I guess there is no chance of scraping the sills on the break-over if you do it that way.
That made me chuckle Colin 😅. Maybe this could be classed as an advanced driving tip 😁. - Scott
@@ScottandAlana4x4 Thanks for the reply. It reminds me of one of my early motoring experiences. We toured North Yorkshire in a 1962 Fiat 600D Multipla that had a frightening 25HP from its 767 cc engine - it did not do hills. So on heading down into one valley I was transfixed by the steep hill on the other side and accelerated hard down hill in hope of climbing the hill with a bit of inertia. Unfortunately I failed to notice the hump-backed bridge at the bottom before it was too late. I suspect it is the only time a Multipla has ever became airborne.
@@ColinMill1 That's an amazing life story to have in the bank! 😅 That poor elastic band under the bonnet must have been going like crazy. 😁 If only dash cameras were around back in that day 🤣. I've done something similar but on 2 wheels when I somehow managed to totally misjudge how much of a kick upwards a bridge had. Cue me doing something that Evel Knievel would've been proud of 😁. - Scott
@@ScottandAlana4x4 It's all good fun so long as we get to walk away afterwards. I guess after 50 years of driving or riding (or even walking - the source of my closest call ever) most people have had a few interesting moments however careful they have been.
Great entertainment lol My thoughts are you needed to swap places with Alana as the Lady appeared to be more informed about the GB50 than Scott 🙂 and lastly you made a point of saying about the over ride and be aware the units bypasses the safety system then promptly disconnected the unit while it was still in over ride mode and placed it on the ground where there was a chance the cables might touch, They didn't in this instance but you infered by your actions it was an acceptable practise, Whilst most educated folks would turn it off first there are those amoungst us less inclined to use common sense.
Hi Kevin 👋. You also failed to mention that there was a chance of random lightning striking us while we performed such dangerous acts! Or that the car hadn't been fully certified as safe during this multi-million pound production. What can I say, I'm an absolute daredevil, a menace to society and living life on the extreme edge while making this video... 😅 But in all seriousness, thank you for your constructive criticism, it is all duly noted and taken onboard. Also thanks for taking some of your time to watch this video of ours 👍😃. - Scott
Hello folks, I was thinking of getting a Freelander 2 as my next car in a few years time, because of the 4WD. I like your honest opinions and feedback, and I would like to know if!! they are reasonably reliable, and is there some basic information you could pass unto a novice such as mileage, service costs roughly speaking. Great videos which are really helpful, keep up the good work!
Hi Ross 👋. Much like most cars, they are only as reliable as to the level of maintenance the previous owner has put into the car 😃. With a Freelander 2, it's on a slightly bigger scale due to it being a 4 wheel drive with a fair amount of sensors and wiring. Let me explain a bit more... Most owners will look after the engine by changing its oil and filters, coolant changes, fuel filter changes and maybe if you're really lucky, timing belt and water pump changes 😁. A Freelander 2 might also have it's brake fluid changed in it's time too! By this point, the previous owner either doesn't want to pay any more than they need to to keep it running, or they are just totally unaware of the 4 wheel drive system. This is where the problems start creeping in. The PTU (power transfer unit) never gets an oil change. The rear diff never gets an oil change. The Haldex never gets a new filter and its oil changed. Maybe even the gearbox fluid is forgotten about too! People love the Freelander 2, just not the associated costs that come along with them. This is where the unreliability tag comes from when people talk about FL2's. That's obviously not the Freelander's fault, it's the fault of previous owners that don't take care of them. 😃 Freelander ownership very much depends on whether you can do at least odd-jobs here and there on them yourself to save a few pennies like we do. Or even if you're happy to do everything maintenance wise yourself or know of someone that can, you can save heaps of money. The other option is to join up to various groups on Facebook like the Muddy Freelander group of the Freelander 2 Off Road Group (FL2ORG) and keep your eyes peeled for anyone that might be selling their Freelander 2 that has had alot of the work already done on it. That way you just have to keep on top of the maintenance rather than playing catch up on it like we had to with ours. 😁 If you haven't already done so, take a look at this video that we did to get an idea of what needs to be serviced and when in order to keep them happy ua-cam.com/video/6nrNF4FUEQI/v-deo.html . Once you're on top of the maintenance, these Freelander 2's are amazing cars to drive! Great seating position that's nice and high up. Super comfy on long drives. You don't really have to worry too much about what the weather's doing thanks to it's terrain response system. The insides are universal with the amount of room they have so for us the cost of running it is well worth the amount of car you get! I'm not sure if I've answered your questions or not, if not, feel free to reply back 😁. - Scott
Some incorrect info here. Once the car is running it is running off the alternator, not the battery. The battery is only used when starting.
Hi Kickin Addiction 👋. I've just had a look at your channel and one of your arms is probably bigger than my head! 💪😃 My counter argument would be the following... If the aux/serpentine belt which powers the alternator snapped and come off while a petrol car was driving, the car would continue to drive. That would show me that the car is driven off of the battery and not the alternator. If a car was powered by the alternator, wouldn't the engine instantly stop once the belt comes off? I know when I've had an aux belt snap on a car, the first thing that would be noticed is that the power steering no longer works due to the pump not being driven. Then a decent while later, depending on how much current is being drawn from the battery, will the engine start performing odd due to the battery being depleted and running out of juice. In the instance in this video the car is running off of the alternator. The difference being that the battery is dead so the car starts off of the NOCO's power, then continues to run with whatever power is coming from the alternator. From what I know, the car runs off the battery and the alternator is there to cut in and out to charge the battery. Quite often the alternator on modern day cars will be deactivated to lower the amount of drag in the aux belts circuit. When the battery reaches a defined level, the alternator will cut back in to charge the battery back up again before deactivating once again. 😃 - Scott
I fitted them on my 2016 Pajero 3.2 did LWB two years ago, great tyre for winter and rainy weather. I recommend

@@ScottandAlana4x4 love the channel, keep going, its a grind sometimes but your getting there, soon as you reach 10,000 subs it all changes
Worthless, the first time I needed it wasn't strong enough.... So you have to know in advance when you have car trouble haha, then you can charge it enough!!
Was it the same of NOCO that we had in this video? I know there are lower powered ones that would struggle to start some cars 😀. - Scott
Looking at the invoice, looks like just timing belt replaced, no tensioner and not enough anti-freeze used to suggest water pump done. Bit of false economy there considering the labour cost. Also, check the engine mounting bolts where they bolt into the engine block driver side, they should be replaced once removed as they have been known to shear off if not torqued correctly. Ref 12v permanent live "cig lighters", I believe battery management would switch these off if battery voltage drops too low. 👍🏻
It really would baffle me if they have changed the timing belt and not the waterpump as it would've only made the bill a few quid more when coolant and waterpump is included 🤷♂️😂. Next time I'm under the bonnet of the Yeti, I'll take a look at those bolts, so thanks for the tip on that 👌😀. I'll have to leave Alana's ciggy lighter splitter plugged in on a seat so I can see it through the window and lock the car. At least then, I will be able to see the voltage readout and see if the BMS switches it off at a certain voltage or just after a set period of time 😀. - Scott
it was the traction control because it was slipping it kept kicking in once that was off it flew up
A perfect example of traction control turning from friend to foe. 😂 - Scott
Got my 1800kg mondeo estate with a 1500kg trialer full of logs stuck on my mates campsite logging in winter (the worst wet very osft grass).... he dragged me out with the older generation yeti on those worm drive allterian tyres and it didn't spin in the slightest it was rather impressive
That is super impressive from the Yeti! Hopefully ours will be up to that sort of standard soon 😁. - Scott
If they've gone to the effort to change the auxbelt when doing the timing belt then my money would be they have done the water pump aswell!
We think the same, but equally we have to ask ourselves, is it worth the risk in case it hasn't been done 🤷♂️😀. - Scott
@ScottandAlana4x4 ring the garage the invoice is from they will have a way of working alot of garage will only change everything or not do that job
Love the yeti, nearly bought one before getting my Freelander 2. Sadly, a damaged rear diff and torque converter has made me leave my baby. Got a Hyundai Santa Fe 2012 now. Miss my Freelander but it cost me way too much to keep going.
That seems like the sort of thing that causes alot of people to sell their Freelander. It's almost a case of which bill is the straw the breaks the camels back. 😀 Maybe there's still time for a Yeti after the Santa Fe? 😂 - Scott
How long before the Skoda badge on bonnet turns pink? Nice cars. A friend has one.
Hahahaha that made the both of us laugh 😂. I'm sure if Alana could find a pink Skoda badge, she would 😁. - Scott
Looks brilliant sounds like you had a great day
It was a fantastic weekend, and we look forward to doing it all again in 2025 😁. - Scott
@ScottandAlana4x4 I am hopefully going over to the UK in the summer ☀️ me and my son in our freelander 2
@SparkysKayaks You're not going to be over here in August are you? I only ask because the Muddy Freelander group will be putting on Muddy Weekender 2025. If you're over here at the right time, maybe you could tie that in? 😀 - Scott
@ScottandAlana4x4 I can try to arrange it if you can keep me upto date with dates I can sort out the rest
@@SparkysKayaks If you have Facebook, join up to the Muddy Freelander group as they are a great bunch of people and VERY knowledgeable. Chell and Warren who are admins of the group have a company called MuddyMods which sell modifications for Freelander 1's and 2's and also have a garage to maintain them. They run the Annual Muddy Freelander group meetup and off-road weekend which this short is taken from. You can find all the details, dates and book tickets through this website: www.muddyfreelander.com/ 😃 - Scott
brilliant hoping to buy one from my daughter!
Hi David 👋. They are great cars to drive on the road and an awful lot of fun to use off-road 😁. - Scott
Hi, I have freelander 3.2 i6, 2012. It's not easy to me using of 4x4.
Hi Justin 👋. I've always wanted to drive a 3.2 i6 Freelander 2 as I've heard that they are really nice to drive 😁. The 4x4 system is automatic, so you don't really need to do anything to use it apart from changing the mode if you go off-road. Normally, the mud and ruts mode is the best setting to leave it in if you do go off-road 😀. - Scott
@@ScottandAlana4x4 thanks !
Auto gearbox and ECU rev-limiting while on brake causing this?
It was his first tour around the course and was finding his feet 😀. He got to this quite steep uphill section and just ran out of puff at the top. Getting a manual Freelander 2 started while on a gradient can be tricky. He soon nailed it by giving it a boot load of throttle. 😀 As you see on the next lap, practice makes perfect, and he flew up the hill 👌😁. - Scott
ecu rev limiting lol
Can you do a snow foam cleaning/washing, detailing video after a green laning day?
Maybe this video will tickle your fancy 😁. ua-cam.com/video/-l3Kx_2Y-hc/v-deo.html - Scott
Noticed my rev counter ain't matching the actual engine revs. Engine sounds fine by the way. Any ideas?
That's a properly bizarre issue Matthew. As a total stab in the dark, I'd probably be looking down the route of an electrical issue or dash issue but that is based on no knowledge whatsoever. That's going to be best asked on the Freel2.com forum as one of the knowledgeable people over there might have a better idea 😃. - Scott
@@ScottandAlana4x4 just joined the page.
@18:56 have de same car but I am struggling to get the service kit here in South Africa. Its a struggle. Like my Freelander has a leak on Power sterring pump, i cnt find the part. So I am stuck
Hi Sabata 👋. It sounds like a tough situation to be in. The only thing that I can suggest is to sign up to the Freel2.com forum and ask if anyone else knows where you can get the parts that you need. I've seen that sometimes people from different parts of the world post on there and someone from the same country is able to help them out. 😃 - Scott
Look a good day out well douy guys
Nice vid guys! I really struggled with the AP200. It was a nightmare to pair up. Maybe I bought a fake. I have just bought an iCarSoft. Not cheap but impressed so far. Dropping a video tmrw evening. Can you add a link to the cheap ebay odb2 dongle, I may get one to display gauges.
Thanks Scott 👍. I do find that Bluetooth in general is an interesting technology. If a device is too old, it might not work, and by the same card, if a device is too new, it might not work 😄. When it does work, it is a great technology 😂. I prefer not to link to the cheap OBD2 dongles as there is a 50/50 chance that you might get a foreign rip-off that doesn't work with apps 😄. At least there is less money to lose if you did get a dodgy one. But type into eBay "Bluetooth OBD2" and have a look for one that looks similar to ours, and hopefully, you won't go too far wrong 🤞😀. - Scott
Thanks Scott very useful and explained very well as always great piece of kit and with Christmas coming I may get one in my stocking
Hopefully you've been a good person this year Ivan and you do find one in your Christmas stocking 😁. - Scott

235 or 245 is the tyre width. the tyre profile is a percentage and relates to side wall height e.g 235/60 19 means the side wall height is 60% of 235mm
Thanks for explaining that Ashley 👍. I've often come across conflicting information on the internet on how to read tyre sizes 😁. - Scott
What do you use to record your phone please?
Hi Matty 👋. I just use the inbuilt screen record feature built into Android phones 😀. - Scott
@ aahh I see. thanks. I’m cursed with iPhone. Haha
Hello love the videos have you got a link or anything where you got yours from.
We got ours from here, and our dongle seems to be genuine 😀. www.autelstore.co.uk/ - Scott
enjoying these videos 👍
Yay, we must be doing something right 😁👍. - Scott
It’s not standard otherwise I think it’s not too far off height wise tbf
Hi Bradderz 👋. In standard form the the Freelander 2 is about 1740 mm in height Vs the Yeti at 1645 mm. That's certainly no bad thing the Yeti being smaller as it should mean it has a lower centre of gravity which is better for both on-road use and off-road 😁. Sitting inside the Yeti, you would've thought that it is miles taller than the Freelander as there is LOADS of space inside. I'm 6ft tall and my head is almost touching the roof inside the Freelander. When I get in the Yeti, I feel like I could have Alana on my shoulders and there would still be spare space 😅. - Scott
Great choice, i've had mine for 5 years now without a single problem and its call Betty😂
Hahaha I love that name! 🤣 Good ol' Betty the Yeti 😅. Hopefully we can be as problem free with our Yeti as alot of other people seem to be 🤞😁. - Scott
Hi How Can I Tell If My Freelander 2 SD4 XS Is Chain Driven Or Belt? Thank You In Advance
Hi Scott an alarna have you done a video on the lift on your freelander? Love the content.
Thanks for the support Paul 👍😁. We didn't do a video of the lift kit being installed on our car as we left the car with MuddyMods for a week or so with a long list of work, including fitting all new suspension onto the car. 😃 I know it's not much use, but these are all lessons we have learnt and we will hopefully do a better job documenting the Yeti's progression 🤞😁. - Scott
You dont realise the size difference until they're side by side. Great video.
When we looked on Parkers before buying the car, it didn't seem like there was a huge amount in it. We were shocked at what that actually equated to in real life when we got them next to each other! 😲 We will be very interested once we have got some off-road parts onto the Yeti if it will continue to look quite so small compared to the Freelander 2 😁. We would've loved to have known someone with one of those massive Range Rover Velars to include into the mix! That would've made the FL2 look tiny and the Yeti look like a micro car 😅. - Scott
Where did you get the replacement badges is the different colour?
Hi James 👋. I just sent Alana a text because I had no idea. 🤣 They are from DMB Graphics and you can see the options available here: www.dmb.uk.com/prod/land-rover-gel-badges - Scott
@ScottandAlana4x4 Thank you
Best place to get parts from?
The place I've used and trust the most has to be www.lrparts.net . On most parts it gives you the option for genuine LR part or an OEM equivalent. They deliver pretty quick and when I've had to contact them when I've not been sure about a part, they have always pointed me to the correct bit. The only downside being that they have a flat rate shipping cost no matter how much or how little you buy. I generally store a list of items up and then buy them all at once once I've got enough for an order 😁. - Scott
We looked at a yeti and brought a fl2 😂
I might go back on the following statement when we can get some off-roading bits onto the Yeti and put it to the test, but I do think the Freelander 2 is the better, more universal 4x4 out of the 2. Especially if there is any towing involved 😁. We hadn't even thought about the Yeti when we were thinking what would go well with the FL2. I think it was Alana seeing something somewhere which then put us down the road of exploring the Yeti 😁.
Good choice. Also have both.Freelander 2 120,000 - excellent .Yeti a very impressive vehicle.
Thanks Andrew 👍. We are looking forward to 2025 when we can experience just how impressive the Yeti will be 😁. - Scott
We have had one for year's wife won't let me take it of road 😢
Hi Steve 👋. I reckon that's grounds for uninstalling wife 1.0 and paying the upgrade fee for wife 2.0 🤣. Obviously I'm joking (please tell her not to kill me if you bump into us at any point 😁). If she would entertain coming along with you to an off-roading meetup then that could be a great way to introduce her to the world of Freelander off-roading and show her that it's not too bad. There's normally cars you can passenger ride with so you can see what it's like before using yours. Or you can get someone to be in the passenger seat of your car to help guide you round to build up confidence. The 2 main events to note are the Freelander 2 Off Road Group (FL2ORG) on Facebook have their annual meetup in late April. 2025 hasn't been confirmed yet, but I would've thought it would happen. The other being through the Muddy Freelander group on Facebook, they have their annual event called "Muddy Weekender" in August. Both are a fantastic way of "dipping your toe in" and only doing as much as both you and your wife are comfortable with. Once she sees the fun side, there might not be any going back and you'll be doing 6 nights overlanding next... 😁 - Scott
Great video guys. Just picked myself up a FL2, 06 plate 140k. No history though. 🫣
Thanks Matthew and congrats on the new purchase 👍. Having history isn't the end of the world because even if it did, the almost best case scenario is that it's had regular oil and filter changes. Unless you've brought one from an "enthusiast", it's very unlikely the previous owner would've gone above and beyond with the servicing lets say 😃. The best way to find out how it's been looked after is to do a Haldex oil and filter change or get a trusted mechanic that knows what they are doing to do it but ask for pictures of the old oil and filter. If someone has looked after it, the screen on the pump won't have too much junk on it. If they haven't, the screen will be covered in discarded friction plate material. You may have already seen it, but check out our "What to service" video to give you an idea of what to get on top of to keep your newly acquired Freelander 2 happy 😁. ua-cam.com/video/6nrNF4FUEQI/v-deo.html Other than above, enjoy getting to know your new FL2! 😃 - Scott
@@ScottandAlana4x4 is there a service kit available for the Haldex?
@@matthewjackson3034 Haldex Repairs is an amazing site for anything Haldex related. I'm going to assume you have the Gen 3 Haldex on your 2006 Freelander 2 as from 2010 onwards, the Freelander 2 got the Gen 4 Haldex. So you'll want the Gen 3 service kit which you can find here: www.haldexrepairs.co.uk/shop/service-kit/volvo-ford-land-rover-range-rover-gen-2-3-oil-filter-service-kit/
@ScottandAlana4x4 mines a 2006/2007 model. First of the 2's I believe, I may be wrong. Registered Dec 06.

Been having a problem with my FL 2 2010, the turbo just doesn’t kick in, checked for airflow leaks and found nothing, changed the diesel filter (by watching your video) now going to try and replace the actuator, by watching your video, you may have saved me hundreds of pounds and days waiting to get it into a garage, thank you for these incredible videos you are helping the community in big ways! 💪🏼
Hi Charlie 👋. Firstly, great year of Freelander 2 as all the best people have a 2010 Freelander 2 😉😁. Hopefully your issue lies with the actuator and you can enjoy all the boostings that the turbo will bring you once again 🤞😃. We really appreciate the support and it makes us really happy when one of our rambly videos goes some way into helping someone else out 👌. - Scott
Is 11v better than the newer 4.4v for starting glow plugs? Surprisingly not direct - injection did like japs were in shogun in 2003, 4+ years before 2007 launch!
Filter temp. 27°C
I don't know why, but I expected the fuel to be at a warmer temperature than that before it got sent back to the tank. I learn something new every day. Thanks Michael 👍😀. - Scott
You’re a bit late I bought my 5 years ago. 😂
I'll just nip back 5 years in my time machine and point you towards this video to save you any hassles 😉😂. - Scott
The mk2 freeloader had definitely rarnt its credibility 😢😢 sticker
Thanks guys! As a FL2 owner who likes doing as much work on it as possible before going to a garage, this is really invaluable information. Please keep them coming!
You're welcome Josh 👍😀. This video was prompted by someone who stripped their engine down to change their glow plugs. They thought it was odd that the old ones needed an 8mm socket and the new ones needed a 10mm socket. They didn't think much about it, carried on, and is now faced with re-doing the whole job to install the correct plugs, which would be ever so slightly annoying I can imagine. So if this stops 1 or 2 other people having the same issue, I'd call this video a roaring success 😀. - Scott
Super useful.
Hopefully it helps 1 or 2 people 🤞😁. - Scott
😂 what you are basically telling me about the brakes exactly what happened to me 😂 bought the pads before 2012 , rookie mistake . Stripped it all down. Oh these pads look wrong .
Maybe you can find a time travelling machine, go back in time and watch this video, and avoid the whole situation 😄. It would be even more confusing if you bought the correct set but unknowingly had the wrong set in the box and were scratching your head trying to work out why they won't fit 😂. - Scott
I’d love too, however I know now chassis numbers to Ch999999 take the smaller pads up to 2012 I believe and chassis numbers DH onwards take the larger pads and no shoes . This also applied to rear brake discs as the later ones don’t have the hole for adjusting the shoes. Valuable knowledge .
