If you're staying in Portland, this oasis in the city is 100% worth spending a few hours to check out. I'd recommend going early in the morning or on a weekday to avoid the crowd, but even if it's busy, there's enough space where you can enjoy the soul-warming tranquility of the Japanese Garden! japanesegarden.org/ There's a parking lot and an ebike rack at the top.

Nice hike. You ever watch the film Earthlings?
Absolutely stunning ❤ Thank you. I dream about going for a long time. Your video is the best one I hv seen on Annisiboine ❤
Where did u park?
Were the portages between Nora Lake and Patricia Lake obvious? Some information I'm looking at says there is one long portage around the little ponds and on your map you have portage-paddle-portage-paddle-portage into Patricia Lake. Thank you.
Yeah, if memory serves, it was easy to find. There is one pond you can paddle across to cut the total distance down a few hundred m. It was muddy but pretty easy going.
When did you film this? I know the park has had some fires recently so was curious if much was recent burns on your route. Ice images.
I did this trip in September, 2023. Noticed some burns in the western part of Sturgeon Lake on the south shore if I remember right... but other than that, it was green and beautiful all the way through
hi. i very much enjoyed all the videos on your turtle river trip. it is on my list to do solo as the wife could never do all those portages. fingers crossed to get there some day soon. just curious where exactly were you able to leave your vehicle? it looks like there is an easy put in right beside the highway but it didnt look like you could park right there. is there somewhere close by to park? appreciate any input you could offer. thx again !!
I've driven past there many times and I've seen cars/trucks parked right by the put-in by the highway... there's enough room for 2 vehicles it looks like. I parked about 300m down the road (south). On the right, there was some space there to park. Very easy access! If you have any other questions, let me know! This route is a ton of fun and very rewarding!
@@OutdoorEarthling sorry just saw your reply. thx very much. i appreciate it. looking at going into quetico next week. lerome lake to sue falls. hoping to maybe get to turtle river in the fall. if not, next year for sure. thx again !!
@@rick00001967 did you go? What route did you take? I did Quetico last year (check out my vid on it if you want). :)
@@OutdoorEarthling so sorry. i do not usually comment on youtube so i never check messages. yes, i went to sue falls in May before the long weekend. solo trip for 4 nights. water was high so it was a nice paddle in. and the winds cooperated that day. was darn cold at night though. i packed light and only slept under a tarp. brrrrr. days were quite windy so fishing was a challenge. last day out was beautiful but got really windy near the end. the portage at sue falls is a challenge for an old guy like me but it is a nice area. i go into quetico several times each summer for the last 4 years. hoping to do a short 3 night trip up turtle river next week since i will be in the area. just wanna get a look at the first part of the route to maybe plan a longer trip in there next year. i am gonna have a look at your rushing river vid. that another place on my list.
Michael: great work! Keep it coming. . .
Thanks, will do!
I'm so glad that you posted this trip. Fantastic. I made a similar trip from Rushing River to Hawk Lake a number of years ago with my kayak. I made the mistake of taking the portage that connects the north end of Kilvert Lake into the south western portion of Hawk Lake. Ugh. I was on my own and hoped to make this portage with my kayak wheels. What a mistake that was. Your route seems much more doable. Thanks so much for sharing. Bring on the kayak season!
Thanks :) I took that portage too.... it's a beast. If I remember right it was almost 2km. I think I was able to put in at one of the ponds along it to the left to save a couple hundred meters though.
Fantastic! I'm now one more follower here! Greetings from Brazil!
Appreciate the sub and welcome! :) Have you been to Canada? Check out my SCT video by the way - did that trip last summer - it's one of the few trails not in a protected park meaning I got lots of really great drone shots!
Late September, Early October Did the 7 sisters Portages are grueling, water falls, and scenic views. ENJOYED the beauty of padding thru there.
Amazing! I'm planning another trip through Wabakimi this summer. Is that one a fly-in/fly-out?
That was a great video - thank you for sharing. I really liked the calm audio telling your story over the well calculated footage. I have only done the first 50 km so far but plan to do it again and hopefully more over the next years.
💚💚 Really appreciate the kind words! Yeah... Tin Hat and Walt Hill are really special places :)
Assinboine is the highest peak in Banff National Park and the highest point in the Saskatchewan drainage which is the fourth largest drainage in North America. It is an impressive point
Amazing footage, Michael! What an incredible adventure.
Thanks :). Some pretty incredible moments out there!
Glad to see your video of this trip. I planning a very simalar trip but starting and ending at Nym and definitely staying at that site on Sturgeon lake. I think Sigrid Olsen would stay at that site when even he was on Sturgeon. Thanks and take care.
nice. Yeah... that rocky cliff gets a lot of sun and gives a really cool view to the S & E! If you have any specific questions about the route, feel free to reach out outdoorearthling at gmail :)
Thanks for the upload. I recently did a variation of this route and the Pickerel River Portage (990m) kicked my butt. It didn't help that it was 35 degrees that day either.
There are some loooooong protages in Quetico. I really like routes with lots of smaller lakes & short portages... more interesting scenery in my opinion... and it gives the pup lots of breaks from the canoe. What was your favorite lake or camping spot?
Stunning!!
Thanks! Yeah what a gem! Only heard about the lake randomly through a friend just this summer.
Thanks Mike for sharing - what a terrific hiking experience.
Thanks Wayne! Incredible part of the world for sure!
I remember frequently driving on my lunch break to watch the Powell River ferry from Comox. Nice video.
Lived in Comox? Cool! I went in the other way (Saltery Bay) but yeah - either way in is beautiful I'm sure :)
how expansive was the heli?
$200 per person one way!
Great video, thanks for sharing! Is there a portage between Dogtooth Lake and Little Dogtooth Lake? It looks like there may be a stream connecting them, but I can't tell if it's something you can canoe/kayak through or not.
If I recall correctly, there is a short portage there. The portages in this park are insane though. Super easy to find, well-maintained, big wide trails. Enjoy your trip!
Great question. I have gone through this area many times on kayak. In my experience, ease of getting through is largely dependent on water levels. During my best trip, there was a ~10 meter stretch where I had to walk the kayak while in the water. Totally doable. The huge reward is the beauty of that particular area. It is wonderful!
You didn’t mention the Devils Staircase portage. It can be a bit difficult especially if it’s been raining
Yeah thanks! I hit that one on the way back... I was rushing a bit and my clip got messed up. Personally, I've seen a lot worse though... there was a portage in Wabakimi that I practically had to climb down a cliff solo-carrying a canoe... But yeah... you're right... Devil's Staircase was pretty smooth rock and I could see it being trouble in the rain - thanks for the note!
It is a good place.
heck yeah! Pretty incredible!
I am glad you made it up to Woodland Caribou... a very special place for me. Like many incredible paddling destinations in NW Ontario, WCPP is filled with unknown treasures, steeped in history, and remote enough to stay wild. With 2 seasons of no interior maintenance due to COVID, the crews are now just "catching up" with the portage clearing task... no small feat post-fires. As you know, wildfires in the Boreal are required for natural renewal... but for many years had not been allowed to burn as Nature intended. Now fire suppression practices have shifted to a more natural process of letting fire renew the aging forest, and they too have played "catch up". The road access has also since been repaired.
Great to hear! Appreciate the update & hope this finds travelers well!
One of the best leak on earth.
Cibecue Falls Trailhead is neat but kinda short, however its closer to Globe, AZ. I also recommend the always awesome Sedona, AZ as well.
Will check Cibecue Falls out for sure next winter - thanks! Yeah - been to Sedona lots and will be back again :)
Love this!
Was it just you and the pup? Do you have a drone? Using the branches to cross that water was awesome, and seems risky!
Haha it was about 4 hours of work, shoveling gravel, rocks and then covering it with branches. Super sketchy!
@@OutdoorEarthling did you have phone service in case it didn’t work and you got stuck?
@@reasonablevegan no cell service there (no service most places I go); however, I use a Zoleo device which gets satellite signal and allows me to send texts and location pings to people in my contacts list. It also has a button that calls in the emergency choppers ;) Balancing calculated risks... the key to any worthwhile adventure!
@@OutdoorEarthling Awesome! I am very jealous of your adventures. Hopefully I'll get around to some myself before long.
This is great!!
Canadas Matterhorn. Never been to it, but gazed at it in awe inspired wonderment when skiing at Sunshine Village.
Hope you get to make it someday soon! Well worth! 🤜
Polar Bear is the most remote park in Ontario.
Thanks for the tip... Might have to check that out!
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing! Did you have to book Marvel lake or was it first come first serve?
You have to book it. Marvel lake is through Alberta's site. Magog lake is through BC's site. Magog fills up really quick so that'll likely be your limiting factor. There are other options for places to camp on the way up if you don't get Marvel
What was the name of the first lake? Can it just be hiked to?
That's Lake Magog. The main campsite with about 50 tent pads is a 5 minute walk away :)
nice video thanks for sharing ☺️♥️ mystic beach is my favorite along this path
Mystic is awesome! :)
Nice video that brought back memories when we hiked up to Magog for 4 nights and day hikes, then caught the helicopter down when our departure day brought rain. 😊
Awesome! Glad you got to share in it too! What an amazing place!
good for you
Went there twenty one years ago and it was no where near as crowded at the lodge. What a beautiful place. We made the hike out in one day but splitting into two days would have been much more enjoyable
nice! Lodge was crowded, but the hikes (other than the one viewpoint at Nublet) felt quite remote. One of my favorite spots to date! :)
What month did you go?
Early July. If you go, make sure you get up there for a sunrise. It's epic!
@@OutdoorEarthling Should we do niblet/nub peak for sunrise?
@@charleswang6441 hell yes! There are lots of really good views on the way up, so go as high as you feel like, find a killer view and post up. You won't regret it!
Beautiful. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks! Yeah, they're the BEST! :)
Looking forward to doing this soon!
💯 should do it! Life's too short to miss out on incredible parts of the world like this!
I feel like home on this trail and am literally drawn to it every week! 10km day hikes are fun for me! Seeing loads of bears and cubs nearby! Never a dull moment on this trail :)
Very fortunate to live in a place you can access a part of the world like this on a weekly basis. Glad you're making the most of it! :)
Amazing! Way to go on a solo adventure! Trying to build up the courage but not as easy as a woman I suppose!
Well if you have a passion to do it, you should do it! Solo is a completely different experience... Extremely rewarding... Especially the first time you do it. Take safety and backup precautions (eg tell people where you're going, bring a satellite emergency device - I use a ZOLEO, and maybe start with a less remote park). Hope you give it a try! Feel free to reach out if you need help planning!
Planning to take on the PCT this summer, your video gave a great summary of what to expect! Appreciate the recommendations as well 😁👍🏽
Did you end up going? What'd you think?
Nice! Sharing on 'Sunshine Coast BC Canada' Facebook community page. Thanks!! Hope you had a great hike.
Appreciate that! It was awesome and I'll definitely be back soon!
