Prakash Paunikar first heard the melodious strains of the sitar at a concert by Lt. Pandit Ranjan Ganguly, a disciple of the renowned sarod maestro Lt. Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. The music was captivating, and Prakash felt an instant and compelling urge to learn how to play the sitar himself.
But he had to wait. As a B. Tech student at IIT, Bombay, his academic challenges were many and his free time was minimal. The passion for sitar however still drove him to get some basic sitar lessons from Lt. Pandit Ranjan Ganguli during last year at IIT. After graduation Prakash pursued his love for the sitar with full passion and dedication. Early in 1996, he met Lt. Ustad Shamim Ahmed Khan a
veteran sitar master from the Agra gharana who was also the senior most disciple of the great Lt. Bharat Ratna Pt. Ravi Shankar himself! Prakash’s talim under Lt. Ustad Shamin Ahmed Khan was complete and unwavering.
