Mast Rake on Flying Scot: Setting & Measuring
There are several challenges with properly measuring and setting the mast rake on a Flying Scot. This video discusses the various techniques of measuring and cross-references the aft rake with the forward rake, identifying where the aft rake shackle should be. The best practice is to raise the main halyard with the 100’ tape already attached in the mast-down position so you know exactly what the orientation of the main halyard shackle is in prior to stepping the mast.

Flying Scot...great boat
Fun day to fix a broken shiv and get back to sailing!
Yes
Is this new video
Yes! Brand new this morning
I need some royalties for that LOL
😂yep! Trademark infringed!!
Nice to meet you guys at the Bourbon Cup! Great info on your channel. Keep up the great work
It was great seeing you guys at the Glow, Yes the shifts were friggin crazy the first day!
Still one of my top 3 favorite short videos of your channel and it sill brings tears to my eyes when I watch it!
Guys....9 tacks up wind!!! If would have tacked on that first header after the start it would have been 3 tacks to the top mark.
Fun class! Appreciate your efforts taking us along, great use of the 360 cameras!
Have a great regatta. Wishing the brothers who sail the best.
@@jamesjilek3946 Thanks Jim!
You wouldn’t catch me in Seattle or Detroit
😜🥳🙃😳🤣
Really enjoyable race and great recovery. One minor suggestion - maybe leave the final result out of the video description - it's a bit of a spoiler 😉
Excellent point! Thanks for the suggestion!
Great start! Good eye to windward where you could tack onto port
Thanks. Still, our finish was horrible. Hope you are well Mark! Come to Kentucky Lake. :)
Wow, that was pretty shit! Starting in the wrong end and not able to come to the line in time or near the committee boat. And then ... "Starboard .. Starboard!" ... (other boat:) "I'm on starboard" .. "oh right.. My bad" ... Well absolute beginners here.. But, having fun..
Do you feel better now? More superior to others who have the courage to share (and not edit out) their learning journey? Note also that any mistakes were owned immediately. Will you be as ready to own your bullying comment?
@@fargarden I feel fantastic. Thanks for asking. 100% factual what I write, it is you who choose to be offended on their behalf. Feeling superior at racing? Hell yes, as I have raced all my life in several classes - some at world elite level. Feeling superior at anything else - nope, don't have the background to do that. There is no insult in labelling someone a beginner, if you are not aware of it - when they very clearly are. Its just racing, snowflake! Have a great day, and try not to get your knickers in a twist.
That right shift at the top of the last windward leg, and your gybe set to take the shift downwind on the last leg gained you 6 places! Good eyes!
@@plnwtn thanks. All weekend we took gybe sets to get away from the fleet. Sometimes they weren’t right, but this one was spot on.
17:33 is pretty fun!
😎
Yeah, confusion set in. Had I not gotten confused we probably would have placed better. More coffee, less beer.😅
Great video very helpful when you do not have a crane handy.
As a future Scot owner these types of videos are super helpful!
Hey Wendy, it's great to hear you'll be getting a Scot! Also, nice to see you at The Glow. Hope to see you again soon.
Love the music - haha
Sorry guys! My bad on that one for sure!
Got to see that whole thing unfold right in front of us. Those 2 boats were glued together for a while.😮
...and glue ain't fast! 😂
See you soon. I’ll be there around 3:00.
After the start, you guys are both sitting on the lee side of the boat, inducing more heel. Is this a low breeze technique to keep less of the boat wet and reduce drag? I was always told flatter is faster? Thanks for the videos.
Thanks for you comment and questions. In a typical wind you will maximize your speed at a 7 degree heal. In light winds, you need an even more dramatic heal to open up the leaches. The winning boats know these techniques, and they are specific to the Scot.
@@SailingWithMyBrother Time to order a Lev-o-gage… Thanks for the info. Love the channel and the videos.
We are not paid by any companies mentioned in this video...unfortunately! :)
Wow! Great video and break down of the event. How quickly things can happen!
This is an EXCELLENT instructional video. Thank you Kevin and Dorothy!!!
Boat was going really nicely - well done gentlemen. I've never sailed an FJ or even seen one race. I am curious, is it the norm to sail with so much heel - especially downwind? You also appeared to keep tension on the windward sheet whilst beating - is that deliberate or does it just happen?
This is an FS - Flying Scot. FJ is a Flying Junior. All good. Optimal heal is around 7 degrees. This maximizes the length of the boat to width, giving it a chance to go faster than flat. Flat is slow and the Flying Scot is a tricky boat to make it go fast. Depending upon the winds, we will have some slight tension on the windward jib sheet. In higher winds, there will be more tension.
@@kendallkunz7952 thank you for that informative reply (sorry to misidentify the class)!
@@brianlambert4685 No worries on FJ vs. FS. Where/what do you sail?
Great technique, beautiful boats!😊
Thanks! Get one, there are many across the price spectrum, and very fun!
Great race! Really high standard of presentation, course overview, start-time, on-board commentary and decision making processes.
Thanks for such a kind comment!😊
Awesome! And those outfits 😂🔥
Thanks 😆. We have fun with them. Follow us and yo'ull see all our different getups.
You guys need to move way forward in light air
Thanks @zelmer34234. We moved back because there were pretty solid rollers coming in from the direction of the wind. When we move forward, the boat stopped.
What’s the boat? Reminiscent of my Buccaneer 18 but definitely not that.
Flying Scot! :)
boring beyond belief

great video
Thanks!
Really well done video!
Thank you very much!
Great job as usual. Been watching your videos for years and it is fun to watch these come together.
Thank you Frank, we appreciate the follow. 🎉
On the downwind legs, the crew should be trimming the spinn, and you handle the main. Also, crew should trim the jib a little downwind. Great videos.Don't see a cunningham on the main?. Don't think boat was flat enough on the first race, going downwind. jack Stewart,FS1342,past Pres
Thanks @jackstewrt. We believe each crew needs to do what works best and fastest for them. We've experimented with our responsibilities and continue to refine them. But thanks for your comments. (Yes, there is a cunninham on the main, and it was hooked up, but we never used it during the NACs. We definitely should have for Race 7, but we still came in first without it.)
