Personal fanzine channel for the work of Mollie L Patterson, aka mollipen. Video games, retro tech, Japan, or whatever else I find interesting.
Fighter's History vs. Street Fighter II Character Comparison - Lawsuit Exhibit Video
This video comes from a VHS tape original given to DieHard GameFan Magazine by Data East as media outreach regarding the 1994 lawsuit Capcom U.S.A. Inc. v. Data East Corp. In this first tape of evidence, a representative from Data East compares seven characters from Fighter's History to ones that Capcom says Data East infringed upon from Street Fighter II.
Video captured from VHS by mollipen. At some point, I found the video interesting, took it home, and had it in storage until I just recently found it again.

VEGA . Ripping off Wolverine and Jason in Halloween.
Would they beat capcom in court today? I don't think so
So Dat east lawsuit went south...
yep. i remember this. especially fh and renting it, playing it with my father and thinking the chick and chun was too similar and i used to pick them both to piss him off. everything was a rip off of sf2 at that time lmao.
at 1:49 did guile just winked???
Yeah that’s Fighters History alright.
Is a COPY !!!
Just got done hitting my stizzy. And then came across this .
They copied the same special moves, character archetypes and presentation. Juuuuuussssttttt different enough to get away with it.
Guile is a copy cat of Donald Trump back in his early days
Part 2 please
Othen then these characters being exactly the same, they are not. We have fooled you!
Sanjay looks more like Adon than Sagat....
I didn't know it was legally a problem to make character art and games that were similar to other games. I thought it was only a problem if you used their code and artwork. There were hundreds of one on one fighters that were all similar in many ways. It simply isn't possible to avoid similarities. It's like how car companies can't avoiding making vehicles with 4 wheels and seats.
Fighter's History looks like a cool game wish i had a chance to play it
She needs caffeine
Fascinating overall situation. This is what the internet was made for!
>tfw no fighting game manager waifu
Best video of all time.
I'm so happy Capcom lost the case, it would had set an ugly precedent otherwise.
Matlok sure does have similar attacks tho. I never played Fighter’s History but saw it in the arcade in Ann Arbor in 1993. I was always a Street Fighter 2 junkie. Man I miss those days. I was in college at U of Michigan and arcades were still huge then
This is insane to watch as a 40 year old and ALSO this lady, in her Ex machina greatness, doubles as excellent accidental ASMR!!! 🤣
🖖
I love that you can quickly and easily see how little she actually cares about any of this bullshit.
Back in the 90s, Karnovs Revenge was a pretty good competitor! I played it heaps and enjoyed it but it paled in comparison to SFII. I only ever saw Fighters History on MAME in the 2000s. Never played it on arcade.
Wen you order street fighter from temu
I bought that fraud game cuz I was too high and I thought it was a Street fighter game .I brought it home and played it for 4 minutes and it sucked dick from the back Data East is full of liar ass poop
Chun-LI really took her news reporter job very seriously back in the day
Has anyone else fallen in love with the lawyer?
Why did I need this on a random Friday, after work? This isn't pertinent to my life in any way, but I'm glued to the screen rn...😅
this is gold. i loved every single comparison. who won the lawsuit?
Wow nostalgia
M. Byson is The Boxer and Balrog is actual name of M. Byson.
I ain't gonna lie. I find that their is a character that resembles exactly the same amount and resemblances kind of makes me think. Someone was very influenced. Whether you change the name or outfits. The algorithms are all the same. A sonic boom and the zangief slam, and worst. The same exact throw, but just adding to it. I get it though. There's always a fine line for artist to be influenced. But just lay homage. It ain't that hard. But the Japanese have too much pride. For example the Pokémon law suit today. Crazy
I love it how we see the characters do almost the same moves with comparable appearance and "she" is like "you see in the background is a plane this is not comparable with...".
Thanks, this is amazing! I can't stop thinking about the audience talking about this case, specially after watching this video 😂 We need to found part 2, this is now a LOST MEDIA HUNT!
i never knew this game Fighter's history exist until now
Fighters History Vs. Street Fighter 💀👍 looks like a promising collab.
Algorithm finally did me right today. 🎉
Guilty 😂
Did you notice the joysticks on both consoles? they are identical! As well as fighters history has a TV screen & three pronged AC DC outlet cord just like Street Fighter, not to mention they both use RBG color palettes, the plagiarism is astonishing.
So basically they ripped off the character, changed it as much as possible and kept almost identical special moves
I don't think they even changed the character's appearances that much. They basically went: "Where's this character from, Japan?" ... "Okay, we'll say ours is from China.," etc. 🤣
🧱🌳🌳🏠🧱🚪🚪🧱
"Despite being almost identical, they are not the same." The judge who agreed to that never played 1 minute of video games. The fact that she convinced him makes her the greatest lawyer of all time.
Face it, the game is copied. Now collect your lawsuit money.
Come on, it's obviously a cheap, brainless copy... Nobody remembers any... "fighter's history", what a joke. -Street fighter says: Eat me!!!
Thanks for showing off this piece of gaming history. It was interesting.
Round 1 FIGHT!! 😄 They tweaked it juuust enough to get away with it and make capcom fume. They have nothing on Jean Pierre and Fei Lin. I don't recall seeing this game in any of my childhood arcades. I remember them for their racers and beat em ups. Despite being a partial SF clone, it doesnt look like too bad a game. I might have put in a couple quarters back then, just to try it out.
I'm going to make a Burgertime clone but give Chef Pepper a beret and call him Chef Pierre. See, Your Honor, they're completely different because Pierre is French.
Yes, they're totally different. When Samche performs a flying knee strike that supernaturally carries him three times his body width, he yells out the appropriate name for a Muay Thai knee strike while Sagat yells out an entirely different phrase. See? Nothing alike. (Both characters then throw the same fireball, a traditional Muay Thai offense.)
