How I won Gold at a Jiu Jitsu Submission Only Tournament | Round 1 Breakdown
This is how I won gold at the Good Fight Submission Only Jiu Jitsu tournament this past November! I'll be breaking down both of my matches and give insights on my strategies and techniques I used to grab that first gold medal as a blue belt.
There were no points, no advantages, just an 8 minute round, no heel hooks, and if no one is submitted within 8 minutes, overtime alternates between 3 positions. The back, arm bar, and a fully locked triangle. Overtime goes on for eternity until one person cannot submit the other, after being submitted.

Blue Belt Promotion DISASTER - How I Injured My Knee Celebrating
Переглядів 175Рік тому
This is how I injured my knee celebrating at my Blue Belt Promotion Ceremony! As mentioned in the title, I finally got my blue belt! I've never been one to care much about belts in Jiu Jitsu, because where I trained previously, it wasn't a traditional gym, so you were either good or you weren't. To actually SEE a colored belt around my waist, it truly was an overwhelming feeling. It's like you ...

Attacking from Side Control like Gordon Ryan | Systematically Attacking from Top Pins

I talk about a core submission chain Gordon Ryan shows in his "Systematically Attacking From Top Pins Side Control/North South instructional. Believe me, when I tell you this chain has a high success rate, I can vouch first hand! It's all centered around a very popular submission; the kimura. If the kimura fails, you usually have the side triangle. If the side triangle isn't open, you can go fo...

      Thank you so much! I would highly recommend John Danaher’s pin escapes instructional. I’m sure his submission escape series is phenomenal as well. Garry Tonon’s breaking legs and breaking hearts, Gordon’s back attack instructional, his seated open guard instructional was spectacular. Marcelo Garcia’s guard passing instructional is another great one to consider also. He’s got a guard passing chain that I’ve been using for years and it connects really well with various other passes, back takes and submissions.

    Why would you work so hard to deny him a half guard pass, if its Submition only? He doesn't know but your legs were very exposed to locks playing hard Half guard.

    • @StrongBroBJJ
      @StrongBroBJJ 10 місяців тому

      Very true about my legs being exposed! Even tho heel hooks weren’t legal, he could’ve fell back on a straight ankle if he wanted to just like his team mate did in my second match, but I’m very familiar with that game since I roll with those types of players all of the time. If you have a low knee shield with locked feet, they can forget about falling back on the legs. Even tho there were no points, it’s never good to freely let someone pass your guard outside of training. The likeliness of me subbing him from bottom side control is very slim. I played my A game; play guard, take the back and strangle.

    MONDAY JUNE 27TH 2022. 0322Hrs Ironically, our BJJ class just had a grading this Saturday June 25th 2022 where our professor's professor was conducting the seminar portion. We were doing mount Escapes just like your father was doing while you were attacking from the top pin. My Professor's Professor (Marco Costa) said to keep your head on the ground and NEVER give up head control (your father who is fighting to escape the mount) to your attacking opponent (that would be you.) He stated that he would rather accept the pass than give up head control.

    • @StrongBroBJJ
      @StrongBroBJJ 2 роки тому

      Head control really is everything when it comes to establishing a dominant pin. Even in side control, the top head and arm is one of the most dominant forms of a side control pin because it gives you complete control of their head and shoulders. Similarly for mount, if I, the top player, can manipulate the spine by controlling his head, it makes it nearly impossible to knee elbow escape and bridge to the opposing side. And he can nearly forget about escaping if his arm is also isolated above his head. During the last three months of solely focusing on escapes, that has been my biggest success getting out of bad situations, denying my partner of head control.

      I have gotten the privilege to watch both of their back attack instructionals. While I think they were VERY similar, there were some minor differences. One of the best parts about Gordon’s instructionals is the fact that he does positional rounds at the end, showing the moves and concepts he taught during live scenarios. I would love to get John’s mount or side control instructional and compare the two.

      John teaches to the average layman so you can really understand. Gordon just goes right into super super specific scenarios and theres like 20mins for each super specific position with the opponent. in my opinion gordons instructionals are too hard to fully digest and internalize for basically everyone including blackbelts. gordons instrucitonals are just stupid, hes not normal mentally, he has an insane memory and both john and gary talk about this. In my opinion unless you are a fully time bjj pro or have an IQ of 120 plus, go with john first and use gordons for trouble shooting specific situations you are stumped on that john doesnt go over, granted you can find them within the complexity of his videos

    ua-cam.com/video/q_Uc36A2vwM/v-deo.html The one I’m talking about is the one after the first option that he is showing. This first kimura option on this short video was a little overly complicated for me 2 years ago. The last one watch his knee and hip movements. It turns this 5-7 inches of shoulder play to like 1/2-1 inch of shoulder play. It’s nightmarishly tight.

  • @ConveyApp
    @ConveyApp 2 роки тому

    What’s your rank? Anyways I recommend checking out Chris Brennan’s kimura series. I was fortunate to train with him at a workshop. It cleaned up my kimura submissions. Example: from side control, instead of stepping over the head with the foot, keep your hip horizontal to the mat, and kind of drag it on that plain, no hip switching, and place the inside of your knee on the head. So position yourself with low hips, the inside of the knee on the head, your body being at roughly a 45 degree angle. Then lift the shoulder. This got my kimura submissions from a 20 percent probably to a 60 percent probably like in 2 week of getting familiar with the position. Then my americanas submissions jumped because of people wildly defending the kimura. It’s almost opposite from how I originally learned it. Unfortunately people learned the defense pretty quickly and well. kimuras are hard to get on our guys now. So kimura faint is a good north south choke position submission.

    • @StrongBroBJJ
      @StrongBroBJJ 2 роки тому

      That is awesome dude! Really good insight on the Kimura finishing mechanics. I can definitely vouch that the kimura is a great way to set up the north south choke! Their hands are busy trying to defend the kimura but it leaves their neck exposed. If used as a submission alone, sure it's a strong man move, but it opens up so many other opportunities like falling to a T kimura into back takes, transitions to arm bars and side triangles (such as this one in the video), it's a great position all around. I will definitely play around with Chris Brennan's finishing mechanics and see how much of a difference it makes.

      Thanks Mike! It really is the bread and butter of the instructional. It seems like majority of the attacks branched off this one chain and could be set up in multiple different ways, such as the step over far side arm bar that I’ve done for years. I never thought of using a kimura grip first to stabilize the position before switching to a 3/4 Juji, or going back to this same attack sequence from there.
