can improve so something like this never happens again. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
@@paulschannel3046 shadow board or foam cutout helps. WHen i worked as maintenance in prisons i had a basic toolbox of what i needed most days, and a number on it so i could count it in and out through security each day. If i needed a different tool i'd bring it in under a separate entry document - that way i always knew my count was correct and i don't have to look for a lost tool
@@paulschannel3046 also, CHECKLISTS socket 10mm socket 12mm drive shaft 3/8" cutters blade etc check them off when you finish and your toolbox is on a bench
Another option might be to put everything you might use on a tray on a scale and tare it out at the start then check for zero at the end
@@AndrewPrice2704 That's a good idea too. Thanks for your input Andrew!
