Garmin 430 the digital side. Finally!
This video is the follow-on for the video we recorded some years ago on the Garmin 430 radio side and the Garmin 340 Audio Panel. We had wanted to record the digital/GPS side for some time and finally got to record it in 2021.

Can you calculate the Accelerate Stop distance?

As our runway at CYRO is shortened due to construction, this gave me the idea that students and pilots might need to explore the idea of short fields and the calculation of Accelerate-Stop distance.

Becoming a pilot
Переглядів 893 роки тому
I recorded this video a few months ago, in part as an experiment of "green screen" recording [which explains the odd green tinge] and to talk to the impression I always get watching a captain and first officer walking through an airport calmly and composed. I've thought since then of re-recording it, but I'm not sure I could do the explanation as well as I do it in this version. A final thought...
Manual E6B calculator basic
Переглядів 2544 роки тому
This is an older video but I think the subject is very relevant. Who wants to learn how to use an old E6B manual calculator? Surprisingly a lot of pilots still use them for simple calculations and particularly to check distance/time calculations in the air.

This video was motivated by a student who didn't really understand Latitude and Longitude and how to use them on a map. The example is in Canada, in the Ottawa region, but the principles apply everywhere.

I did this video last year when we started using the CX-3 at our school, but didn't upload it then. We finally decided to use the more affordable Sporty's E6B, but I really like this calculator. This is just discovering it, next video (ua-cam.com/video/FG-o1D6zC_Q/v-deo.html) we'll use it to do some practical calculations.

Sporty's electronic E6B is an aviation calculator for student pilots to do the necessary calculations for a cross-country flight and to answer questions in an aviation written exam. In this video, I am discovering the E6B, and doing some basic calculations. In a second video: ua-cam.com/video/v_cHhOpvZpM/v-deo.html, I explore how to use it in various scenarios.
Garmin GTN 635 video (updated)

In this video, my friend Chris describes the operation of the Garmin 635 panel-mount aviation GPS in his airplane. The Garmin GTN 535 is fully capable of guiding IFR flight in RNAV or ground based navigation. You can upload a flight plan from an app like Garmin Pilot or FltPlan directly via bluetooth.

Thank you this helped lots
Good. Glad to hear it.
Great lesson Jean!
Thanks and Merry Christmas!
thanks... hoping to visit Arnprior, Carp, Rockcliffe and Gatineau in a few weeks, this is just what I needed!
Glad you liked it. My pleasure.
Thank you so much for sharing. Very detailed.
Hello, I'm having a hard time trying to convert fuel punds to liters, any hints? I have the same CX3. Can't find anything for the conversion.
Hi Christopher. Try this: to convert 10 pounds fuel to litres: hit Flt>Fuel. Use down arrow to highlight Wt, use CONV UNIT button as needed so it shows LBS, enter 10; then use up arrow to highlight VOL, hit the CONV UNIT button to change to L and there you go. Answer is 6.31 L.
@@aeroposte Thank you very much! It did the trick.
Thanks Jean, that was very helpful.
Pls. master the cx-3 before making a video, you make too many mistakes.
very good
excuse me sir this is not a related question but i have a cx 3 flight computer and i tried to update it and now it won't turn on will you be kind enough to help me with a backup of your cx3 to see if it fixed mine?
you don't need to input colon for minutes etc. just hit conversation, it will toggle thru minutes hours and seconds. same goes for other units of measurement from gallons litres to temperature etc.
This was a good video
Thanks for posting. i didn't know this feature existed. i can use this to fill out that dreaded flight log.
Thank you, very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Cool!
why can you not enter a negative Celsius number into the flight computer. You can not even convert a negative Celsius number in this calculator. Crazy. The people who designed this flight calculator is not the brightest bulb.
Hello Kimberly. You can actually convert a number to a negative number: just hit the +/- sign bottom left corner, beside the period.

Use the '+-' Button in the bottom-left corner instead of the individual + or - buttons on the right side. If you find a way to use cos() for the load factor questions let me know!
Actually, it is a very intuitive computer and easy to use. The negative function is eradily accessible for temperatures. Excellent video BTW,
Do you know how to use climb and decent using cx-3?
Hello. The Climb/descent function in the CX-3 is generic, not for any particular aircraft. What it does is tell you what rate of descent or climb (feet per minute) you should use, for instance, to descend from your cruise altitude to circuit altitude. It asks for distance, how much you need to descend, what your ground speed will be and it gives you Rate of Descent and Angle of Descent. Just fill in the numbers in the Climb & Descent feature in FLT. Hope this helps.
I love the calculator overall but the one thing i dislike is the battery panel. GOD the battery panel, this was the second time I've opened the calculator to place the batteries and one thing I recommend is have a bit longer nails lol. Both the times I had short nails and both times I've bled a bit. Other than that it's a solid product 👍
You are so right. I always have a small penknife in my pocket with a flat blade screwdriver. Works really well! It also serves as a nail file in case of problems. :-)
Very good presentation
Thank you!
Good updates, you used a function I was unaware of , I like the plan / Leg function , I can see where it could be useful on the FAA test. btw I scheduled to take the exam 02-02-2022 👍
Good luck for the test!

Can it calculate ground roll?
Hi! If you mean distance to take off? Then no, you can only use the calculator functions with the airplane flight manual to calculate the takeoff ground roll. Or do you mean "ground speed"? If so, you can calculate expected ground speed during the planning (PLAN, leg calculation), or calculate actual ground speed during the flight (FLT, Ground Speed). Cheers!|
@@aeroposte yea I meant ground roll but that’s ok. Just trying to make my life easier for the exam. It would be great if you could go through all of the functions you know. I just got my calculator yesterday
@@corbonik8100 Good idea, I'll try to get around to do that soon.
very good for the first 2 min then your camera is not showing the E6B. I don't know what buttons you are pushing at all
Hi Mark, Thanks for the comment... You are right, I was not showing the buttons for a good part of the calculations. Oops! I have another video using the Sportys E6B and doing similar calculation. Where I did a better job: ua-cam.com/video/VOjFE_SvdRI/v-deo.html Cheers! Jean
how do i calculate time en route on the flight computer?
Hello Kai. Time en route in this case is leg time as there is only one leg calculated. If you have more than one leg, then time en route would be the sum of multiple legs. In this video, I only calculate the leg time from the set heading point to the destination, but en route time would be that plus the time to get to the set heading point, in this case about 12 minutes. So calculation of leg time starts at about 8:10 in the video, and is shown in step 4 in the summary at the end. Hope this helps! Jean
Thank you for this video iv got a CX3 flight computer it taking me a bit to get the hang of it but am getting thair and this video as help me to understand it more thank you once again mate i.l watch out for your videos
You can Store all this then goto calculator then bring it back to where you left off. good video
Thank YOU !
Can we use batteries of other brands once these drain off?
Yes, certainly, as long as they are the same size.
how did you do it can you share with me , thank you
If you are referring to calculating ground speed and drift angle, please see this video, starting at 1:30 ua-cam.com/video/_1e2VEO0tdA/v-deo.html).
Wright it down what he saying mate. He his jumping about a bit to fowllow. you can Store it all by pressing C buton Then go into Calculator.then go into recall. to get it all back up keep working at you get mate. but wright it all down what he saying mate . Good luck you get it
Wow, the only and best video on the gtn 635. I, too, have a 635, so how do I remove the transponder field if I don’t have it connected to one? Thanks for a great video.
Hello Pilot 509. I asked my friend who owns the airplane and he tells me that he needed to ask a technician with the magic password from Garmin, and it took only 10 minutes.
@@aeroposte thank you
Well I wanted to listen to this video but after the 15th and ahhhhhhhh and ahhhhhhh and ahhhhhhh and ahhhhhhh I stopped.
amazing, please consider make part 2 of your video
Yes. I actually filmed it recently, but need to do it again as the sound was terrible. Thanks for the comment.
Can I complete PPL and CPL written exams before starting flight lessons?
Hello. I'm afraid not. For the PPL written test, you need to have done 10 hours of flying, and for the CPL, half of the total time (200 hours) required for the licence. There are other requirements also, for instance, your medical certificate has to be valid and appropriate for the level of licence.
where do u obtain true airspeed?
The TAS is an input to the calculations. I choose the True Airspeed from the Pilot Operations Handbook, Section 5, performance. I select it to be appropriate for the temperature and pressure altitude.
@@aeroposte brilliant thank you sir! Did my first flight using my first flight plan this afternoon. All went smoothly thanks to your video :)
nice
Thank you!
How did you get the variation of 14?
That's a very good question. Two answers: it is actually incorrect, should be 13 W. And I should have gotten it from the top of the map by the dashed line where it says 13 W. Silly mistake. Jean
@@aeroposte I am not saying you are wrong. I am a newer pilot and I was just learning how to do my nav log... so I was trying to see where you get that number from. Thanks for the info, I now see it on my sectional!
@@TLHRookiePilot Fair enough, I didn't think you were criticizing. I just realized when I was looking at the number and discovered I was wrong. Cheers!
hello, is there any way I can get a copy of your flight worksheet, thank you? Mark gruntfire009@comcast.net

hello do you have a video for calculating TAS given a mach number and OAT?
Hello Paul. Not much use for Mach calculations in the videos I do for Private Pilot Licence, but I tried it. I selected Speed, tabbed down to Plan M#, entered 15 deg C, and Mach 1, and got TAS of 661.7Kt. Wikipedia says that Mach 1 = speed of sound = 661.49Kt. Pretty close. Cheers Jean René de Cotret
whats the provision for a USB pin port on the side ? charging ?
Hello Pranam. Very observant. I never noticed that port. Here is what the manual says: "The CX-3 accepts a micro type B-USB plug (not included) to connect to the computer. This feature allows users to save their settings and data. Once connected to a computer, the CX-3 will be displayed as a mass storage device when the unit is turned on. The file “data.cx3” can then be saved and reloaded back onto the CX-3 after factory defaults have been restored. Instructions for updating the CX-3’s firmware can be found in Appendix B on page 19, and the procedure for backing up and restoring data is detailed in Appendix C on page 20." I'll need to add that to the video. Thanks.
@@aeroposte thank you..
where do i buy this in canada for an affordable price??
Best price I have seen in Canada is at www.vippilot.com/pilot-accessories/cx-3-electronic-flight-computer-p045 $134.95.
I asked Jean why is it recommended to stay at 1200' until you cross the Gatineau River before climbing when you take off on Rwy 09 but then depart from the downwind to the WEST. It seemed to be inconsistent with the recommendation to climb to 1700' when taking off directly from Rwy 27 to the WEST. The reason is because there are aircraft coming to the airport at 1700’ on the EAST side of the Gatineau River while you are leaving on the downwind for Rwy 09. But when departing from Rwy 27 going directly WEST you can climb to 1700’ and there should be no conflict with those arriving at 1700' on the east side of the Gatineau River. I hope this rationale is clear as the two different altitudes departing to the WEST seemed inconsistent to me without an explanation. Thanks Jean.
