Runaway urbanisation is certainly part of why many wild animals that would normally shy away from humans and human settlements are increasingly found near them. Leopards' capacity to adapt in incredibly uncertain and volatile environments is a testament to their innovativeness and creativity. Urban policy is going to need to put in provisions to protect them, manage human-wildlife conflict, and cut back on habitat fragmentation

Found you via Jamie's Sentientism pod. Yes, feral "invasive" cats and other species are a complex - human-caused - problem. I have a feral cat on "my" land. She is tame to me only - and just had 3 kittens, which are now weaned. The kittens do not trust me yet (they will in time). All 4 cats already catch small rodents and birds - which the foxes usually get (4 foxes there too). I'll get the cats spayed/neutered and release them again - and keep feeding them all, including the foxes. - BECAUSE right next to "my" land a big house was just built which took away habitat from the foxes, and the rodents, and the birds, etc. That's my small solution to the complex problem, but it's not really a great solution...😾🦊 🐭 🐦🏘 PS: Raccoons, skunks, an owl and more are also living off that small piece of land...

Welcome to The Animal Turn :). It sounds like you live in a beautiful place with many animals The idea of who is feral and not is just so interesting. While some domesticated animal certainly don't want to live wildly many others do. The discomfort this seems to raise is interesting and there are certainly no easy solutions.

@@theanimalturn I guess whether they, or anyone, wants to live wildly depends on the "wilderness" surrounding them. "Pets" living trapped in a dysfunctional human "wilderness" are not better off than feral ones who have found a niche in nature. All depends on the niche I guess. We all need a niche.😁

I recommend reading ‘Darwin comes to town’, in which the author Menno Schilthuizen highlights a parallel between ants building nests or mounds and humans building cities. In both cases, new habitats emerged to which other species have adapted evolutionary. This parallel really made me look differently at the urban, and that its distinction from nature is not working.

Thanks so much for the recommendation! There is something fascinating about how often comparisons between ant and human civilizations are made.
