Hi, my name is Chris. How are you? I'm addicted to clawhammer guitar and clawhammer banjo. I like to cover old folk and blues songs and also do a bunch of originals. Thank you for checking out my channel and please don't be a stranger!
O Death (Old Time Folk Song, Clawhammer Banjo).
I first heard this song from Clifton Hicks when “Old Leatherstocking” sang it. Later, I discovered other versions from Lloyd Chandler, Nimrod Workman and Dock Boggs. Most people nowadays play it in the style of Dock Boggs so I decided to try something different and came up with my own arrangement. I hope you like it!
Lyrics:
Oh what is this I cannot see, with icy hands getting hold of me?
My name is death, none can excel. I open the door to heaven or hell.
O death o death, how can this be? I’m unprepared for eternity.
Yes I have come for to get your soul, I’ll leave your body and leave it cold.
I’ll drop the flesh from off your frame. The earth and worms both have a claim.
O death o death! Please spare me o’er for another year!
O death o death can this be true? Please give me time to reason with you.
From time to time you’ve heard and saw, I’ll close your eyes and I’ll lock your jaw.
I’ll lock your jaw so you can’t talk. I’ll fix your feet so you can’t walk.
I’ll close your eyes so you can’t see, this very hour come and go with me!
O death o death! Please spare me o’er for another year!
O death o death consider my age, and please don’t take me at this stage.
My land and wealth is at your command, if you’ll just move your icy hand.
No land no wealth no silver nor gold, nothing satisfies me but your soul.
The young the old the rich the poor, the like with me they all must go.
O death o death! Please spare me o’er for another year.
O death o death please let me see, if Christ has turned his back on me.
From time to time you’ve been asked to bow, you didn’t take heed and it’s too late now!
O death o death please give me time, to fix my heart and change my mind.
Your heart is fixed your mind is bound, I have the shackles to drag you down!
O death o death! Please spare me over for another year!
The children pray the preacher preach, but time and mercy are out of your reach.
Too late too late so long farewell. Your soul your soul has been summoned to hell.
As long as Christ in Heaven shall dwell, your soul your soul will scream in hell.
O death o death! Please spare me over for another year!

Children of Zion (Freddy Badger, Rev. Gary Davis), Clawhammer Banjo

I learned this song from Freddy Badger and he got it from Reverend Gary Davis. Rev. Gary Davis played guitar, however, so this is Freddy’s banjo arrangement, and I changed some parts. You know, I’m not a religious person, but I love these old time spirituals. I think they exemplify the human experience.
The Storm is Coming ~ Clawhammer Banjo Original

One day I went out to mow the lawn before the storm, but I’m like Kid Rock and before I cut the lawn, I go behind the garage and fire it up. Before I started the lawn mower, I looked at the dark clouds coming and I heard some crows cawing and thought to myself, “the crows know that the storm is coming.” Then, this song was born as I mowed the front lawn and just before a big storm. Something to...
Yankee Doodle ~ Clawhammer Banjo
Переглядів 250Місяць тому
This old traditional song/nursery rhyme, was first made up by a British medic to make fun of the Yankees. The Yankees were simple people and thought that putting a feather in their hat made them fancy, but they were no where near as fancy as the Brits with their macaroni wigs. Later, the song evolved into a patriotic song for the Yankees and is now the state song of Connecticut.

Shifting Realities ~ Clawhammer Banjo
Excellent take on this classic Chris! I like how the banjo sounds like it`s almost crying in certain spots! Sounds amazing!
Oh cool! I didn’t realize that. Thanks so much Dan. I found a recording of your version and it was really good. But didn’t you used to have a video of this song on your channel? I couldn’t find it.
@@clawhammerchris My version was horrible so I took it down. It was clawhammer but too rough and uneven. Your clawhammer version here is great. I play mostly fingerstyle now but I might start recording using the index lead upstroke style. It sounds ok when I play but when I record it doesn`t sound very good. So I guess I`ll stay with fingerpicking. Wish I could have learned the claw though cause I like that sound. Nice to have a few tools in the tool belt
@@DanDDirges 😆it wasn’t horrible! I liked it and apparently someone else liked it enough to put the audio on their channel, so it’s still out there. When I first heard the banjo, I knew immediately it was you, then you started singing and I thought, yep, that’s Dan.
Yes, very good. You're quite right about versions in the style of Dock Boggs becoming a little over-familiar, so a big thumbs up for doing something different but retaining the hypnotic feel.
Thank you very much, Gen! I appreciate that.
GSPs are crazy and dgaf.
That ain’t no lie!
Привет с Алтая
Thank you!
WoW! Nice fingerpicking and composition Chris! I didn`t know you could fingerpick!
😄now you know. Thanks, Dan! I still want to learn some styles
Great job on this one.
Thank you, Brooke!
Great cover Chris! Maybe it`s time we started the war on drugs back up again. So many lives lost and or ruined. Such a great song and cover! Kool fuzz guitar outro chord!
Thank you, Dan! There sure are some nasty drugs out there these days, too. I’m gonna stick with the whiskey and weed. 😄
Heck yeah!!! 😊
Thank you, David!
Look at that fancy finger work!!!
Thank you, Brooke!
Amazing playing! I love it & wished i had the time & someone to show me a little bit on the banjo.
Thank you, Brooke! Maybe someday…
Chris, i do the same exact thing. You'd think i could come up with a good song by now. We come up with some groovy stuff when bored.❤
Ain’t that the truth!
Garbage and I didn’t subscribe. I bet it smells like burnt @ss hairs and he sitting there recording.
What the $&^%?? You ok clawhammer ??
Yeah, I’m ok. Thanks for asking, Curt. I wasn’t doing so good at the time but now I’ve shedded my old skin and a new future awaits. Thanks again!
I was about to ask u the same thing. Hope you're feeling better in every way! ❤❤❤
@@brookegentleobannonmusic thank you, Brooke!
You threw your hat in. I get that. But what did you lose?
Those hats are overrated. Well done. Edit: This video is garbage but I subbed for the banjo content
Thanks for subbing, I appreciate it! Plenty more banjo content on the way and hopefully no more garbage.
Absolutely FABULOUS! MUCHO GRACIAS SENIOR 💓!
Mucho Gracias to you!
Ground control to major Chris! Check ignition and may God`s love be with you! Big like!
Thank you, Dan! I’m floating in a tin can.
Like the scratch ends 😅
Thanks, Kim! I guess they represent time dragging.
I feel you brother !!! Hang tough 💣 yo
Thanks!😄
New sub enjoying your clawhammer style Chris. Have you on notifications and listening to the end. 🤠😎👏👍👏
Sounds great, Bruce! Glad to have you and thank you!
Saw your comment on Tyler's video and was curious to hear your version. Well worth seeking out, and I'm now subbed. Thank you.
Thank you very much! I’m a big fan of Tyler’s. Glad to have ya watching!
Great energy on this one. Even though that's not how you spell Cuckoo... It's a great song. You, Dan Dirges and Seth Mountain are making me a fan of the banjo lately. Hi Dan. Thumbs are up ✨6✨
😄Sometimes it’s spelled that way with certain old time artists. You should get a banjo and get started playing, Jared! I’m glad you’re liking it!
@@clawhammerchris Oh yeah, can you imagine an ex gothic, classic rock-'n'-roller like me jamming with a banjo? I may tolerate it but you got to know, it still is not a cool instrument. I've never seen the ladies flock towards guys who play the banjo. The guitar is my weapon of choice thank you.
@@DeplorableJaredBrodersen That's funny you need a guitar to get a woman ? Maybe you should get a job and buy them dinner go old school. Lol
@@curtleiker4436 Uh, I don't need a guitar to get a woman because women are into rap and hip-hop because they have no taste in music. Only old-timers are into the banjo. Even Brian Setzer failed at rocking out with the banjo, the loser. I need a guitar because it rocks and makes me feel good and it's far superior to the banjo. I don't do music to impress the ladies. I do music for me and the few who still love rocknroll. And last I heard, women take good care of themselves and don't need a man to pay for dinner. They handle that on their own. I would like a job so if you know anybody in the San Bernardino county who's hiring without experience let me know.
@@DeplorableJaredBrodersen Copy that I love me some ol rock n roll I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan twice once with Jeff Beck once with Joe Cocker. I was just messing with you buddy I hope you're having a good evening
I have a banjo and this might just get me to pick it up and learn it!
Yes!
Cool take on this one man. Nice job
Thanks for watching!
What a great song! Excellent Chris! One of my favorite songs!
Thanks, Dan! Me too. I really like your take on it.
Sounds good! The title is perfect. I see them people pickin' the lettuce right now, haha. Thanks for sharing! Hi Dan. Thumbs are up ✨3✨
Thanks, Jared! I was weeding the garden and accidentally pulled out a baby lettuce and thought it was a good title.
Great original composition Chris! Makes me want to do some cloghoppin flatfootin moves! You`re really playing some great banjo!
Thanks, Dan! Grab one of your cats and dance a jig!
O hells yea Bomb digity yo !!
😄Thank you, Curt! I was hoping you’d say that!
WoW! Great song! Incredible banjo pickin and singing!
Thanks, Dan! It’s nice to get compliments on my singing considering how I used to sing. 😄
I second what Dan said. Great job on the singing and banjo playing! Hey Dan. And Claw hammer Chris, it's never too late to come to Jesus. Remember even he was against religion. He just wants a relationship with us.
@@DeplorableJaredBrodersen thanks, Jared! Actually, I was thinking that I might want to start a religion so I won’t have to work anymore. Just get up in the pulpit and jump up and down then play an old spiritual banjo song. Nobody would have to wear church clothes, neither.
nice work man! I was thinking of pioneers and Americana on this one!
Thanks, Dave! Yeah, kinda like escaping persecution.
Bomb yo Dog still my favorite!!
Thanks, Curt!
Nice Chris! Another one of my favorite blues guys.
Thanks, Folkenbluzer!
Great rendition! It's a pleasure to see another banjo picker playing this tune, and an honor to be cited as a source for Clawhammer Chris.
I’m glad you like it, Freddy! You’re an icon and I’ll be citing you again in the future.

Now I'll have nightmares from such haunting music
Oh no! 😬 Thanks for listening!
Well done Clawhammer Chris! I like it. Yes, the crows do know when a storm is about to come. Another storm is coming too ... the election in Nov. It's going to get ugly I'm sure. Thanks for sharing. Thumbs are up ✨8✨
Thank you, Jared! That might be the storm the crows were talking about.
💣 yo !! My favorite song from you is the with your pooch !! Still 2 thumbs up
Thank you, Curt! That’s my favorite song too. Klaus is my buddy.
Heck yeah bro! I love your compositions. Cool background too! Storms a'coming!
Thank you, Kenney!
Yeah brother! First thing i notice is you telling it like Son did before he performed it. You made it work man 👍👍 wasn't sure what to expect on the banjo.
Thanks, Man! I can tell that you like to watch those old Son House videos too. I love it when he talks about the blues.
@clawhammerchris for sure. So cool that stuff is out there for us to see.
Nice one Chris!
Thank you, Brother!
Great song Chris! Excellent banjo and singing!
Thank you, Dan!

Very interesting haunting space banjo! Love it. Thanks for sharing. Thumbs are up ✨22✨ And subscription checked ✓
Thank you, Jared! Happy to meet you!
So true what you said at the beginning. The word says to worry and be anxious for nothing. What can worry add to your life? Like you said ... It'll just send you to the grave faster. I'll try to keep my lamps trimmed and burning. Amen. Thumbs up for this cool slide guitar. Hey Dan. How you doin'?✨11✨
Thank you! Sometimes it gets scary and it’s difficult to keep positive.
@@clawhammerchris So true. Especially when you're homeless like me.
@@DeplorableJaredBrodersen That would tend to put a damper on your lamp, but don’t let it.
Very nice Claw Hammer Chris. Saw you on Dan Dirges channel. Thanks for sharing. I'm not the biggest fan of the banjo but I'm trying to keep an open mind. Thumbs up for Yankee Doodle. 🤗2🤗
Thank you, Deplorable Jared! I’m a big fan of Dan Dirge. Never thought I’d be a fan of the banjo myself, but now Im addicted to it.
Very nice Chris!!
