    This is compared to Misery a lot. Resentment would be a perfect name for the novel.

      @seoulbookclubbarrywelsh Місяць тому

      Yes, it is similar to Misery. I have never read the novel Misery, but I did watch the film. The aspect of being held captive is the same, but the circumstances and motivations of the jailer are quite different. Have you read any of Pyun's other novels? The Hole is probably my least favorite of her books.

    Wow, that was a really wonderful review of this book, one of the best I have watched or read.Han Kang is the first South Korean writer to win The Nobel Prize for literature and only the 18th women out of 121 winners to date. She has a new book translated into English called "We Do Not Part" that should be out in January, I am looking forward to reading it. Hello. I just finished reading this book. I found this in a library that mostly consisted of Korean literature. I am not a fan of crime or mystery, but the writing of the first part of the book got me hooked, and I wished it was longer because I was interested more about the detective. The book's first part reminded me of Murakami's type of writting but more direct and fast-paced (which I prefer). I just wonder if there is any connection between the first and second part of the book? Was the second part supposed to be humurous or mysterious?

    • @seoulbookclubbarrywelsh
      @seoulbookclubbarrywelsh 6 місяців тому

      @@nobodyelse5804 hello there. Thanks for commenting. There is no connection between the first and second stories. They are completely separate. I wish the first story was longer too. Kim has dabbled in crime in other stories like Diary of a Murderer which is also pretty great. If you liked Photo Shop Murder I highly recommended the film adaptation. Thanks again for commenting

    I found the novel to have an extremely unreliable narrator, in the literary sense. Most if not all of the Mother-in-law's actions (her care for the invalid, one way discussions, arranging the house, getting the care giver and therapist and firing them for poor performance, etc..) 'could' be interpreted as out of kindness and in the narrator's best interest; rather than the 'out to get me' version we get told. She was, after all, mentally deteriorating herself and also thrust into the care giving partnership with her son-in-law. . Remember that all his bed-ridden reality is filtered through his deteriorating perceptions and paranoia as he reflects on his own life, and he can only blink and move an arm slightly. Very poor communication skills, with both his visitors, care givers, but also the reader.

    • @seoulbookclubbarrywelsh
      @seoulbookclubbarrywelsh 11 місяців тому

      Interesting interpretation. He's definitely an unreliable narrator. Maybe his interpretation of his mother-in-law's actions is just his guilt surfacing? Have you read any of Pyun's other books? I think The Hole might be my least favorite of the three I have read.
