Greetings! I'm an adventurer and nature lover who spent 2 years cycling over 40,000 km around the world. These videos recount the stories of all the incredible places on Earth I've had the privilege of exploring. Follow along as I relive the adventure in a 40 part video series. Season 1: Canada. Season 2: Europe. Season 3: The Silk Road. Season 4: East Asia.
Cycling Canada Ep 9 - Nova Scotia
The province of Nova Scotia is a cycling paradise. With numerous rail trails, including 3 top quality destination rail trails, incredible country roads, peaceful scenic routes, and the world famous Cabot Trail through Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The wonderful cycling both on and off road is matched by the beauty of the landscapes, especially during the fall season, as the trees turn to fiery shades of red, orange, and yellow. And of course there is the beauty of the ocean that almost completely surrounds the province and its 13,000km of coastline. It's a truly wonderful destination to cycle.
In the summer of 2022, I cycled 15,000 km across Canada in 175 days from May 21st to November 11th, Departing Victoria, BC, and arriving Cape Spear, NFLD. This is the story of the ninth province of that journey. The Nova Scotia adventure took place from October 14th to 29th.

A Night of Northern Lights on Panorama Ridge - TIMELAPSE
Переглядів 9832 місяці тому
On the night of October 10-11th, 2024, a large coronal mass ejection reached Earth, sparking incredibly strong auroras. I chased these northern lights on an overnight mission up to Panorama Ridge in Garibaldi Provincial Park. From less than 40 minutes after sunset, to about 40 minutes before sunrise, the lights danced across the sky. Vibrant pinks started the show, shining high above the Black ...

Welcome to the first episode of cycling canada! This series is about my journey in the summer of 2022 bicycling across the 10 provinces of Canada. Great videos and release of them is in perfect timing! Just curious, what bike did you use for your trip?
Congrats, first of all for biking through hilly New Brunswick. Secondly, as a New Brunswicker, I appreciated your authentic (accurate!) portrait of the province. Thirdly, well done on the camera/video/drone footage (particularly impressive given the limitations that bicycle storage must place upon your equipment options). All New Brunswickers should watch this video, and also anyone who visits the province would be well advised to do the same. Your video transcends the biking community.👍👍
As a teacher living on the west coast, I’ve only had the opportunity to visit NS a couple of times and only in the summer. Your wonderful video is going into my retirement plan. Oh to have those quiet routes! Thx!
Nice vid and great tour! Just fyi… musquodoboit is pronounced “musk-uh-dob-it”
Great video, looks like some great rides up there.
Some of the best bike videos I’ve seen. Well done! Wife and are very inspired and plan to ride Boulder, Co to Quebec City 2025! Can’t wait.
Dear Nathan. Thank you for another amazing production for us all to enjoy. Spectacular sights and sounds. You had me teary-eyed at 20:20 as you climbed the Cabot Trail, then again as you pedalled onto the overnight ferry to Newfoundland. Hugs, C.
Thank you so much Cynthia! And thanks again for the incredible recommendation to cycle the Marine Drive route! Definitely a great choice there.
Would you consider doing a video on the equipment you used during your trip? Bike, GPS, cameras, drone, tent etc etc.
Absolutely. It will probably come in a few months though, as my trip is complete and equipment is scattered in different parts of Canada at the moment. Have to gather it all back up to make the video. To answer your question about lights: I have a SON 28 dynamo hub powering a SON Edelux II front light and Busch + Müller Toplight Line Brake Plus rear light. Incredible lighting system.
Another amazing video of your journey! Thank-you👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much for the kind words of support!
This series is all class, pure gold 💛 Thank you Nathan
Thank you for taking us on such an amazing adventure. You did a stellar job narrating with educational material, but also incredible photography!
Another beautiful video. What a wonderful trip. Happy trails.
Great ride and vlog, loved it. Thank you.
U need a rear light
...? I have a rear light. 6:08
@@nathanstarzynski What is your front and rear lighting system? It's amazingly bright!
Artwork! The crabs fight made me smile. Your videos are unique and captivating ! Looking forward to what's coming next.
Thank you so much Julien!
Great video including places I've cycled myself and many mnay more I haven't. Admittedly I chuckled at a couple of your pronunciations of places like Musquidobbit Cheers
Thank you! Yes apologies, sometimes I will mispronounce things. Especially with indigenous derived place names. Will try to put better effort into getting those right :). Very glad you have enjoyed the video though.
Will be there in July
What a beautiful ride and videos. You stopped so many times to place your camera, ride, retrieve it during this trip. And then hours of editing it. Thank you for your dedicated efforts to bring to us what you see with your eyes and feel in your soul.
Great footage and a nice experience to see the province from a visitor's eyes, but next time please ask locals how to pronounce some of these place names. You outright killed me with Musquodoboit.
Fantastic adventure!!! THank you for thaking the time and effort to fim all this for us.
how many kilometers did you ride in this video of quebec ?
about 1500
amazing adventure ! thank you
Nova Scotia, I'm coming!
I did the Celtic Shores Coastal Trail and the Cabot Trail in 2023 (starting from Montreal) before heading to Halifax and taking the train home, your videos bring back good memories! I remember crossing that sketchy bridge at 24:06, I was going full throttle!
Thanks! Glad the stories are able to remind you of your experiences there. And yes, what a terrifying bridge that was. Seriously might be the worst I crossed in Canada. Doing it at night I think actually helped.
Have also biked that bridge (daytime) Probably my sketchiest bicycling experience ever. Cabot Trail is great, though.
I sent you a Facebook message . Wondering about your bike set up.
We all wanna know that...hope he does a Q&A.
Amazing series - I appreciate the time and effort you have put into cycling, filming, editing, and posting! Thank you!
Thank you so much!
Yay! Thank you for another video!
Wondeeful!!! We will have to check some of these places this coming summer. Thanksnfor sharing!!!
Another great video. Thanks so much.
Next bikepacking adventure: SCOTLAND!!!!
another beautiful adventure
I included a trip around PEI (bridge over, ferry back) during my across Canada bicycle tour. Very nice side trip and highly recommended. Loved these videos as a way for me to reminisce about my trip back in the day.
Do you have Garmin files of your routes that you could send to me? I'm particular interested in PEI & Quebec. I would love to use your route as a planning tool.
There are routes linked in the description. You should be able to export them as needed. I've also included links to the actual route maps (route verte and island walk). Those should be a good starting point to build a tour.
@@nathanstarzynski Thank you. I should have remembered to look there. Excellent videos.
Back in the day when I did a northern route bicycle tour across the U.S., I cut across southern Ontario to avoid the big U.S. cities south of the Great Lakes and it was a very good decision. Southern Ontario was one of the highlights of the trip. Some years later, I did a cross Canada trip on a route that stayed ~100-200 miles North of the border and it was one of my very best bicycle tours ever. Great primitive camping and wildlife and very welcoming and hospitable Canadians.
Love these videos. I’m impressed at the lack of flats😂
Thanks! I don't usually film flats, I just fix them. Don't think I had any in PEI though.
@ I think I would have liked to see more of that behind the scenes stuff. Show the struggle lol. Great series. Looking forward to the ns video.
Nice! I rode solo across Canada 🇨🇦 this summer myself. Quite the experience!
Another stunning film. Inspiring!
Thanks for a great video. This ride is definitely on my bucket list.
Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine are one of Canada's best-kept secrets and cycling there is great!
Superb cinematography and composition. Wow and wow.
Hands down - the best video of X-Canada trip I have seen. At least from the 'b-roll' perspective. Highly enjoyable. You certainly put a lot of work into filming. I did the trip in the opposite direction in 1976.
I have enjoyed watching your cycling adventures. We did a similar PEI/Les Isles bike tour in 2023, although we drove from BC instead of riding there to begin our adventure. Traveling cycling adventures like yours have helped to inspire me to expand my creative abilities (old school photo person) and I have purchased an action camera to learn to do some videography to record my trips rather than just stills. (The drone shots make me think I might have to make another investment!) Thanks!
Inspiring! Do you have your bike specs, gear etc posted somewhere? Did you ride the same setup all the way across Canada? Would you change anything? Thanks for these epic videos!
Nice video Nathan. Technically Prince Edward Island is in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. If you taste the water you get a hint of salt compared to the saltiness of the Atlantic Ocean.
Absolutely brilliant video (again!). Wonderful that you embraced the opportunity to cycle the Isles des Madeleine!! Stunning part of your journey!
Thank you so much! It was so worth the trip over there. It was a tough decision to take the ferry back after just one full day on the islands, but that same constant rushing is what brought me so many places across Canada (and the world). IDLM has definitely been calling for an extended return visit at some point. I didn't mention it, but ironically it was the only place I'v ever had something thrown at me from a vehicle (beer bottle out of an oversize pickup trick... of course). Can't let one sad lunatic spoil the rest of the wonderful nature and people there though.
@@nathanstarzynski WOW! Sounds like a return trip is in order indeed! AND, I'm sorry to read of your encounter - your attitude is sound ... don't give them the power of your dismay. Rise above it (though, it was in S. Manitoba that my partner and I were threatened death nose to nose when we crossed Canada - ugh - rattled but pedal strokes cure all! ... and he was in a pick up! 🤣) ... thank you again for the inspiring video and fleshing it with tales from the road in your kind answers. Wishing you Tailwinds!
If I may ask. what headlight you are using during night ride? Nice vid btw
SON Edelux II powered by SON 28 dynamo hub.
Another wonderful video Nathan. You are an inspiration. Thank you.
Geez I am enjoying your videos. We recently moved from AB to Australia and I dearly miss the mountains. This was beautiful.
Well done! We visited PEI - my father's homeland - about 5 years ago and loved it. Beautiful video.
What a great video! If you don't mind my asking, how do you go about selecting your 'wild camping' sites. Do you just wing it, and look for private-ish spots, or do you use any sort of site like ioverlander?
I do use iOverlander a lot, and have used it all across the world. It's a great starting point. Otherwise, I'm looking at google maps for beaches, small parks, or wherever I think will be suitable based on the location. Usually I have a destination in mind for the day, but thats always flexible, and will often change by the late afternoon.
So beautiful... again such a great video.
