How to make a silver ring 💍 Lost Wax Casting - Sand Casting
in this video I attempted (and eventually achieved) making a ring using an ancient form of jewelry making called Lost Wax Casting!! from what I can find it was used in all parts of the world to create bangles, buddha statues and everything else under the sun!!
SUCH a cool process!! I think it's pretty common now and I see jewelers everywhere using this skill and mode to create their beautiful pieces.
as always - I'm just doing what I'm doing - I wouldn't necessarily recommend all the ways I do things as far as safety goes, so just take everything with a grain of salt and be careful!!
thanks for watching!!!

You did a really great job. I just made an owl cuff bracelet for my daughter. We had a very fun & significant interaction with a great horned owl recently, so I made her the silver owl bracelet as a Christmas gift to her. I'm pretty sure the reason your solder kept flowing on the top piece of silver was because you weren't heating the bottom piece as much, so the top silver plate reached the flow temperature much quicker. You essentially sweat soldered the pieces together, which is a fine way to do it, as long as you get both pieces of silver up to temperature. Some people like to use a raised soldering platform that you can heat the piece from below, so that both pieces of silver are heated evenly. You can also try focusing your flame on the lower piece a little longer before focusing your flame on the top. Personally, i would sweat solder a bit chunk of solder on the bottom piece, then position the top piece, and then apply the heat as evenly as possible. You will know the solder is flowing once the top piece sinks down slightly. Great video. I hope that helps you in your silversmithing journey.
@@RockyMountainBear I’ve seen the raised platforms!! I’ll have to invest in one of those. Thank you 🙏
This is beautiful. Amazing job 👏🏻👏🏻

Hi. Try to buy a jewelry crucible with thin walls. It will help to save time and smelt silver faster. It can be not that easy to find (I went to another country to get them), but it's worth it. I think in your country there might be stores for jewelers. I wish you great successes and a Merry Christmas PS.Beautiful ginger cat ;)
@@Andzej3 thanks for the tip!! i will definitely look into that! thank you. he’s a good cat 😁
Great job, you're a genius! I recently found something interesting, and I wanted to ask you if you know anything about "Metal Clay"?
@@gisnuilati i was just watching a silversmith work with metal clay the other day!! it does look super cool!! i’ll have to do some more research but maybe I’ll give it a try 😁
@@iveybolthouse I watched a video about "Metal Clay" a long time ago and had already forgotten about it, but recently I came across it again and decided to tell you, thinking you might not know about it. @@gisnuilati thank you for bringing my attention to it!! I had seen it briefly but definitely didn’t realize how cool it is!! I’m excited now 😝 I learned all about it last night hahah and ordered some. I’ll for sure make a video of the process when it comes in!!!

Dude. I lost my ring. Happened at work like a week ago. Some rings aren't replaceable. Don't know why I am telling you this. But it's on my mind. Anyway it was a old thing. It was silver and turquoise. A protection ring. Navajo from Arizona. It was a bear claw or foot print. My just a idea. If you need ideas. But keep it up 👍. I hope I find it. It's under snow I think.

Have you heard of using plasticine as a base- set your wire on top and make a little wall around your design and then pour a little mixed plaster over-wait till it dries and then remove the plasticine. Turn your design over(which is now stuck into the hardened plaster) and then solder without fear of melting. I watch the smith's from India. Great video!
@@andreak001 😮😮 that sounds awesome, I will definitely look into it!! thank you for the suggestion!! 🙏
Great Video! Only the Citrine is a heated Amethyst, sorry for sying it!
second time i heard this!! i bought it at a gem shop and they said it was citrine but i believe you(: Now I’m interested haha - how do you tell the difference?
@@iveybolthouse hard to explain i am specialist, i will try! bring it back, if you spend more than 40 bucks! first citrin is seldome and cost a lot ,1 carat aaa quality beginn 40 bucks! so if you pay 30 bucks for 15 carat you know whats going on, A gem seller have to now that! citrine coloure is yellow, green/yellow, light yellow, a bit of dark yellow and finish. your stone have a darkbrown/red/orange top and beginns clear. look at amethyst its clear and then the top purple, this nice fraud people take them in to heater for long time and the colour change to your stone. i hope you you know the difference now better. keep in touch, can always help something! You can have real citin from me. greatings from Austria!

Are you using only easy solder? Or do you use medium sometimes? That could help your soldering process. Although using the medium solder I've melted thin bezels.
@@BRadWilson3 i used medium solder for the base and then easy solder for the top pieces.. i think it might possibly be my torch? or just time and technique honestly haha watching it back I could’ve been more careful with where I was torching - could be a couple things 😁

You need to stretch the skin while doing this. It is why the lines are not sharp and clear. This is why it's not recommended to tattoo your own arms, and instead to tatto your upper legs instead. You should also practise, practise, practise on fake skin until you know the depth, feel and flow of everything.
I loved how it turned out! And you inspired me, too 🥰🥰

Well done, you are definitely on the right path☺ Watching your video (at around 6:30-6:35), during that part I would advice you to practice leading the solder with the flame. Solder follows the flame where it is the hottest, so practice aiming and controlling the flame correctly. It can be hard to do in the beginning, but with practice and repetition I think you will get the feeling for it☺ alternatively, you can also lead the solder with a soldering pick, personally I use my tweezers since they are already in my hand🤪and of course, as you also insightfully commented, keeping the surface clean, but also the flux as clean as possible, too. The barn owl is my favourite owl so I am particularly fond of your creation! Keep practicing with much repetition, and don't be afraid to make mistakes -- it is fixable, so hakuna matata🐞
@@Aethelbeorn-l9u thank you!! I appreciate all of your tips ☺️ I tried to make sure I was heating it thoroughly so it would flow to the right places but I can see pretty clearly watching it back that I didn’t haha - multitasking is hard 😝 but yes, i know it will all come with practice and time. My favorite as well!! Thank youu ☺️
