The Bristol Centre for Surgical Research is a multi-disciplinary collaboration aiming to transform patient care by increasing evidence-based surgery. The centre tackles key questions relevant to patients, clinicians and the NHS and is working to inspire and train a new generation of surgeons to undertake high quality research.
The specific aims of the centre are:
-To design, develop and deliver trials and prospective studies in surgery in collaboration with regional and national centres in all surgical specialties.
-To provide a training programme comprising short course and workshops in surgical trial methodology for trainees and consultants and to increase the capacity for trials through career development of surgeons.
-To provide specialist expertise for ‘difficult or complex’ trials because of recruitment issues, outcome assessment or other challenging methodological issues relevant to surgical trials.

Surrogate Outcomes
Surrogate outcomes can include things like survival, improvements in quality of life, or relief of symptoms. Researchers may use surrogate markers because they may allow new drugs to be approved more quickly to treat serious or life-threatening diseases, such as cancer. However, surrogate endpoints aren’t always a true reflection of how well a treatment works.
This project was aimed at developing and disseminating updated CONSORT and SPIRIT guidelines to help researchers measure and report surrogate markers in trials.
The work was led by:
• Rod Taylor, Professor Population Health Research (MRC/CSO Social & Public Health Sciences Unit) at the University of Glasgow
• Ms Oriana Ciani, Associate Professor of Health Economics, Bocconi University

This 3-day surgical research training event on surgical trials is for foundation, core and specialist trainees of all surgical specialities. It is run by the Bristol, Oxford and Aberdeen Surgical Trials Units. Well done and thank you Paula x me too 😢 Hysterectomy 2008. First time I ever heard of Mesh was post operation. Now have lots of problems with Sacrospinous colpopexy mesh plus the suture attachments. My operation records were “destroyed”. I also have noticed my gait has changed but no one is really listening 😢

Taoly thxs!!! But The inclusion of the term spirituality in the title is a bit misleading since in the presentation the existential and philosophical aspects of dying are considered more than spirituality (terms that are not to say the least, are also important too!!)
