A Beginners Guide: Picking a Retro Handheld Gaming Device
Переглядів 10 тис.Місяць тому
Picking your first or a new retro gaming device can be hard due to so many options being out there, and every person has a different thing(s) they are wanting from said device. So hopefully this video helped you narrow down your options or at least narrow down what you are wanting out of these devices. Feel free to message me with any question you might have. Time Stamps: 0:00 Introduction. 00:...
Anyhow, as my mid ranger, I plan to get a rg cube to play super smash Bros brawl mods on the go.
Nice, I’ve been playing that on my rg406 😮💨
*rg35xx plus.
if you had to pick a device from each row, what would your 4 device line up look like? mine is: miyoo mini + RG406V Odin 2 Mini PsVita
Anbernic RG35XX SP (don’t own one but it looks cool) Retroid Pocket 4 Pro Steam Deck OLED PS Vita I also own a New 3DS XL and a Switch BTW.
had to re upload this, so lets run it back, sorry for the wait
I ended up getting a Steam Deck.
@@weichiang89 the biggest baddest of em all
too big
Im coonfused on these devices is it easy to download games?
@@compactinfinity very easy, some even come with game already on them if u don’t want to do it yourself. I’d advise getting your own games tho, Sometimes the games they come with start to act up later down the line with saves and progressz
Which one has zelda majoras mask?
Any of the mid-tier option he gave should give you a very good expirience, they most likely wont come with majora but just find the rom online, unzip and drag to the correct folder, its super easy, I won't tell you where to get the rom because its tecnically a crime but nobody cares so it takes like 1 minute.

Nice! Can’t wait!
@@sebastianc1110 its up
@ Nice, I saw it. Great video!
I would put trimui smart pro in the first example, 50$ for 8GB internal storage and 64GB card, mid power, big screen, WiFi and Bluetooth and ability to stream from pc
Yeah that’s a solid device tbh, it wasn’t as cheap as when I started to make this video but I’d def put in there if I could go back. It’s actually quite the powerhouse for its price. I’ve seen em as low as $35 😩
Steam deck. All hands down. Cheaper than anything else. Go bigger or go home
@@gordonfreeman9641 the power house of the handheld gaming world 😎🦾
It's also good to have a basic pocket friendly handheld
I would say Powkiddy x55 and the Anbernic RG Cube and the Trimui Smart Pro are the best so far.
@@ElectricCreature imma big rg cube fan myself
What's the best for me? -Horizontal -Any size screen(Smaller is better, though) -Good with PSP or DS (60fps, native res.) -2 sticks (Or one. two is good for playing FPS games and stuff, but whatever) -GZdoom, I guess? (Depends on if it has two sticks, idk if there's a portable port aside from Delta Touch, and if so, retract it, because Delta Touch is genuinely the worst thing ever)
Ambernic RG40XX H (70USD base price) or PowKiddy RGB20SX (currently 70usd, down from 110)
@@ChrisKaranassios Any good comparisons between the two, specs-wise?
@@Ijustusethistocommentstuff rg40 is kinda game boy advance size and the powktty is game boy color size with a bigger screen
Great video! I’m helping my friend buy their first handheld and your video helped me boil down my 20 questions down to 5 easy to communicate categories. I appreciate you!
@@NeverStopImproving421 hell yeah! Hope yall have a blast!
imo I never understood these devices. I would always rather buy a vita, switch, or steam deck and mod it so I get all the systems I want, plus modern games
@@forjqoijasd yeah they are kinda for a certain audience, everyone has their preferences. Modded consoles are great emulation devices too. Nothing wrong with that!
This was very informative. Especially because I’m a total beginner in understanding the nuances between such devices. I look forward to more of your videos. Thanks for the info.
So basically 300$ Gamecube and PS2 Upscaled and some switch games full speed 200$ Ganecube and PS2 upscaled (1.5 - 2x resolution) but playable 199-100$ PSP ,N64,DC and some Gamecube Below 100$ PS1 and below
yeah pretty much, I would say the $100 avg price point & some below, can do more at this day in age but for the most part you hit it right on.
@@BeaskyBoy Yeah like some can do Some PSP,N64 and DC but not at full speed
Heres my guide: Buy a Vita lol
@@OneCentWonder vita can work for a good amount of systems, can’t do em all but if you have a vita it’d definitely mod it, very easy and fun.
I tried but the modded vita is unplayable, no speed adjustment, no upscaling, supports only like 3 systems properly, android is more versatile compared to the vita os, no mods on the vita, and used vitas go for 200CAD where I am at, compared to 100CAD retail for a PSP/PS1 and everything under system. You should buy a ps vita instead if you specifically want to play ps vita games
@@ChrisKaranassios yeah the vita and psp can work but they aren’t as capable as android systems in terms of overall performance and features
Its cumbersome to set up v
I just bought an analog pocket Translucent Orange
@@Jackbat69 translucent gang 🫡🫡
Just putting this out here For people that say "just use official hardware!" I say they fit different niches. Retro handhelds are generalists, official handhelds are specialists. The 3ds of course specializes in the DS family, but is crap for n64 and beyond. Depending on your retro handheld, you can even play switch! (Can confirm, I have a RP3+ and it can run some switch games) and by extension, just about everything that came before it It's about what you'd like to play at the end of the day
@@Alanis1337 great point, if I could go back and re upload this, I would def add this. I’ll probably use this comment for a future video. Thanks for watching.
W presentation, w first video of your channel, simple concise and informative. good job🗣️
@@timmyhuynh5539 thanks I really appreciate it. Tryna get better with every video.
Retroid pocket 4 pro because you can on a tv and it plays games up to PS2 and GameCube.
@@Fonz128 one of my fav options tbh. Imma big fan of the RP4P it can get the job done for most.
4:12 What is that picture with all the translucent consoles? Where did you find it?

Awesome video! Very crisp, concise, each sentence full of information. I did have to check if the video was running at 2x speed lol, great content nonetheless
Yeah whenever I finished the video I think it removed some of the pauses I had in the audio and me talking, which made it seem very fast in some parts. I’m still learning about editing but I really appreciate you watching and the kind words 🫡🫡🫡
Hahaha...this gets complicated real fast.
@@jakesmith5278 most complicated choice of my life 🤒

@@FunkadelicPeach thanks! I’m pretty new to video editing so this compliment means a lot. I hope to improve as I go 🫡
@@BeaskyBoy heck yeah man! Keep it up! Your channel will blow up in no time. The retro handheld community loves eating up new content hahaha
Odin 2 is what I’m getting love es-de on it and think it’s worth the money
@@FredMorgan-gb5el Odin 2 is GOATED 🫡
I wanted something up to price range of RP2S but after much deliberation between the RG35XXH or the powkiddy rgb30, down to trimui smart pro or even that microm xu thing, just hours ago before discovering this video i opted for rg35xxh with domestic shipping for 70, seems very reasonable. Probably gonna start with knulli and racing lagoon translation. Can't wait
@@justinwhite797 solid option man! Glad you figured it out, and hope you have fun.
If you have a PSP or even better a Vita laying around gathering dust, you pretty much have one of these devices already.
@@Breakbeats92.5 to an extent yeah. That’s a great point but for mid - high power systems, the vita doesn’t work. Ps1, N64 and GBA games work great on my vita.
Shit take
If u have phone
I need help. I'm torn between the rg 35 xxsp and the miyoo mini +
@@TauTau12 what are the biggest things your torn between?
@@BeaskyBoy I just don't know which device to get. On a power level they seem pretty similar, the main criteria for me is pocketability and a good enough controls layout so that I don't feel like my hands are cramped in an unconfortable way. Edit: The consoles I'm looking for are mostly the gba's, snes and if possible some ps1 although that might be a bit of a stretch in terms of those devices performance capabilities
Anbernic RG40XX - H with KNULLI operating system. The screen on the 35 is too small. The KNULLI os makes the device pop.
@@TauTau12 I’d say the SP cause they do very similar stuff, but it has more battery and RAM.
@@Breakbeats92.5 I'm looking more for a vertical type of handheld. I prefer the aesthetics and I feel like the pocketability is way better which is mainly what I'm interested
The three power tiersare more like 5 because there's for example a low-medium tier which is basically SNES, PS1 and Sega 32X/CD. Something like the Powkiddy V90 will struggle with these but the AnbernicRG351 will play all of these fine despite being unable to play N64
@@carrot708 yeah you def could add more, I tried to condense into 3 for ease for ppl new to certain stuff.
Just get the Miyoo mini or miyoo plus. Unless a joystick is really important to you then get an anbernic 35xx h or rg353m. Just my opinion.
Yeah those are solid choices, good price and very pocketable. Some ppl need the joysticks so the RG would also work.
🙁Wanted the Analogue Pocket, 215 USD.. Just too expensive.. plus the dock which is another 100 bucks.. lol.. soon,, will have to save more..
@@kalulugamer it’s a good device tho, worth the wait. Hope you enjoy it when you get it
