I grew up competing in both running and surfing in Southern California and put a pause on surfing when I decided to run at University of Oregon in the early 90s. I did not go on to have a professional running career and during my time at Oregon I realized just how much I love and missed surfing. I was so excited to get back into it, and to this day I surf as much as I can. Surfing is difficult at the beginning, but I urge you to stick with it because it is so rewarding. Once you get a little better you will have so much fun. A few tips: 1. Learn how to catch the wave before you begin the process of standing up. Maybe try riding a few waves on your belly all the way to the sand. 2. At the very beginning it is ok to use your knees to help you stand up, but you will quickly need to learn to complete the stand-up process in one quick motion. You should practice it at home. Start like you're beginning a push up and then kind of fling yourself to your feet. You need to learn to do that in the water once you are comfortable standing up and riding waves to the end. Being light weight and strong is the best way to be for surfing and I have seen many runners learn surfing easily. 3. Do not give up! It will be worth it.
