Let Me Introduce You: Author Marian Schembari, on Writing and Publishing Memoir With A Big Publisher
Find out more at marionroach.com.
Listen to my podcast QWERTY here: marionroach.com/category/qwerty-podcast/
Marian Schembari is an author and essayist whose first byline was at age eleven in Highlights for Kids. It was a poem about dragons. Since then, Marian’s essays about travel, friendship, money, and love have appeared in The New York Times, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, and Good Housekeeping. By the time Marian Schembari was thirty-four, she’d spent decades hiding her tics and shutting down in public, wondering why she couldn’t just act like everyone else. Therapists told her she had Tourette’s syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, sensory processing disorder, social anxiety, and recurrent depression. They prescribed breathing techniques and gratitude journaling. Nothing helped.
It wasn’t until years later that she finally learned that she wasn’t weird or deficient or moody or sensitive or broken. She was autistic. She was thirty-four. Her memoir, "A Little Less Broken: How an Autism Diagnosis Finally Made Me Whole," is just out from Flatiron Books.
Listen in as we discuss how to write and publish memoir with a big New York publisher.

Let Me Introduce You: What is Author Branding & How Do You Do It with Shayla Raquel
Thank you so much for having me! I had a great time talking all things memoir ghostwriting :)
@marionroachsmith I so needed to hear so many of the messages contained in here today. I have been battling back and forth in emails with two band members who have exclusively wanted to either tell me I can't do my UA-cam channel and memoir, or bring up a million things I ought to be worried about, such as what an editor may do to my work, or that an agent or publisher may be more inclined to make me squish my two or three planned memoirs into one, etc. I was incredibly disheartened to have creative collaborators treat me like a daughter with plans for a creative career, a parent inclined to talk her out of it. And certainly, as I came to the page this week, tip of my pen, forming a word, all of their concerns and misgivings flooded my brain. Your podcast today has helped a huge amount in alleviating these attempts at derailment. And as for what's your bigger? Thank you! I am in recovery as mentioned in my above comment, but I have never managed to come up with a higher power, being an atheist. However, with my UA-cam channel I have plans to create a playlist wherein I'll create a spiritual ritual where I reconnect with family members who have departed, but were the ones who while living offered me unconditional love, such as my mom who passed 29 years ago, and my Grandma Anne who died around 2 years ago at 102. I need them so badly as positive influences in my life, but I'm still unsure as to where that bigger for me will come from - perhaps I will make it that practice, for a time, see how that fits. (Huge, massive thank you 💕)
@marionroachsmith I could not be more ready to write my first memoir, with the theme of addiction. I am 5 years clean in my own harm reduction recovery program, nothing stronger than weed and no more than two to three drinks in one sitting. I also attend adult children of Alcoholics meetings regularly and have found one meeting that provides me with such amazing stability. I've got your book The Memoir project and I'm very strongly considering that first course of yours the 90-minute class! I've started my own UA-cam channel called @prettywhitelady, the reason for this is that I can very frequently be treated atrociously within society, I've gone no-contact with several family members as the family scapegoat, and I also have experienced terrible workplace bullying, one case is before the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal from very severe mistreatment from a past employer - this allows my UA-cam channel to be a living memoir of sorts, and maybe perhaps 3 years or so from now I will be working on a justice themed memoir. I'm so glad I discovered you! You can pretty much guarantee that you will be hearing from me.
Thanks for hosting me, Marion. I enjoyed our conversation and I hope it was informative for your listeners.

Love the line “Before each writing session, sit in silence. Listen to your heartbeat and watch what goes across the surface of your mind.”
Thank you. It is lovely, isn't it? She's the real thing.
This is very helpful. Thank you.
I finished the first draft of a memoir this week. It's a big, shaggy first draft, at just over 150,000 words so far. I'll need to hone and cut, obviously, in the next draft. And I plan to use some of the tools here and in your audiobook. It's a daunting journey, but I think (and hope) the hardest part is over now.
So glad I signed up to your email list and got noticed about these fantastic resources - your UA-cam channel and the Qwerty podcast. Such an abundance of riches. Thank you, Marion. And thank you, Bill, for your practical advice and candor. 🙏
I love this so much!!! Lol
