Mostly piano music, jazz to classical and back again, by Paul G. McCurdy
Fourth Wedding Anniversary
A musical love improvisation for my husboo Mario and me today on our fourth wedding anniversary. We’ve had so many adventures and helped each other out so much and continue to grow. It’s not always easy, even though it may look like it. May we continue to grow and explore!

Hiding? Finding solace? Playing through the middle movements of Mozart piano sonatas
Переглядів 67Місяць тому
I've already played lots of fast and angry music today (because the United States elected a would-be dictator and world-conqueror, racist, sexist, rapist, etc.), but one of my self-therapies is to play either Haydn or Mozart sonatas. Here are the middle movements of the Mozart sonatas in the second volume of the Henle edition: K. 330, not K. 331 (skipping the menuetto), K. 332, K. 333, K. 457, ...
New Composition: Classy Mr. A.
Переглядів 53Місяць тому
I asked my friend Mr. A. what he wanted for his birthday, and he said "maybe a little piano music." His birthday was in two days, so this was a rapidly composed song to hopefully bring a little delight. Here's a link to the sheet music: musescore.com/user/27504400/scores/21206245?share=copy_link
Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 in g minor, Op. 23
Переглядів 1,7 тис.2 місяці тому
I’m still working on this beast. I don’t get to practice much (less than once a week), but this piece keeps calling me and I check in with it as much as possible and try to make small gains. This video is largely to diagnose hand movements - efficient choreography, necessary rest and resetting - and caught my left hand looking a little crazy, hopefully largely an effect of the angle. But I trus...
New composition: Loss of a Friend
Переглядів 2,2 тис.3 місяці тому
A song born from an overwhelming sense of betrayal by a friend. The betrayal overlapped with feelings of self-pity and anger at how difficult it has been to be a musician lately. The situation has improved, but I have a feeling I'll keep playing this to get some sadness out. There's a part of me that feels I get punished whenever I show emotions in my day-to-day struggles. And there's also a lo...
Five Piano Improvisations
Переглядів 1613 місяці тому
I'm playing around with deliberate composing, and the five or so things I've created have all been different styles. I admire composers who have "found their style" and have distinct, individualistic voices, even as they're fitting within a realm of classical (Britten) or French pop (Legrand) or Irish folk (my new obsession, Tír na nÓg), just to name a few. I've been doing these improvisations ...

Nothing too special here just my first new computer in over a dozen years, so I wanted to check the ease of recording and uploading. And it's easy!
Innendale (a new song in an old style)

New composition! This is a casual home audio recording paired with a lead sheet. I’m moving on to other things so I’m not sure when I’ll get around to performing and recording this again. So here’s this early rough cut!

Forgotten Love Letters (Piano Improvisation)
little tip for u my friend at 2:37 u dont need to jump from D to G with 5 (u made a mistake on G cuz of this), u can just use finger 1 - 3 - 5 !
Hey great job on the piece! I recommend listening to Annique Göttler’s interpretation of this piece. Her articulation and emotion is so well captured in her playing. Here’s the link to her video and channel if you want to check it out! ua-cam.com/video/QIGTGvR9J_E/v-deo.htmlsi=wDmNSe2gsrwuxOQQ
I'm listening to Three Rain Pieces.......in the rain. 😀 Perfection! Thanks for sharing.
@@Morcoded77 We’ve had dangerous rain, but I think everyone’s been ok. I’ve loved it and hope to keep enjoying some rain this weekend!
@@diezauberwelt Oh gosh, we were watching some of the footage of the damage. I'm glad you and Mario are safe ❤
Sooo very sad!!
Enjoying some Mozart ! Nice work!! Thanks for making my day!!
Great playing, I love this a lot!!!❤ I loved how dramatic, pulses, and the counts you play! P.S. I love your mistakes, why didn’t Chopin compose it like how you played?
Thank you! That’s so sweet!
still some mistake but really good, could play the coda faster a bit
@@thanhchi6268 Thank you for listening! I keep practicing and will post a new and improved video one day!
Awesome work man
Thanks for listening!
Great performance! As someone at the beginning-Intermediate level I aspire to play as smoothly and well as you one day.
Thank you for the encouragement!!! And I’m glad you’re making music, too! It makes the world better. It’s so fun to see people getting excited by this Chopin piece.
Good job
Thank you!
Good, but I do think the intro was too fast and the coda is great but definitely needs some more speed and refining touches.
Eeeeek more speed? I’ll try! 🤪 Seriously, thank you for listening to me. There’s a lot of ballade recordings out there.
@@diezauberwelt You should keep practicing the coda at a slow tempo and slowly increase as you practice, aside from that, your scales were really impressive!
I think tempo is a subjective thing, listen to how mark hambourg plays this ballade
@@lightx222Practicing slowly with the metronome and gradually increasing speed is my main way of practice - I just need to do it more often! 😂
@@oldschoolscoresI’ll take a listen to Hambourg. I recently watched/listened to Gary Graffman play it, and he played several parts slower than many people.
Deserve million
Aw thank you!
It's beautiful, Paul.
Thank you for listening, David!
Nice
beautiful
Thank you for listening! I really appreciate that. 🤗
that was nice, just got a subscriber
That means a lot! Thank you for your support. 🤗
Love this. Thanks!!
Love it!!! Thanks for sharing
Very nice !! Thanks!!
Keep practicing till you get the coda a little faster. :)))
Will do! It’s already better than in this recording but still not good enough. I love trying to make it sound mischievous and sassy.
Excellent Composition...full of sophisticated sonorities and at the same time in connection with the Great Romantic Tradition....bravissimo, a very good result! Thanks.
Thank you so much for listening and for taking the time to comment. I hope to compose many more pieces!
@@diezauberwelti Hope you Will find the way to do It.... You' ve revealed a nice and interesting style in composing for the Piano.... I Will also try to play this beautiful Nocturne, thanks for giving us the link to sheet music....
Needs a little bit of work here and there and a lil bit of speed on some parts (the coda for example) but loved the emotion and the phrasing you gave it, defo better to have a focus on the musicality than on speed and with a little bit more work this can and will be an amazing interpretation, keep it going!! Bravo :)
It means so much to me to have a thoughtful listener! Thank you! I hope I can polish up everything and make the coda even more demonically joyful. Stay tuned for improvements!
Not bad, you make this piece look easy. I'm wondering, do you usually play harder pieces while reading them or do you play it by heart after a while? To me, reading while playing feels like a disadvantage, but that may be because I'm bad at reading
Thank you for listening and for the fun questions! I’m very very very bad at memorizing and seldom play something this long or difficult. But I love the freedom of not having to look at music (which is why I do so much improv and jazz nowadays). It’s my goal to soak this piece in so much that I can play it from memory. I’ve done little tests where I play without my glasses so everything is blurry but I still can use the music to keep seeing the larger picture.
you play this piece better than many who know the sheet music by memory and I think you captured the big picture of it good job!
Thank you so much for these very encouraging words! I’ve really fallen in love with this piece and hope to keep improving.
Quite difficult to play!!!
Quite nice!!!!
So southing, and calming... Well done Paul..
Sounds great!! Well done!!
Terrific!!! Makes me grin!! Love it!!
this is brilliant, the tone sounds so great in the room
A beautiful, peaceful listen after a busy weekend! Thank you!
I'm enjoying the feeling of little fragments of things floating through.
This is fun to listen to.
I don't recognize any of these. I appreciate that you shared this with us Paul.
Thanks for listening, Doonie!
This is so lovely! A perfect way to begin the day!
Beautiful!
Nice playing 👍
Thanks so much for listening! 🥰
I like it!!!
Sweet and jolly, reminding me of Fred Rogers (because my jazz references are limited)
It’s funny… I’ve improvised random jazz like this on piano but it sounds (to my ears) trite, random, etc. But I must agree that there was a lot of joy and jollity when I was goofing off with this keyboard!
Holy moly! Adore this!
I think this was my first up-tempo improv. Thanks for listening!
Very interesting!!
Outstanding Paul!!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
Very fun!!
Amazing!
Been having a PG piano marathon!! Enjoying !!
I like it!
Be afraid, be very afraid!!!
Hahahaha that’s right!
