    The real answer is that anime and manga writing tends to be pretty amateur power fantasies with mediocre characterisation, wonky prose and weak narratives. But they prioritise the power fantasy. Kids like power fantasy because they like to daydream about it themselves. That's why spiderman is so popular. Everyone likes to imagine what it would be like to have spidermans powers when they're kids. The "maturity" in shounen is more often than not just violence and that's a pretty surface level attempt at maturity. A more mature audience wants deeper, more nuanced plotlines that rely on tension and emotional stakes as opposed to "who can out punch the other guy". Those kinds of stories will have older casts because its more believable to have an adult behave like an adult and grapple with the tension and stakes at hand than a literal child. You're really going to struggle to find that kind of nuanced storytelling in many anime, let alone shounen. In the past 5 years I could probably only name like 7 shows that fit that bill in anime. The shitty isekais are not where it's at. Due to the lack of shows and manga like that, audiences will turn to other forms of media such as novels or TV. They're not comparable but Severance is a million times better than Help I Woke Up In Another World But I'm also a Tax Deductible Spider or whattever the fuck isekais have turned into now. I actually feel things when I watched severance, I laughed, I felt tension, I felt affection and empathy for the characters and care about what happens to them. I think this is why season 2 of vinland saga was so divisive as well. Younger audiences wanted a power fantasy and were disappointed, older audiences appreciated the overall themes and thorfinn's character arc and how season 1 was just a prologue.

    Cause they're the main demographic anime is geared towards... Before 2008 financial crisis there were a lot more serious shows and adult protagonists because financial viability wasn't always the goal (rule back then was make 1 to make money, make another because the director is passionate about it.) Not to mention many are simply weirdos, like that something in the Abyss show, the director/creator basically made a kids show with occasional S&M here and there for no reason whatsoever.

    i actually have struggled watching anime for exactly that reason. this is my last year in school and i fear what comes next. i fear loosing all my friends and i don't quite know what will come next. seeing all these anime protagonists starting their journey at a new school, making new friends and start making new memories makes me feel a little empty. i start thinking about all the chances i missed, all the adventures i didn't take and the place i will leave behind in phew months. thank you for the video, it makes me feel like i'm not the only one struggling with growing up. its sure scary, but i think that at the end of the day, that thats the beauty of life. if i'd stay 18 forever i wouldnt appreciate every day that is gifted to me.

      I feel you. I'm sorry, but as a dude slightly older than you, I want to share my not so great experience. So, I graduated from high school in 2023 and since then I realised that I lived an empty life and missed some of the most important years of my life. I was a ghost that no one really cared about. All I did was play video games (and I wasn't good at them either). My health has gotten worse over those years. Since then I've been trying to rebuilt myself: I tried various hobbies and found out that I want to be an artist, I started going to the gym, I tried to socialize with people... But even after all of this I feel like crap. This void is paralyzing me and it's hard to do anything. Sometimes all I can do is lie in bed and cry (I'm a man). I feel so weak, so ugly, so pathetic... I AM A FAILURE. Even now, I'm failing college and will end up being a disappointment to the father who paid the money for it. I want to matter. I can't watch anime anymore because I crave love and connection. But I want to escape from the pain, so I keep doing things that shut down my brain for a while. And don't get me wrong, I am trying to socialize but all I get right now is indifference. There must be something that I'm doing wrong, but right now they don't care about me and they live their own lives while I think about them. Why do I feel like no one will ever love me? In the end, after all this whining, I also have to admit that I'm not going to give up. No one is going to save me, so I'll have to keep saving myself, I have no other choice. It's dark out here, but I will keep showing up and hoping for something, anything. Sorry for such a comment.

    a lot of teenagers write stories, or people get into manga and stuff as teenagers so maybe base their stories around that?

    • @velvi8359
      @velvi8359 9 днів тому

      Its because the largest demographic of people who watch anime are teenagers, like there's plenty of manga featuring adults but they don't get greenlit for anime series at the same rate. Shonen manga (manga for teenage boys) tends to be the most popular manga in terms of sales and usually the biggest show of each season is a Shonen Jump property. It's just a simple matter of supply and demand.

    Part of it, I imagine as someone a bit older, is that stories require change. And, frankly, the older we get, the more likely we are to become stagnant or rigid, for better or worse. As such, we also are more attached to the identity we claim. So, the age where we question, wonder, and have to start making personal decisions and judgments, is the age that we tend to find ourselves able to either remember, look forward to, or see ourselves in.

    This is something I’ve been saying. The kind of filler that just extends the canon archs are annoying, but when you use filler to develop characters, it adds so much to the show and honestly what makes shows like Naruto and even one piece with the g8 arch so special

  • @riskforthebiscuit4073

    In the end i believe it all boils down to the characters of a show. If they have somewhat a personality, you can have them do casual stuff and its actualy fun to watch what happens. If an entire show is only intersessting because of the plot, like bleach. Fillers are going to suck regardless of how much effort is put into them. This is why gintama characters can hold a funeral, and everyone nows what episode i am talking about. But hardly anybody even remembers how all the 13 captains in bleach are called. (Let alone the extra ones and the vice captains.) To many people doing the exact same but whit a different trick to it.

    There's two lazy tactics of writing "genius" characters, which the first one is make everyone else look dumb, and its VERY overused and very noticeable since the author pretty much removes the common sense of the rest of the characters, surrounding the MC with idiots to make it look good in general, there's a lot of manga/manhua/manhwa that are like this, this happens a lot in cultivation manhuas, which the MC is an underdog treated as trash, then receives its ex-machina and suddenly everyone is circle-jerking him into a genius. The other one is to add an "implicit clairvoyance" trait on the character, but the latter can be written well, if executed well, Columbo is the example of the latter, which show the audience the crime first, and then in the end the "recipe" on how Columbo caught red-handed the criminal, also taking the audience by surprise.

I don't really think about what kind of message I want to send to the audience. it's more, I have a story I want to tell, and the meaning itself is contained within the plot. not really an insanely intentional decision, but more of a natural progression like I described in the video.
