Okay, my last point is of the 'Multimodality' mentioned later. The point is thus that they MUST be coinciding speech AND gesture that aids the evolution of humans. It is like the Rosetta stone which enables us to translate ancient languages. You need at least TWO different media flexible enough to denote a THIRD factor, something in nature itself, to confirm the symbol of one or the other to that object (or act). Having multiple means to confirm makes what is communicated able to be passed on with better success and complexity through time and space.

What means of expression? Both gesture (body language) AND sound collectively make humans more distinctive. Other animals can mimic sound to some degree. But our flexible fingers are also significant to make the sounds we use amplify the value of language because it enables us to 'denote' the referents that we intend our vocal symbols to mean. In contrast, a mimicking bird requires 'hoping' that the other birds or animals infer the sound to map directly without as variable capacity to demonstrate what the symbols refer to. We can, for instance, pick up a rock and say 'rock' in hopes that this denotation can connect the listener to associate the two. Our degree of this capacity is greater because we can do more complex demonstrations with the use of our hands compared with other animals. Other animals can do this too, but only with less variation as they are limited in scope for the initial denotation.

For example, we will discuss the tense-aspect system, which does not include specific morphemes for tense. Rather, morphemes of 'distance in time' are combined with aspectual morphemes. In the noun phrase, we find 15 locative demonstratives which are used as adverbials of space and time. An interesting topic for further research - and discussion during this talk - is how this relates to spatial cognition. The thesis is the first description of this threatened Bantu language.
