A short video for the Facebook "Small Traditional Sailing Boats" November is SCAMP month initiative. Howard Rice and John Welsford discuss the now classic small boat named SCAMP and the 2024 SCAMP Camp and SCALLYWAG Camp group build plans.

After a night in Bahia Zig Zag anchored precisely where Joshua Slocum was purported to have anchored (as told to me by a Chilean maritime historian). There was only one spot to anchor and so I must have been in the same spot, a special moment in such a remote place. For the first time in my life I opened Sailing Alone Around the World by Slocum and with morning coffee I began reading. What a pl...

Departure day from north of Punta Arenas. In this video details of my boat can be seen including the sea anchor set up (gray bag sport side deck). This was the best day I had after waiting for several weeks and it is a typical day weather wise on the Strait of Magellan. The further south I sailed the windier and more unpredictable it became.

The boat builders hut I lived in for a week while working on my boat. Strait of Magellan, north of Punta Arenas.

We head south to rescue my boat aboard the aged but tough El Decano
Not only is that a great looking boat but that sail layout is extremely impressive and looks well balanced, is the total area less or similar to the original, are those detailed sail plan amendments and construction available for us to replicate the Magellan variant.
Thank you guys for the great video. Thinking about building one so all the information is precious. Amazing feat on the strait of magellan!
mmm please your comming to Tasmainia, I dont think I could aford the time or cost yet very keen to see more scamps in australia because one day i might buy a second hand one or join a camp.
wait, you started reading Slocum AFTER you began your journey? while in the Straits of Magellan?! wild! Surprised you chose the Straits and didnt just cruise the Beagle Channel for fun. lol Imagine setting off for a solo circumnavigation, and not having read any books of sailors who challenged the same waters in the past. Then again, UA-cam is full of those goofy sailing channels that probably think the 5 great capes are a fashion trend. "Does the Cape Horn come with sprinkles?" "Ya, I want sprinkles on my Cape Horn too!"
I did sail the Beagle Channel on this voyage and on a previous 91 day solo I made in a sailing canoe plus twice around Cape Horn
@@howardrice7280 Thats incredible. do you have a blog / Instagram with more highlights of these voyages? The sound super interesting.
Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego , On a Very rare Good Whether Day !
Super interesting marine scenery going by...a trip of a lifetime!😅
just one walk around this boat & you can see the time & effort put into this craft...unbelievable quality evident. I once had the patience for this kind of work & loved it...recent times have made me focus on basic economic necessities 😮
Careening the boat on a beach for repairs in Central America is a classic Joshua Slocum move. envious.
More please and fix mic.
What a beautiful little boat
I'm waiting for the plans to be published. I bought the Pathfinder plans because I wanted a bigger boat than the Scamp, but it's not the right boat for me. The Scallywag will be perfect, and not just because it will be easier to build in my garage than the Pathfinder. I also have Ian Oughtreds Caledonia and Fulmer plans, but they weren't right for me either. I need a boat for Canadian prairie and mountain lakes that are shallow, rocky, and very windy, with few beaches and no ramps or docks, and zero services. Something with shelter when it starts to hail in summer. A boat that can be beached on gravel with little damage. Something stable, tough, versatile, relatively spacious, with shelter... and fairly "quick" to build. And I also want to enjoy the build. I'm looking forward to the Scallywag!
I couldn't help but laugh at this because you are spot on. I bought the Pathfinder plans and after lofting the midsection station and transom onto bare plywood sheets I thought...perhaps a Navigator was plenty big, because this thing is a wooden homebuilt tall ship...lol and was going to eat my entire 20x24 garage while building.
As a SCAMP camper from 2015, everything Howard and John say here is true and then some! I knew zip before starting my boat, and did get all of the skills to build and complete the boat. And yeah, at the end of my build I wish I had the skills at the beginning!! Also, definitely I keep in touch with my fellow SCAMPers and John and Howard. My boat is a delight. I sail her all the time. Such a great design. And John and Howard were so helpful after the camp when I had questions. They were immediately responsive. SCAMP camp was a life changing experience. Do it if you can. Life is short.
Hi Howard Do you have an additional place or another account to view your content ? I see this account isn't used very much and im interested in learning more about the Scamp and upcoming Scallywag. ATB Mike #StayCornish😬
Nice.
Awesome .... love the Scamp ... please post more Scamp adventures
Good grief you can see the pressure from the wind blowing the water out from the beach! Just watching that is a scary reminder of how strong the wind is.
What a great adventure in a Scamp! More please
Fantastic
Really exciting. Do you sleep under the cover?
What fantastic voyage. More please.
In a Scamp!

Post more Howard!!! 🙂
Wow brilliant Howard, Greetings from the UK. This video gives a real sense of the vastness of the area, and the smallness of your Scamp. It makes us mere mortals seem very humble in comparison with our day voyages in our boats close to land and civilization. Thank you for letting us join your amazing journey.
is it a scamp or a tread lightly?
I have to ask, is that the same HMS Beagle that Darwin sailed on for Origin of the Species?
