Rover 800 launch - 5. Pave to ESH comparison
This is the last of 5 videos used in an IMechE presentation in 1986.
It features footage of prototype vehicles being driven on pave surfaces to gather road-load data. This data has then been programmed into the Electro Servo Hydraulic (ESH) rig to allow the testing to be automated.
The comparison shows how well the ESH rig tests correlate with the original.
The ESH rigs were initially installed at Canley, Coventry but were later moved to Gaydon.

Land Rover Freelander Design and Engineering 1997
I have a 2003 freelander I like it.
I have a freelander 2 3.2 petrol, wat a smooth ride ❤
That must be a rarity nowadays !
Sweet❤
When cars were normal, before SUVs made them stupidly big, out-of-proportion and expensive.
Music overpowers the commentary Mr Editor ! Spoils it too!
Lynn you can keep saying it, but I'm not driving a Mini Metro
It does not have permanent 4WD, the VC requires some slippage between front and rear.
In Saraevo: to the Chicks!
I'm in this!! 😁😁
When in the vid? 😎
One of the problems none of this talk of trying to save cash by lowering engineering costs could fix were the ‘Portfolio’ models R3 (200) seen here at 9:21 & particularly HHR (400) at 9:58. These were already signed off & underway when BMW bought the company (so they could do nothing about them) & came with very expensive Honda licensing fees so Rover struggled to make a worthwhile profit to go towards developing replacements from them. The R3 was a good car but Fiesta/Corsa sized & priced at Escort/Astra money. The HHR was probably the car that finished Rover Group off. Nothing like as competitive as the previous R8 200/400 & cost Mondeo/Vectra money. It’s quite sad watching this really, knowing how it all ended.
I love my freelander 1 td4, hardly any rust and it's 23 years old and still going strong :)
I wonder if dealers ever got frustrated in trying to sell top spec metros, without the option of 5-speed.
Can I install front towbar on my freelander 1
Such a shame Corgi or Matchbox didn't do a diecast model/toy car of the 800 saloon or fastback. Unlike Norev which produced models of their domestic cars
I love this car,is my favourite and I can't wait to buy it when I will grown up because I am still on school
You have good taste at a young age 😄
@@arrgalumni Yeah
They've rebadged it, you fool!
Love how they showed a non metro engine bay at 6:19. McPherson struts on a metro? 😂
Land Rover started by Rover and finally just Land/Range Rover; MG was belonged to Rover until hiatus then the so-called SAIC obtained MG and worst closed MG Longbridge place down for good...
It certainly had its problems and what they managed to create in terms of a Market Niche was amazing on the budget but it certainly came with its problems. Freelander 2 on the other hand was probably the most reliable model they ever made both before and after. It’s one of the few things Ford got right with their involvement
I wouldn’t call the freelander 2 reliable - the older freelanders with the Rover L-series diesel engine were really solid and reliable and it’s only until the TD4 they had lots of issues
Its Rare Spot Dont like 👎
Its Strange Spot😱😱😱
I don't know how they are subjected to tough resistance tests and when they leave the dealership they start to fail, I love the Freelander but I had one that had a cylinder head gasket failure
I love the silver free lander vehicle😍😘
I was lucky to attend the ¿1999? Birmingham Motor Show where Opel / Vauxhall Zafira (“It rusts like fish” was the legend with this MPV sunk in a fish tank) Jaguar S Type, and also Rover 75 were unveiled. You know what? The Rover model presented a much more attractive interior than the Jag’s… being similar eye catchers at their external lines. Surprisingly, in 2020, in a non planned action, I saw a V6 75 unit with low mileage for sale and bought it on line, just after asking the seller to send me a video of the state of interiors and a cold engine start. Several days later a lorry brought the car home and after 3 years I have added 5.000 kms on the clock. I drive the car every two weeks at least for one hour to keep it fit. This car draws a smile on my face every time I drive it. And I agree: it is heavy and its steering system could be clearly better… but I love it.
Glad you're enjoying it. There seem to be so few cars around now with 'character'...

On of my jobs at Gaydon,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Owned a mk2 820 Si in BRG green, apart from the usual T-series HG oil leak it was the nicest car I've ever oened.
I used to frequent the Rover centre in Reading my home town.
BMW just wanted the MINI name and Land Rover 4x4 systems for X5
This is a myth. The X5 was based on the E39 5 series AWD estate. About the only LR tech it used was Hill Descent Control & that wasn’t invented by LR, it was bought in. They weren’t thinking about the New MINI when they bought the company either. BMW lost a fortune owning Rover Group & were still out of pocket after selling LR to Ford. They would’ve been better off financially never getting involved.
It was the tie up with Honda that brought all this about- BMW approach was all wrong and not viable. Should have continued the Honda link
If BAe had invested more in Rover they would’ve been able to move away from relying on expensive Honda technology & make something better & more profitable than the new 200 & 400 in 1995.
Its like watchin paint dry LOL
Any on the 2005 LR3?
Too new! The LR3 is a JLR product not an AR/RG...

I love all the attention for their computer aided design. Including people typing while nothing happens on the computer. Just for the video. CAD was state of the art back then. It took more than a second to render a wireframe of graphics. Now even a phone can do it 1000x faster. My mom had a Rover 100. It was a nice car. Seemed very solid until I years later saw the result of a crash test with this car. Terrible safety rating. I'm glad we never had a crash with it. Later she exchanged it for a Rover 214. It was involved in a pileup collision with a Ford Ka. The Ka was a write-off. The Rover 214 hardly had a scratch.
Привет из России у меня Ровер 75 универсал.😊
Yes yes, get some shots of the car going through the seawater! Won't that destroy the underneath of the car?! Nahhh it'll be fine!!
We have cars daily like bmw m340i and BMW X3…..but I love my Freelander 1 !!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤

Well, I’m glad I never saw that advert because I probably wouldn’t have owned the three that I ended up having
The pinnacle of BMC/BL/ARG/RG/MGR history. BMW bought the group right at its peak and it went down hill from there, although not all BMW's fault.
I wish BAe had invested properly in RG during their tenure, no continued reliance on Honda IP, enough money for new models. Could all have been very different.
Not Rover 800 seen in this video but great M'O models
All that testing and they still rattled! 🤣
Excellent video, thank you so much for putting this up. Love the music. Love the M16 cylinder head on a desk, love the clay modelling, love seeing Gordon Sked and Geoff Upex in their younger days, love the voice of the late and great Roy Axe.
Gotta love the cheesy 80`s music. The special editions of the metro shown are the true meaning of the phrase "You can`t polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter"
I love the 800, particularly the R17, but (and I don't know if it's the incidental Muzak) but this reminds me of the promotional video for the MD11. Maybe it's just the era.
All they did was refresh the body and interior and plonk it on the elderly 1970's Metro platform achieving economical gymnastics to keep the price low, and when it became the 100, it's shortcomings and failings became apparrent in a dreadful 1* EURONCAP crash test result, and not even a driver's airbag could make up for that.
Certainly crash safety caught up with the car in the 90s but the R6 Metro/100 had all new powertrains (K-series, & diesels with 5 speed & CVT gearboxes) and rode so much better with interconnected Hydrogas suspension.
not the brightest are you
That is delightfully bereft of any knowledge!
@@TwinCam All I say IS true actually, the pre Rover Metro / 100 had a driving position akin to driving a bus, and the reliability was shocking on many models of 80's Metro with various faults and problems (indicated in Which? reports), and to make the Rover Metro, they merely refreshed the body design and interior fixtures to provide better ergonomics and to make the driving position more normal, then plonked it on the elderly Austin Metro platform that was designed in the 1970's, and later on, when Rover retired the name METRO, and called it the 100, things went well, until a certain EURONCAP crash safety test, suddenly blotted the car's copybook, and caused a frenzy of newspaper stories of the car being dangerous, which Rover didn't expect. and all this negative publicity, forced Rover's hand and pull production in 1997.

There's no point finishing the sentence Lynne, because I'm not driving a mini metro.
At 2 minutes 22 seconds. Is that Gerry McGovern?
Yes i believe it is. Roy Axe, Gerry McGovern and if i am not mistaken, a very young Richard Woolley.
