I take an early spring Nebraska road trip to try and catch one of the most amazing looking fish out there, the Orangethroat Darter.
similarly we have redfin pickerel here and a few of my friends have searched for them with success. It's really cool to see how these smaller species of esox get around and survive in the wild using their small size to their advantage. I figure you dont find many of the other bigger species (even smaller chain pickerel) in those same waters? Or maybe you find some young ones that explored around? It's like the grass pickerel fill in the niche of holding in those skinny headwaters. As you see it just needs a few weeds and inches of water and it can stay put and hunt. Must be cool to watch them tackle topwater bugs like damselflies. It's wicked how still they can be and how they blend in that way.
We do have waters where Northern Pike and Grass Pickerel both inhabit, but yes, typically the grass pickerel are inhabiting much smaller water than the northern. However, we do have a couple lakes in the state that have both where there have actually been documented Northern Pike/Grass Pickerel hybrids.
Do grass pickerel get much bigger than that? Here in New England, we have northern pike, muskie, and "chain" pickerel- and those can rival pike in size. I've caught several 30"+ pickerel. Kind of a nuisance tbh.
No, adult grass pickerel will rarely be over 6-8”. it’s the smallest esox species in the world! We also have northern pike, musky, and chain pickerel here, and they’re all a blast to pursue!
@@flyingpickereloutdoors5317 Oh wow. I didn't know that. Very cool!
That was awesome, thanks for showing off a cool little fish. The narration and camera work are great, and I appreciate your conservationist mindset.
Awesome! Thank you!
Interesting. In Manitoba, we call Pickerel 'Walleye' and Pikes we call Jacks. Pickerel are Walleye.
Walleye is an entirely different fish.
@@_Stetsi Not in Canada it aint.
Go in and flip rocks while using a scoop net
Just caught my first darter in arkansas. Found out they are endangered. At least the redfin darters are
Awesome video man, I really appreciate this kind of content! I am from northeast Kansas and I catch an occasional darter while seining minnows for crappie fishing. I think Kansas has somewhere around 10 or 11 fish in the darter family. I know we have Johnnys and orange throats here in Marshall County for sure. That’s all I’ve caught personally, but have researched the others online and some of them also have lots of bright colors, similar to orange throats in a way, just different coloring. You should check them out! And if you’re ever planning a trip to my area I’d definitely be down to try micro fishing with ya! It’s never crossed my mind to catch darters on rod and reel, but I like it! Sounds like a challenge!
Cool video man. That's a beautiful fish. I know Florida has some good fishing, but sometime I'm jealous of the other parts of the country.
Still looking for a photo tank I really like, but a photo bag or photo tank let’s the fish be examined longer without harm.
Excellent. Love those colored up orange throats!!
Very cool
Catching darters from outside of the water is no easy task, well done sir!
VERY COOL!!!!! Love the underwater footage!
Best Video on UA-cam! Very Educational!
