How to make Ceramic Water Whistles, POV Pottery #44
Learn how to make a ceramic whistle that uses water to sound like a bird! This video builds on the the skills learned from the ocarina videos, if you have not made an ocarina before, that would be an easier/recommended starting place. You will need: clay, rolling pin, small dowel or bamboo skewer, needle tool, wire knife or x-acto knife, rubber rib or metal rib.

Cylinder Pinch Pot, POV Pottery #43
Переглядів 6 тис.4 роки тому
A deceptively technical project, this assignment calls for tactile awareness (wall and floor thickness), form control, and a sensitivity to clay timing/moisture. Keys to success 1. Start with around 1lbs soft moist hockey puck shaped clay. 2. After making a hole in the center w/ your thumb, bend your thumb into a hook and slowly twist the clay on your "hooked" thumb. Flex your thumb, don't hurt...

They seem easy... but to make a pinch pot that has even wall and floor thickness is deceptively tough. Here we do just that, we make a half sphere pinch pot whose wall and floor are 1/8" thin! My three steps to success are: even wall and floor thickness, continual compression, and moisture management. To achieve even wall thickness, one has to choose to shift one's awareness to the tips of thei...

You’re a great teacher. I can only see your eyes when you hold the mirror though.
@@amylw33 thank you very much. I have a new video with some different views coming soon!
ive always love the bird whistles and seeing how its made omg i love this!!!
@@elizabethflores1511 Thank you so much!
Star quality ❤
What a great explanation, thank you!
What’s the advantage of opening it so it’s a V shape as opposed to I shape?
Great question! the "V" shape acts as a funnel and allows the very tip of the fingers to be lubricated. Just as a drill bit entering metal will sometimes also be lubricated. The "I" shape hole often does not allow water to get to the finger tips because the clay is tightly wrapped around the sides of the fingers. Hope that makes sense.
Your amazing
@@ripross2520 What?! You’re amazing!
Thank you for clarifying.
EXCELLENT. ONCE YOU SAID THE WHISTLE PART BE ABOVE THE WATER LEVEL BUT THE SKETCH SHOWED WHISTLE END BELOW THE WATER. WHICH IS THE CORRECT ONE?
@@harishshah2510 Sorry for the confusion! They both work but will give different results. With the tip of the whistle under the water like the drawing, you will get a bird like warbling sound. Tip above the water and moving the whistle around will give you a slide whistle sound. When I make them I will three or four at a time so it is fun to have a variety of characters and sounds. Good luck!
YESSIR!!! after easily 2+ hours wasted listening to fruitcakes yammer about either european weather or cartoon references, i come across this glorious 6 minute video of pure information. Majorly appreciate this concise and demonstrative video, king!
@@zhernandoz43 My man! This comment made me laugh, and made my day! Thank YOU!
How much water do you add ?
@@amandabaird7737 I just add water and blow into the whistle. If there is too much it will get blown out.
I really enjoy watching your videos. I love this whistle!!!! I could watch you make water whistles all day. LOL! I'd love to see you work on others.

Thank you thank you for the encouragement! It means a lot. I have a video coming soon I am working on the edit now.
Love that teapot. I'm waiting for some roofing felt to arrive, to make templates out of. Nice work.
Thank you very much and. Good luck!
Do you sell these templates?
@@bethreynolds212 no I do not sell them I took a paper cup from a Starbucks and cut out the bottom, then cut the seam and flattened it out. Then I traced the flatten cup onto tar paper.
Great instruction and great camera set up, thank you

Beautifully explained! Can’t wait to try your ‘countdowns’! Like the word ‘stagger’ too!? Paints a great picture of what needs to be done! Thanks.
Thank you!
This video is so helpful, thank you! Quick question, are you pulling with your hands positioned around 5 o’clock?
Yes, I am around 5o clock on my pulls.
That is good trick I’m gonna try 3,10,3,3. And thanks for showing my what I think I’m doing wrong
Right on, Heidi! Good luck!
6 years gives me hope!
I heard a great quote, “people over estimate what they can do in one year, and underestimate what they can do in 10.” I try to remember that when learning new skills!
Спасибо! Потрясающая видео ❤
Can the hole in the top of the head be made through the beak of the bird instead?
Yes. Just as long as the hole is above the surface of the water.
That would be good design too!
It took me 4 tryes to make these types of water whistles just from seeing one in Peru. Now I can really offer this option to my students. My problem was with the blow tube and sound hole; needed they little pice of rice to push the air up and out under the sound hole. And using the wire is to cut the angle is better then a razor blade. Thanks!
Awesome so glad to help!
This is really helpful. The wave analogy especially, as I’ve been pulling off clay while pulling up. Thank you!!
Right on, and thanks for the feedback! Happy potting!
Thanks for this lesson. Never knew how I got the rings of clay. I'm trying to pull taller and this should help.
Awesome! Let me know if this helps!
That was great information. Can't wait to try it. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Can you show how to recenter clay that’s been pulled? I struggle with the top of my clay wobbling and don’t always want to cut it with a needle tool.
Ah yes. I will make some new videos about this specifically! I was going to do this latter but I can do this sooner. Thanks for the suggestion, it really helps the content generation and the community.
I am also struggling with this and it's so frustrating!! When I go to trim I can't really center bc the piece wasn't centered when I was pulling!
@@emeliad522 I will make my next video on this, stay tuned!
Well I just watched your video and I was seeing how the one was clogged so I decide to attach my mouth piece to one half of the pinch pot before I attached them together. Then I attached the 2 half’s and tweaked the sound thanks for another amazing video. Now to conquer the water whistle. I made one but not sure if it’ll sound when I add water. There’s a tiny bit of sound but nothing noticeabl
Wonderful work thank you
You're awesome!!! I just subscribed. I really dig your vibe and what you share, thank you.
I imagine you add the water through the whistle part ? Or through the top hole ? Can you give an idea how much water is required ?
Yes add water through either opening (after firing) and any extra water usually shoots out. I find that the water whistles are pretty self adjusting.
You should do more videos from this filming perspective if possible. You can see way better what you are explaining- thanks a lot !
The content we NEED! Can’t wait to try this out on Friday! 🙌🏽
You got this!
Older than you think they are called Wablers and were made all over Europe and parts of Russia. Can still find videos on making them, but most are not in English and hard to find anymore. Well done and nice to see this video.
Right on, good to know, and thank you!
Love that bowl. How much clay did you start with for that bowl? The rim looks nice too, solid and proportioned.
I think about 2 lbs of clay. Thank you!
This whistles were made and used by Indians in ancient times.
Cool!
Of course
thanks
Welcome
Can you explain the angle for the rib again?
The rib should be angled with the direction of the clay, not perpendicular and not a shaving angle, a shaping angle.
One of the best cylinder explanations
Glad you think so! Thank you!
I would love to see the final product to see what burnishing when green did to the surface of the bowl.
I think this piece I slipped and glazed, but I will try and add finished work in future videos!
Just found your videos. Great explanations. Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Super helpful. Thanks!
Thank you very much!
very good thank you man
Right on thank you!,
Thank you sooo much! And thanks to your students for letting youperform surgery on their ocarinas! Your explanations were easy to follow and I am going to have fun fixing my ocarinas this weekend!
You are so welcome! Have fun and good luck!
Can you please tell my what type of clay do you use? I am having trouble finding a good quality clay online.
The clay is a cone ten stoneware called bravo buff from clay planet in Santa Clara California. Any clay with good plasticity should be able to roll into a thin tube. Good luck.
thank you so much!@@povpottery3648
