Toyota Prius tows loaded 4x8 Uhaul trailer 1300 miles
Used a 2011 Toyota Prius to tow a bedroom size load from San Antonio Texas to Fargo North Dakota. I’m sure it was well below zero in this video - had minus 10 degree windshield washer and it froze in the tank.

1 Nov 2020 seems like more than 2000 to 3000, maybe more, vehicles, trucks and cars assembled at Cowboys dance hall for an exciting show of support for Donald Trump for 2020. Cultural diversity noted in attendees. What do the majority of these people have in common? They most likely do not listen to the misguided fake news outlets ie. CNN (Clinton News Network), MSMBC (HeeHah), Huffington Compo...
Q--Do you think I'd be able to tow a 4x8 Uhaul trailer behind my 2007 Hyundai Elantra? I'm also moving to a new state 1,300 miles away and I'm just trying to figure out how to get me, my cat, and my car and my very small amount of stuff all there in one trip and without spending 1,200 dollars on a moving van and a car dolly combo...you seem like a dad who knows what hes talking about....penny for your thoughts haha, thank you? :)
I wonder if this would work with a Nissan or hyundai
Do you think I can haul a 6x12 on a 2020 Nissan Altima with the right hitch attached?
How fast did you go?
What was your mpg before and after towing?
How much weight? And any mechanical issues?
Did you make a video installing the trailer hitch?🎉
Did you weigh the load??
can you post links for the Hitch, ball, and ball mount plz?
One question. That ball joint attachment does uhaul give that to you with the trailer or you have to purchase your own? can you please also let me know what comes with the trailer to attach and safely operate it?
I got the same question!
did you say you intalled the hitch in 30min?
i'm about to buy a trailer with about the same weight, but its way taller. how fast were you going to get 23mpg?
Where did you get the installation of the Hitch done? I'm desperate of getting one on my 2017 Model.
I was looking, U-Haul has the cheapest and easiest installs I saw unless you're gonna do it yourself, in which case it's like half the cost
I don't think that there are concerns regarding a automatic transmission. The main concern would be making sure the trailer bearings are greezed and have proper air on all tires. What about overload shocks .
Good video. Can my 1997 camry pull this ?
Use premium fuel. It makes a huge difference in hauls like these
wow, that's a nice advice!
I wonder If I could tow a costco ftx functional trainer for about 3-4 hours? The functional trainer weigjts about 550-600 lbs plus the trailer.
Thanks for doing this video. I was concerned about doing this: Vehicles: 2012 Camry 4 cyl. , pulling u-haul 4'x8' trlr. (same as in video). Cargo: 1 Honda EU7000is generator, (carton size appx. dimensions 24"W x 35"H x 45"L) wt. appx. 300lbs. Distance: Tehachapi, Ca. to Bullhead City, Az. (generator pickup) and return (appx. miles 550 to 600). After seeing this, I'm confident the Camry will do this. Thanks again for the video! Cheers.
I did the same, with a 2005, SATx to NY, and got better mileage. My hybrid batteries had been replaced a year or two earlier, and my load was probably a little lighter. It was also in winter, with snow on the ground up north. U-Haul installed the hitch and wiring for me, and I had no problems with it.
23 MPG towing trailer versus 48 MPG normal is a big drop. But I suppose it is just one time and for what you are hauling you would get that mileage if you rented the UHaul van. Thanks for sharing the stats.
YOU didnt move the whole 2 mins??
Excelente
2010 Prius base 103k Wil be towing 1600lbs for 1300 miles next week.Lets see if I can beat 23 mpg!!
Can you update on the trip?
1300 mile 1600 lbs avg temp 65-70 F … avg mpg 23-24mpg … no oil consumption…2010 Prius base 103k
Hey man! Great video, I’m about to use a 2015 Prius to tow a 4x8 trailer (maybe a 5x8) slightly concerned about the transmission, any tips? 😃 already got the hitch and wiring installed
You'll be okay. Just dont smash the throttle at every light and be mindful of transmission temperatures on long uphill climbs.
What’s the total weight of that trailer and gear
Good dads are treasures. God bless you and your daughter sir.
How much is it to rent one of those?
I think 230 pluss tax its like 260 total 4 days and for like 500 miles
Milage would have been better if the weather was warm
Hi that trailer is 850 lbs. They say do not tow more than 1600 lbs is that correct in your opinion. Thanks.
I have a prius, my class 3 hitch is rated for towing 2,000lbs and 300lbs on the hitch. I use it for my 13ft fiberglass jon boat, a bike rack, and a fold down cargo trailer. The boat is definitely near the 2k limit when fully rigged up. I have a Tahoe and Tacoma for uphill mountain lake fishing trips. It's just the cost of gas means I'm using the prius for road trips.
The Engine is not normalally made to tow things,
I'm thinking about getting a tow hitch and a Uhaul. Naturally I don't wanna stress the transmission. Wish I had an easy way of weighting all my stuff
*Maybe go to a Truck weigh station? Best Wishes. 😊😊😊* Sharon in SC
Go to a landfill or recycling transfer station. Take some trash with you. They weigh you on the way in and on the way out after dumping trash. If you load up your Prius and use the roof rack you’d get a really close estimate

Why wouldn't you show what it looks like inside/what it can hold? Price? Anything? Really no useful info. Not helpful.
You could literally Google it. A 4 ft x 8ft trailer listed on Uhaul's website. You should be able to get an idea I what you can fit with that info
This is not a uhual commercial. If you want to know that stuff, go to their website smart guy.
Did you drive through Montana with it ?
Texas is almost straight shot south of North Dakota, so no.
How much did it cost for the hitch and installation and to rent the trailer?
Go on Uhauls website and it will show you pricing for everything with install.
I have a 17 Camry hybrid cost of hitch and install was under $300 if you want the wiring then $450 I did t do the wiring had Toyota do it specifically since it is a hybrid Toyota knows what there doing heard from friends that usual and other places did the wiring and they hybrid had electrical problems car won’t turn on or too much power, or rear lights didn’t work. I had Toyota do my wiring another $250 never had a problem. As for the trailer it varies on size from $30 bucks and up
Hitch and installation was about $370 in Jersey
Can I laod a 5'8 u haul trailer behind my 2012 chivy cruze ? Any help would be helpful.
Awesome job 😁
I see some other comments on here. Surprising what a vehicle can tow. It's about loading safy and within limits. Marketing would rather tell you you need a $80,000 super duty truck for a task a car can do or a small SUV can do. Pulling a 30,000lb goodneck, you need a super duty truck. Pulling a small boat, a small cargo trailer, a small vehicle will pull it or a small SUV will pull it just fine.
Wow. What was your average speed on the open road.
Hello I have a question I will be grateful if you answered me I will travel from California to Florida with my nissan altima 2015 4 cylinders with a uhaul 5x8 I will put 700 pounds on the trailer whether or not it is a good idea please I need an answer thanks
Not a good idea. But it may be possible. Look in your owners manual and look up the weight it can tow. You can go slightly above that limit, but it is not recommended and will cause much more wear and tear on your vehicle than normal. You would do better to use the 4x8 or tow the nissan behind the big uhaul truck.
I've towed a 2200lbs trailer with my 07 focus from Florida to California
do the 4 x 8 and it will be safer.
Look at the owners manual of what the weight allows. You have passengers & other things in your Nissan besides the trailer as well? If you go with the 4x8 it’s 100lbs lighter than the 5x8
unbelievable it could pull that
toyota baby
I can pull it by myself without a car. Not surprising at all.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q At 70 mph ? woow!
@@maxwell6774 70 millimeters per hour, no problem
@@user-tb7rn1il3q you might even be able to pull 70 meters in an hour
How much weight was in that trailer? 23 mpg is a 50% mileage loss, which seems extreme for a prius...
It's hard to tell, but I have some other info. It's possible winter gas was gotten at some point. No grill blocking. I'm sure they were in the "power bar" area of the throttle eco bar thing, just to keep speed. Not only is it payload they're taking on, but aero drag and tire drag. My 2010 gets 37-38 when it's spring and fall. Summer and winter hurt mpg a fair amount. Best I ever got when I first got it in '17 with 163k was 41mpg calculating at the pump. I recently put bigger at tires on it. Right now I've been getting about 32 on the trip counter. I'm not sure if it's because winter gas and or because I dropped the tire PSI even more. 28F 26R I think it was.
The first few trips with tires at a higher psi, my mpg was unchanged. But my speedo is +3mph (60 is 63) now so I think I was getting even better mpg.
The aero drag of that square box is huge at highway speeds, particularly in such cold dense air. 23mpg means the car was working quite hard. I've towed a more aero trailer on the highway, 95 degrees and got 40mpg with my Prius.
@@rich.trails what size trailer if you don't mind me asking?
@@chrischung2365 4x8ft. Loaded up with furniture I seem to get about 40mpg. I can get 50mpg if its a light and aero load.
I'm about to make a 1500 mile drive from forthood texas too central Pennsylvania, I'll be using my ford escape and the 4x8 uhaul trailer. Any tips on the speed and such ?
I drove a 6x12 uhaul with a 4 cylinder jeep from the mountains of Colorado all the way down 70 to somerset, PA. Load your trailer right and you should have no problem doing 65.
Richard T. Hope your moving went safely. Peace and blessings
Yo did you make it? Any tips? I have a 2006 Ford Escape about to haul the same trailer
