How much essential oil did that amount of material yield?? I’m trying to figure out if a smaller 250-500mL set up works or if I should just buy a still where u can put 50L+ and maybe make spirits 🤔
What are your goals for using it?
I have various herbs at home. Fragrant flowers. Lemongrass. Lavender - I do use a diffuser for aroma therapy… my wife makes her own body butter so essential oils would be good. But I also wouldn’t mind making a gallon of whiskey. I’m wondering if bigger is better or if small-medium will do for my needs.
i just eat it seriously
Hey, could you give a link to get the steam tables, i am conducting my plant design in cumene production and its difficult for me to get a data properties at different temp & pressure especially C9-C12
che.k-state.edu/docs/imported/SteamTable.pdf
Cool
How many years will this apparatus last? I would like to make use of this design
Depends on how well you handle it. It's hard to not accidentally chip it when you're cleaning it.
is it better to use a extra bottle before the water boiler for the lavender? i saw this the first time
This is the best explanation ever, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you sir
thank you 😇
Hello!! Thank you for this beautiful and precise demonstration. It would be really helpful if you could help me with a doubt. Actually, I have been trying to extract pure essential oil from Neem Leaves (crushed to powder) using a steam distillation apparatus and for my solvent I have been using ethanol and methanol in a 50:50 ratio Am I on the right path? If you could guide with any of your suggestions and knowledge, it would be really helpful for me.
We have been avoiding solvents as much as possible. So while I know its possible, the exact ratios are something I do not know.
So pure😂😊
What's the name of those 2 balls. @@kgharding29
Don't blow yourself folk. You could still use this remains for a good tea if not mixed!
They rarely have what I'm searching in stores... wish I could afford this but maybe it is possible. How much costs the whole kit there?
Is that possible to use Soxhlet?
Yes. One of our other rigs used this
@@kgharding29 ok cool. but I mean in small size, just to do laboratory experience with students in school. Lemme know please
Yes. We do have and use Soxhlet apparatus in the School for lab demonstrations.
@@kgharding29 wow amazing! please could you share the procedure? i wanna do it with my class! lemme know!
@@kgharding29 ok that's amazing! but could you share with me how to do it?
How to proceed for hollow
With conduction? If this is hollow, and there is air movement, this would be a convection only problem.
@@kgharding29 if different temperatures at both ends are maintained then conduction will be there, how to proceed with that
Exactly the same way, using a conductive heat transfer coefficient for stationary air. pubs.aip.org/aip/jpr/article-abstract/14/4/947/241383/Viscosity-and-Thermal-Conductivity-of-Dry-Air-in
Why dont u mix the lavender with water instead of putting lavender and water alone in a balloon ?
In some experiments we do. One of our reasons to avoid mixing is to be able to separate the biomass from the hot water more easily at the end of the experiment, and start a new run with water that is already somewhat heated.
@@kgharding29 is there any difference in the end result between the methods? Or do they both result in the same thing?
Great work. Our fourth year students can benefit from this greatly. It will surely serve the postgrads too.
Thanks Michael!

Please could you email me, and we can discuss further. Kevin.Harding@wits.ac.za

Hello. I am surprised that From Delhi you are curious about organic sanitary pads. In Tamilnadu many women are doing organic sanitary pads with cotton and herbals. Thank you
Consider using a Clevenger apparatus or a Dean Stark trap in place of the separatory funnel . Also you can prevent over pressure by using a couple of cotton balls on top of the still head instead of a thermometer. The thermometer is not needed in this setup
Thanks for the input. Worthwhile considerations indeed. FYI: the thermometer was to record the speed of the temperature increase
@@kgharding29 I use a hand held laser thermometer made by Klein Tools. It allows me to check temp at any point in the system. It's quite accurate. It registers in both F and C.
Gge😂❤🎉❤❤😂😂🎉gghe😊
What size tubing did you use? Also may I know the general dimensions of the print? I think my 3D printer resized it incorrectly and I am afraid I will buy the wrong tubing
Roughly 58mm x 58mm x 15mm. Tubing measures about 4.7mm outer diameter
Closed system ? Come on my guy stop abusing that poor sep funnel 😂
You noticed a glassblower sealed the opening for some other purpose before we got hold of the glassware 😀
@@kgharding29 ahhh yess
How to get this?
We currently only have prototypes (around 10 at last count, maybe less). How many would you be interested in? Where are you based?
Cool idea! I would love to see it working, though ;-)
You and me both! I have access to about 8 different store bought peristaltic pumps, so figuring out the 3D print version would not be worth my while.
If for the screw, you print the cylinder walls on the exterior of the screw as a single print (except for 5-10mm at the bottom and top respectfully for input/output) then you wont need to engineer clearance. You'll have a straw you can rotate.
Good point. I liked this print for the very reason that I could open it up to show what was happening. Maybe that is the next version.
Great share.
Thanks
doesnt the system need some sort of exhaust for overpressure?
It does! Thankfully a leaky connection in this setup did the job. We won't be using this exact rig again.
wow, that explanation of Mass balance was crystal clear, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
clean coal is a lie. there is no such thing as clean coal.
It may not have come across here, it should have in the longer version of this video (ua-cam.com/video/GfFLm9IbruU/v-deo.html), but I try and rather use the word "cleaner" in a classroom setting. However, there is debate if this is even true.
Hi, for the problem at 34:20, I'm getting 1461Km. Isn't that a bit too long?
That sounds very long - too long. Have you possibly made a unit conversion error? Anybody get any other answer?
@@kgharding29 ca. 2km
Why used 25°C as the starting temperature for both NAOH and H2O. How did you come with that 25°C prof?
The value of the heat of mixing in this example was given at 25degC (possibly not made clear enough in the video), and as such the basis of each of NaOH and H2O was taken from the same point. The way the question is solved, you should note that if you had taken a different starting temperature (basis) for the individual chemicals, then heated to 25degC, the maths cancels out in such a way that this would not have made a difference to the final answer.
Well explained energy balance equation. Great work Kevin!!
Glad you liked it!
Good presentation Proff...appreciate that..Can you post similar presentation on renewable but covering green hydrogen technology , Principles, application, technology updates etc..
Hopefully in the first half of the new year. But not promising a specific date.
Thanks. Simplified video for pump selection and hydraulics.
Glad it was helpful!
Great and useful 👍🏻
Glad to hear that!
I suggest you improve the microphone. there are many way on how on UA-cam. also I am not sure if "material balance system" is something I really need to do as process engineer? Thanks for the video. :)
Thanks for the comment. The fact that you feel this little channel needs to invest in a better microphone means its reaching further than originally intended! Do you need material balances? - Material balances (MB) lead to energy balances, energy and electricity calculations, and power requirements. - They form the basis for reactor calculations and reactor engineering. - MB are also the basis for many other calculations, including costing and sizing of equipment and overall plant requirements, utilities and other needs. - Without material balances it is impossible to perform many environmental assessments - and probably many more that I have forgotten at this moment. So yes - I do think you need to know this.
I need guidance brother, I'm going to start my job as a trainee process engineer in pharmaceutical industry API plant. What should i learn before joining

What is it degrading into? Is it not just “dissolving” the material into microscopic pieces and not back into its original compounds ? It’s a very interesting topic though Prof
The pads are basically corn starch, bamboo and paper materials. Nothing synthetic. Maybe next year's project can test the degradation claims?
The important question remains unanswered: how to decide which is the better configuration for a given system curve? It would be great to extend this discussion and show different system curves and how they behave with pumps in parallel vs series and show that some system curves favor series and some favor parallel.
I leave that to others to discuss here. Or for the classroom and those in my lectures. :)
