    I used to remove my chain and soak it it melted wax. Everything stayed very clean but I am not that ambitious anymore. I don't even have a support. I just run the chain backwards a few times, then use a paper towel to clean off the excess.

    Good talk Grizzly Granny! I have had the Sabre spray, but have never yet had occasion to use it. Before I had it, a few years ago, on a very rural tiny road, with a house only every mile or so, two large dogs came charging down a very long driveway of about 50 yards, clearly set on getting at me and my cycling buddy on a bicycle. I was on my low-slung ICE Qnt trike, at perfect biting level. My friend was scared and asked: "What are we going to do Steve?" Since a huge forested hill was directly in front of us, precluding an easy escape, we were sitting ducks! I told my friend to stop, look straight ahead (not at the dogs), and just remain frozen in place. We both did that. The two huge aggressive animals came to a sudden stop about ten feet from us, apparently losing all motivation to continue with their questionable actions. At that point, the owner appeared in his garage way up the long driveway, called the animals back, and apologized profusely for what had occurred. This was refreshing that an owner actually had some empathy for the fear that sets in when cyclists are attacked by dogs, and I was very appreciative of his supportive attitude! I have also experienced dog owners who have, believe it or not, blamed me for riding past their house, and have told me to ride elsewhere, fully oblivious to anyone else's feelings and needs but their own. Another Sabre product I have is a S-1009 stun gun with anti-grab technology. I have also never used this defense product. Being personally well trained in defensive tactics as a former law enforcement officer, I have come to realize (after buying these Sabre products several years ago) that I would prefer to have my hands free for self defense ... just my preference. But for me, I have never been assailed by a person at all, and the charging dogs have never actually contacted my body, so I am fortunate. One day while walking home in my residential neighborhood from the public library, carrying my laptop computer, two pit bulls came charging at me very aggressively, at 45 degree angles of attack. I was at the curb on the opposite side of the street. My only defense "tool" was my laptop in a laptop bag, which I began swinging back and forth in front of me to keep the two vicious dogs at bay. The owner then emerged from his garage, yelling obscenities at me, saying that I should leave his dogs alone!!! He called the animals back, and I informed him I was going to call the police, to which he replied in an angry voice: "Go ahead! I don't care!" I later learned from neighbors that the man was a local drug dealer, after the house became vacant (he was arrested, and the landlord evicted him for dealing drugs out of the house). I think my secret on my cross country trike journeys is that my beard is growing out because I don't shave on the rides, and pedaling all day for days on end, on a human powered tricycle, I probably appear to be some unsavory transient bum, and potential human predators might see me as more of a threat to them than they could post to me. Even on my remote roadside camps in the middle of nowhere, I've always been left alone ... but I can see that a solo female would be in a different reality. steve

    That's a very useful ramp for those two large trikes! It's great to be able to order something like that pre-made rather than having to fabricate it yourself. It makes quick and easy work of loading and unloading! I used to live in Colorado, a tiny town of 200 people called Lake City, back in the 1980s. Back then, I was not even aware of recumbent trikes. A trike would have been perfect for the back roads, all of which were dirt, from 8,000 feet elevation and up. steve

      That's really sad that you have a rail trail, but do not have good access to it. We are looking at riding the Mickelson Rail Trail in the Black Hills soon...it is well maintained and I have never seen any ATVs on it. Don't think they allow anything motorized, except for e-bikes/trikes which are allowed on it...of course pedestrians, etc are as well...and possibly horses. They have volunteers on bikes called the "Trail Patrol" that monitor such things as well as safety issues or if anyone is in distress. Love that. Very well organized and run. --GG

      Hi, Don & Ruth Ann! Great timing for your trip! Depends where in Colorado you will be visiting. Northern Colorado, the Front Range Foothills, the Western Slope, the High Mountains, and the Southern Mountain ranges all vary slightly, but generally Mid to late Sept. and some areas into early October. There are many websites that will give you maps for the best times to see the leaves change depending on the geographical area, if you can do an internet search. You are correct! If it is a really windy day, as we have often here in this area of the Rocky Mountains, we may change the position of the shoulder mic. It has not happened often, but if the wind begins to interfere with our radio transmissions, then we reposition as necessary on our trike, or even to our clothing in the neck area somewhere. This works fine for us. Good point!--GG

    Great Video. Yeah I have used walkie talkies for a while riding with my trike friends. I have used more expensive and complicated GMRS radios because I like to tinker with them and do other things with them, but GMRS works with the same frequencies that the FRS radios (like the ones you are using) use. So some of our riders can use inexpensive radios and still listen and transmit to the GMRS radios. I will suggest these radios you recommended to some of our other riders who dont want to mess with more complicated ones!

    Wondered if e-bikes or electric assist bikes would be acceptable on those mornings. You always run the risk of running into a Karen that insists otherwise.

    • @TrikeTalkin
      @TrikeTalkin 2 місяці тому

      YES. On the day we went, we checked the info on the website to verify AND we called. They allowed ebikes and etrikes. Gary and I used as little e-assist as possible, but a little boost now and then came in handy on some of the inclines. No Karen's that day....grateful about that. In fact, had a few cyclists (2 wheeled) that commented to us that they wished they had a bit of e-assist that day! BJ and Jo on Out and About on the Recumbents live in Co. Springs, and they have a couple of vids from those rides. Jo has an e-assist and BJ did not (at that time). Hope you can make it some time. Just check before you go in case some of their ride rules change. Hopefully not. Blessings, GG

      @@TrikeTalkin Thanks, I've done the loop road with e-bikes before and I'm certainly glad I had it. I've lived in the area for about a year and I'm not sure I could manage without the assist. So, I was wondering about the no motor vehicles day if that would remain true.

    • @TrikeTalkin
      @TrikeTalkin 2 місяці тому

      I think I even printed up the Motorless Mornings page/paragraph where they had a sentence specifically giving permission for e-assist bikes and had it with me on the ride in case someone approached us about that! They just did not allow cars/trucks etc. during the "Motorless Mornings" hours. People were out there skating, riding skateboards, riding those one wheel devices, etc. Just no cars/truck traffic. One never knows these days, because regulations on trails have become quite varied. Gary & I got on a multi-use trail in Denver we had not ridden before, and were told by a cyclist passing by that we were not allowed on that trail. We returned to the trail head, and there it was, in the tiny print. Also, I think some people misunderstand what "No motorized vehicles allowed" means. Many times, that applies to motorized scooters, etc. and not to bikes/trikes. It can be frustrating and does require a fair amount of research before going, at least here in Colorado. Trike ON! -GG

Yes, since we live in rural Colorado we opted for the larger trikes (Utah Tike SunSeeker CSX Fat Tads) with the suspension, and fat tires so we can "off road" and also ride in snow. That does require a larger vehicle to stow 2 of these out of sight and out of weather. However, our small trailer works great as well, if we are not going to leave the trikes unattended, and if we are parking to ride at a trailhead that has the longer parking spaces. We always have a tarp and tie down straps handy in our unpredictable weather, and that system works great in rain or winter weather here as well... There are other light weight and even folding trike options for those who do not want or need off-roading capabilities, and have smaller vehicles to transport their trikes. Happy Triking!-G.G.

    I've installed light plywood on the outside panels - you could just do the one that you walk on - find the cross bars a little awkward to feel safe walking on. - I'm loading into a full size van.

      So far we're agile enough to step on a bar, but for those who cannot, great idea! Did you put some type of non-skid tape on the plywood for friction? With out back issues, that would make the ramp too heavy to manage...but great idea!--Happy Triking! -GG

      Good morning, and thank-you! It's amazing how we miss riding those trikes when we are unable due to weather or other. We were out on this past Wed. on country roads, some really rutted and wash boarded ones. We did not take the camera that day, and I wish we would have! It was a 4x4 off road experience on a 3 wheeler! The fat tires and the full suspension really are a must for these types of roads. I just found our I have to have a mass on my right ovary removed the week after Mother's day...but I am trusting the LORD that I will be back out there riding soon. Doc said 3-6 weeks... I am working on those abs over the next few weeks so they are in shape (as much as possible) to get back on my trike quickly. I have a couple vids ready to go while that is going on. I do want to thank you for watching and wishing you Happy Trails and Be Safe Out There!--GG

      I have two favourite ride areas here in Colorado Springs. One is the paved Cottonwood Creek rec path that goes from Powers Boulevard Southwest to Nevada avenue. It passes through Cottonwood Park which is a joy to ride circles in and just gape at the surrounding scenery. 2nd is the frontage road area that is north of woodman road going East from marksheffel to the town of falcon. There is a lot of small acreage homes north of the frontage road. Very little traffic in this area where you can ride quietly for miles.

    Hi. Thank you for the video - first time I heard about motorless morning ! How challenging was the climb in the loop ? I don’t have assist on my ICE adventure and I fully converted Catrike to be electric for my wife who can’t really use her legs much. She really wants to do this event in upcoming April 28th but she worries my legs aren’t quite ready :) ( we normally ride around Dallas , but we do have second house in CO , just never taken trikes here yet ).

    • @TrikeTalkin

      Hi! In my opinion, the inclines on the loop would be really tough on a recumbent without e-assist. We encountered riders on 2 wheeled bikes (no e-assist) struggling to get up a couple of the inclines. On a recumbent trike without e-assist, I suspect the inclines might be a challenge for sure. Gary and I both used low to moderate e-assist with appropriate gearing on the inclines only. Hope this helps! If you decide to go, look for us and say hello! Blessings & Happy Trails-GG

    • @TrikeTalkin
      @TrikeTalkin 5 місяців тому

      Hello! Great question with these bigger recumbents. In the summer, we usually transport them in the back of our truck with a camper topper. We purchased a 3 part, hinged, folding metal frame ramp from Harbor Freight. Lifesaver. We roll one trike up first, scoot it over a bit, and then roll the second on up the opposite direction. Secure the ends near the truck gate with a tie-down strap, fold the triple ramp up and it just slides up in between the trikes' wheels and fits perfectly. It is a piece of cake, even for us, and takes about 5 minutes total! We place a kids' styrofoam boogie board at the end between the trikes and the gate so there is no rubbing. Our truck in not 4 wheel drive, so in the winter, we may drive my Jeep and small trailer with the trikes on that positioned the same way. Opposite directions and with a tie down strap to secure. Use the same ramp. Much less work that when we had two wheel ebikes, and loaded them on a traditional bike rack, by the way. If my Jeep Unlimited was a scosh longer, I could fit my trike in there, but it is a tad too short inside for these large fat tad CSXs. Thanks for watching, and keep on triking! Blessings, GG

    Sorry I didn't write earlier. You pre-op video really hit home with my wife and me. She has survived two cancers, breast and ovarian, and one open heart surgery to correct a defect she was born with but which was not found until she was 64 years old. So we know how fragile life is. She was really impressed with your last video telling everyone to be diligent in keeping track of their health in this age of specialists. She told her doc she needed a hysterectomy because she had post-menopausal bleeding and thought it might be ovarian cancer. Our GP and two specialists were not going to believe her, but she insisted she needed the surgery, so a third specialist finally did it and found the cancer. SO YOU ARE SO RIGHT that it's vital to Keep up with your body's signs and let your doctor know everything you feel and also, as you said, keep track of everything that's done to you. You have probably saved a life, or lives, because of the advice you gave in that one video. THANK YOU! We are wishing you only the best, of course. We love your channel.🙂 [edit] My wife's breast cancer was 24 years ago, ovarian 7 years ago, and heart surgery 8 years ago. We are grateful for every day we have together. She is your age and I'm 77.

      I am so very THANKFUL for your comments and for sharing this difficult journey. Your wife is a strong, vigilant woman. Our gut instincts are usually right, and we need to pay attention to them. It took a lot of guts and perseverance for her to keep on advocating for herself throughout all those docs brushing off her very valid (and correct) concerns. I am sure you two have shared her story many times and indeed, saved many other lives in the process. Her story also proves that each trial can be overcome and there can be years to celebrate live with those we cherish. We do need to keep records of tests, and be our own health "general contractor" or advocate when it comes to these things. Do you two ride? It sure brings Gary and I joy to get out there and absorb some sunshine and breathe some fresh air during our days. I am so glad you responded, and have blessed Gary and I tremendously! @@TrikeTalkinThank you, too. I'm sure you and your husband, and my wife and me, are not the only ones who have crazy medical stories to tell. It's a miracle human bodies live as long as they do, with all those weird parts all working together to try to get everything right all the time. --- We are waiting to get my wife a trike until we pay off some debt in a few more months, and until she and her doc decided whether she needs a procedure, this time to try to eliminate the A-fib in her heart. Sounds like you have a good plan in place. My AF was much more of an issue after my heart attack, but I think between the CPAP they prescribed (my sleep apnea, made my arrythmias worse) and my regular trike riding, the AF and other arrythmias have settled down significantly. Keep me posted! Gary found his trike on FB marketplace at about half what mine cost, and it is nearly identical, which was really fun. I hope you guys have a recumbent trike business where you live, and she (and you) could test drive some different styles to see what works best for her body, and then look around for preowned. The tadpole style we ride is VERLY stable, and easy to get in and out of. She will LOVE it. --GG

      @@TrikeTalkinWe'll have to just be sure to not let it slip out, while we're in a bike shop, that we're there to test ride as many as possible and then go home and search for a pre-owned one of our favorite! That might be bad if we ever needed a bike mechanic at that same place! I think we'll probably buy new because when you think about it, if you have to drive, say, 500 miles to see a used trike, you've spent money on gas, food, and lodging anyway. I ride a Gekko tadpole but I think I'd like to sell it and buy a fat tire tad either Sun or Trident with a motor. I test rode a trident fat tad and wish now I had bought it......cushy wonderfully smooth ride. Well, we'll stay in touch.
