You didn't mention it but letting the elbow of the lead arm break is also important. Trying to maintain a straight arm is really hard on the shoulder joint.

Van Phillips has been the most useful source of online coaching since I took up golf a few years ago. I remember watching this video and the comment about “ getting on the range and finding your own grip” and “what’s best for you” I’m 71, playing bogey golf and still drop in on VP…… he is the best, for me, on here.

Not long ago I asked Jack if he preferred to address the ball with the clubface open, square or closed. Jack looked at me with that piercing stare: "I've never seen a really good player set it square or closed at address," he said. Then he explained that because you generally set the club so the face is one-quarter inch or so behind the ball, it needs to be slightly open to the target line at that point. If it looked square and you didn't manipulate it during the swing, when the club returned to impact it would be slightly closed, causing a hook. Setting the clubface slightly open at address allows you to: • Release the club fully without fear of hooking. • Swing the club naturally with relaxed arms for maximum clubhead speed-and therefore more distance. • Develop better feel for how the club is aligned as it swings through impact. Jack got this from the best….Ben Hogan.

Hey, Van. You just slayed a dragon -- the idea that the golf swing is purely rotational, without a lateral element. I've known this for a while, but I also know that a lot of pros teach that the swing is purely rotational. Slow motion film footage of Ben Hogan (at least later in his career) reveals a definite lateral slide that begins even before he's finished his backswing. Thank you for your confirmation. (Great first name, Van. Reminds me of the great Van Morrison -- Northern Ireland's gift to mankind.

Too much basketball is the culprit for my right wrist break down. In basketball you flip the wrist as you dribble, shoot and oftentimes pass. I have played literally hundreds and hundreds of games. This right wrist flip is killing my game. I am right handed player by the way.

Good info but ball is in back of your stance on actual shot, not neutral and 5% open is not nearly enough and stress you must regrip clup after opening it. Release low and to left for best results
