It's better to use Calcium-Ammonium Nitrate than just Calcium Nitrate because CAN contains small amount (around 5%) of NH4+ form of Nitrogen which you actually want in hydro. You don't want just NO3-. Optimal ratio of NH4+ to NO3- in hydro is in 1:10 - 1:15 range, so around 5%.
