    This is a well explained video, but how do you layout, say a 24 page book with front and back side printing? What word processing program will work? In other words how do you actually print the text on the right side in a simple manner? Thank you in advance.

    Enjoyed this very much! Thanks for sharing your lesson. You mentioned right at the very end that after this first print you might make some changes to the block before printing again. I'm curious if you clean the block up before reworking, and if so, what's your favourite method? The times I've had to do this I often need to throw away the next few prints because in cleaning ink off the relief I stain the negative spaces of the block and it shows up. I use oil and then detergent to clean; maybe I should be a bit more thorough 😅

    • @hannahskoonberg
      @hannahskoonberg 11 місяців тому

      In this instance I am printing my student's block. If there are only a couple of changes I would likely just carve that with the ink still on the block. It also helps you to see which spots are filling in. Before you smear the ink everywhere.

    • @hannahskoonberg
      @hannahskoonberg Рік тому

      The plate will be stained but It's pretty well sealed at this point. I could clean it up with some mineral spirits and make some changes if I needed. Mainly if I needed more light tones I could add another layer of medium.

      It's a sort of faux aquatint using a collagraph technique. You glue down silk and then build up gel medium on the silk filling in the pores and creating smooth spots. Then you intaglio wipe it. I hope that's a little more clear...

      @hannahskoonberg Рік тому

      I have done that before as well but often I want a little more control with a drawn image. Especially with light gestural marks I may want to include. Sometimes threshold will give more of a bitmapped edge.

    What is the difference between Collagraph Print and mono prints

    • @hannahskoonberg
      @hannahskoonberg Рік тому

      A collagraph is generally a matrix that is made out of cardboard and found material. While a mono print is more like a painting that is then printed through the press. The mono print is a one off while a collagraph can be editioned.

      With the plate your image is bit as a texture into the metal. This means you can wipe ink against the metal and print multiple of the same image. At the end of the day the plate is the tool and not the finished artwork.

    • @hannahskoonberg
      @hannahskoonberg 2 роки тому

      For this I used oil based printmaking ink. I don't remember exactly what I used in this video since it was print at home pandemic times. But my favorite black in is Portland Cool Black by Gamblin. I find etching inks print relief just fine and then I can use one ink for more printmaking processes. Clean by scraping as much as you can onto old newspaper wiping down with some veg oil and follow up with a household degreaser. Or if you ventilation is good a little gamsol will clean it up faster.

    We moved to index printing from simulated process about 5 years ago. It creates better prints because the image is using a full dot and not a half tone which gives more of a muted color. Plus managing dot gain is much easier. Dot gain with a half tone can drive you crazy. One thing we do different is use an image dot size of 188. We use a blend of 225 and 280 mesh on each print.

    What would you use as a fixing agent if done on fabric?

    • @hannahskoonberg
      @hannahskoonberg 3 роки тому

      This process doesn't have a fixing agent like photos often do. Just the water and then it's fairly stable. But warning it will still react to detergents and stuff if you try to wash it. So it's not an ideal process for wearable fabric. But for fabric wall art you should be fine.

    This was an interesting diy home version of collography, thank you! (I think you rushed those stripes. The angle was wrong if depicting a horizontal surface from that angle.
