Shugendo: A Way of Living
We go on a journey to the top of Mt. Kongo with Kuon Kawaguchi, a Shugendo (修験道) practitioner.
Shugendō is a Japanese spiritual and religious tradition that blends elements of Shinto, Buddhism (particularly Esoteric Buddhism), Taoism, and local folk religions. Practitioners of Shugendō, known as yamabushi ("one who lies down in the mountains"), engage in ascetic practices in the mountains to achieve spiritual power and enlightenment
Mountains are considered sacred spaces where deities and spiritual beings reside. The natural environment is central to Shugendō practices.

Thanks for checking out the video. Although they call it sand (suna) in Japanese, its actually a kind of gravel or small stones. You would need to check out what's available in your area, but I think you could find something suitable. Another important part is the feature rocks in the gardens. They usually represent various animals or other natural elements. There's a pretty good wikipedia article about it (search "karesansui", and it should come up)
