How to Understand Tax Brackets
If you are a single person with an income of $53,600, your tax is $6,757.
The first $11,600 is taxed at 10%. Therefore, $11,600 x 10% = $1,160.
Since $11,600 is taxed, the remaining of this income, $41,600
($53,200 - $11,600) is taxed at 12% and 22%.
12% Bracket portion is $35,550 ($47,150 − $11,600). Therefore, $35,550 x 12% = $4,266.
This leaves the remaining $6,050 (53,200−47,150) left to be taxed at 22%.
Therefore, $6,050 x 22% = $1,331. Total tax = $1,160 + $4,266 + $1,331. Total tax = $6,757
Here is a tax rate table for married couple filing jointly.
Let’s use the same income amount we used in single person scenario. This married couple has income of $53,200.
If you are a married couple, your total tax is $5,920.
The first $23,200 is taxed at 10%. Therefore, $23,200 x 10% = 2,300.
Since $23,200 is taxed, the remaining of this income, $30,000
($53,200 - $23,200) is taxed at 12%.
Therefore, $30,000 x 12% = $3,600. Total tax = $2,320 + $3,600. Total tax = $5,920.
Here is a tax rate table for head of household.
Let’s use the same income amount $53,200.
The first $16,550 is taxed at 10%. Therefore, $16,550 x 10% = 1,655
Since $16,550 is taxed, the remaining of this income, $36.650.
($53,200 - $16,550) is taxed at 12%. Therefore, $36,650 x 12% = $4,398.
Total tax = $1,655 + $4,398. Total tax = $6,053.
Although the taxes are high in all cases, standard deductions or itemized deduction will offset the taxes.
