I've noticed that the hard difficulty is all OVER the place on the different sites. The most friendly sites will highlight black cells that have the correct number of lights around them, so you can cross any other unlit squares off, and also highlight black cells that have too many, or not room for enough lights around them. in both of the latter two cases, you turn the light you just placed into an X. Sometimes you can use the fact that the puzzle has exactly one solution to eliminate cells. a placement of a bulb that allows multiple placements that aren't by numbered black cells to light up the same combination can't be correct. So if there are multiple spots not by a numbered cell that light up the same squares, none of them can be correct. If placing a bulb in one place then allows you to place another one in multiple spots not by a numbered black cell that light up the same stuff, then the one you just placed was wrong. If you have a rectangle of 4 corners that are not next to a numbered black square, and a bulb must be on one side, then there can be NO bulbs on the opposite side, because both opposing corner placements light up the same squares. This can save you from having to use trial and error on harder puzzles, especially this last one.

Another tip: If the two numbers on opposite ends of a row or column add up to N+1, then N will be located at that number position from their vantage point. I.e., if a column has a 4 at the top and a 2 at the bottom and the grid is 5x5, that means 5 has to be at the 4th spot down/the 2nd spot up.

I would suggest learn to play the game well, then only start to explain it to other people

You're not good at all at this game. Not surprising that you don't enjoy it that much, given that your puzzles were way too easy and even that way you hesitated whereas they were obvious.

For hard levels you can look at next door neighbours across the top. The one with the higher amount needs to find spaces not shared by the smaller value. I was going to get more tips like this one. I’m still finding some larger levels impossible to solve.

There's this app called number sums on Android which is quite similar but instead of working out what adds up, you eliminate the numbers that don't. I enjoy puzzles like this. The math part of it energises me - and I hated math in school!
