I've seen this movie about twenty times. Unfortunately, the Rat Line that got Nazis out of Europe copied some of O'flaherty's tactics and techniques. They were saving less valuable people.

Many know this story because of the biggest earthquake and tsunami that the city of Lisbon ever survived... Around 🕒 years after... A flock tale is told that because of this crime, tge city of Lisbon payed their price... The story is known by Portuguese... Unfortunately today we see the far right growing and a vield anti Semitism... Lisbon needs a museum like never before to count the stories so many of resilience and preserverance ... There are so many stories yet to be told... Please visit Cascais and on a bench tree polish Jewish friends, looking at the gardens of the casino of cascais... Their story and of so many other... I wonder even if it is safe to speak or write ....

Such a superb film and, even more so now that I know it was a true story. Father O'Flaherty.......what an amazing human being ! Risking his life to save so many others. And, then we find out that he also saved Kappler's wife and children too ! Such courage, such passion such kindness. It's wonderful to hear that such precious people actually exist. Quite humbling to watch this excellent film.

A radical Monsignor this was. Anyhow, although I was Protestant raised, not Catholic, I truly liked, admired the profound commendation the Pope, at the end of this film, bestowed on the radical Monsignor. By in humility Confessing to him how he was mistaken of what the Treasures of the Church were and realized that the true Treasures of the Church were extraordinary people living on Earth to do Good for the CHIRCH and Humanity's sake, like him - this Radical Monsignor. Warmed my heart immensely, this Noble confession and recognition.

I descend from Portuguese Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism. I wonder if any of them were in Lisbon around this time. I hope not.😭 This was so hard to watch, especially knowing that my ancestors were persecuted violently for being jewish for a long time.

Gregory Peck sure made a diverse career. He played Msgr Joseph O'Flaherty of the Vatican’s Holy Office here. And, in the Boys From Brazil he played Dr Josef Mengle a German Schutzstaffel (SS) officer and physician during World War II who creates multiple clones of Hitler.

Wow, well the liberal and open Portuguese people do talk about this, I am indian immigrant in portugal, and I didnt knew how horrifying the actual crime was.... Hindus have suffered the same in Present day Pakistan and Bangladesh on the hands of Islamists... and I feel the pain of Jewish people. But I hope present day Portuguese are not blamed for the actions in Past.

This movie is played on Aussie government owned tv SBS occasionally. In spite of the great actors, I must say, unfortunately, I find the movie tedious. Watched it only once.
