Building The Moon House
United States
Приєднався 26 вер 2022
This channel covers the long-term build of my EPIC, beautiful off-grid modern dream house on 22 acres of bare mountainside land.
It's an absolutely stunning view property high above the clouds in Morgan Hill, California that I've named "Casaluna": The Moon House.
It's a special place that's just crying out for a very special house; unique architecture that takes maximum advantage of sweeping views as well as the seasons and prevailing winds for heating and cooling.
We'll be off grid completely, and that means the very latest technology in solar and wind power generation, cloud and rainwater collection, septic systems, well drilling.
And we'll do it all using ultra-modern construction of all types, including working with unique applications for concrete, glass, and wood.
I've never built a house from scratch before... but what could possibly go wrong?

Ep. 16 - Drilling Scared Part 3: Pushed To The Limit
Day 3 on the job site, and the challenges just keep piling up. We’ve been pushing hard to get this well finished, but nothing about this process is going as planned. Will this be the day we finally make it, or are we in for another round of setbacks?

Scary indeed! But well told
These guys have no idea what they are doing
@@Joe-o3n7b Uhh... absolutely wrong. But I appreciate you watching!
Maravilloso 🙌 todo lo mejor para ustedes
Good videos, but they need to be longer. At least a half hour or an hour long .
Blessings from the Heavens & our Maker who put the people here to provide the skills and the water to provide for you and your CasaLuna 🙏
Wooooo! Thank you for watching and sharing this, Staci!
No clue how I stumbled upon your channel but I’m hooked now. My well is 268 ft but I didn’t have the pain of starting scratch like you. 🍻
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying!! 268 is pretty manageable. You had a house eon the property already tho? Lucky 😅 scratch is hard! But soooo interesting and fun
Well, congrats for the drilling success and for making a 30-minute video on drilling interesting!! That alone is no mean feat, my friend! :) With that drama and soundtrack, it had a Tolkien vibe to it. Fantastic video and SO happy for you!!!
Wow, what a compliment! Thank you!! Tolkien movies... My ultimate film heroes

YOU WILL GET GROUND WATER BUT YOU ARE GOIGN TO PAY FOR IT WOW.... AND YOU ARE SO HIGH UP FROM THE VALLEY ..
Pay for it?
DRILLING ON TOP OF A HILL WHAT DO YOU THINK WOW DRILL IN VALLEY.... BETTER CHANCE ...
You should watch Episode 14. The explanation is in there
Wow, you didn't determine the presence of water before making capital investments in the property? Oh well... Thats the difference between reality and reality TV.
@@jeffbrooke4892 how does one make a determination of water presence BEFORE buying the property? "Excuse me, I know I know this is your land and I may or may not buy it... But can I bring TONS of heavy equipment and drill a hole to just check and see if there's water down there before I decide?"
Pretty dramatic videos. I enjoy the videos , processes etc. They hit on my two careers 1) Carpenter and Superintendent on Homes in the 10s of millions up in Vancouver. The 2nd Driller, mostly exploration rigs, but owned RC drill rigs. The drill crew you have seemed to be man heavy, and I take it the convoy etc. Was for dramatic effect.. as I was able to drill to drill to 500' with self contained RC with downhole hammer , usually rig either track mount or truck mount , 1 service truck with rod, fuel and 500 gal if needed water, plus often last week's uneaten lunches.. 250-500 per shift (12hrs) driller and helper, helper might be ours or the assistant to the on job Geologist that was logging chips ..if we were doing exploration work .. Deep overburden we always used the skirted tri-cones built by drill systems in BC before changing to hammer. Seldom did we bring out the tanker or additional air compressor ..
@@doonhamer252 Thanks for that... Very interesting! Yeah, everything here in California is different than anywhere else in the world, I'm afraid. The regulations are stifling. Did you get a chance to watch the full videos? Episodes 14 and 15?
@@moonhousemh Should have also said that I have been retired-ish from both industries for over a decade.. only coordinate or price work as a PM .Mining and drilling just a sleeping partner in a Placer Operation... Want to talk about Regs and shifting goalposts .LoL But yes worked in NM and NV decades ago , different rules required an on site consultant to navigate ..
Just had a 145' deep well drilled in upstate NY last week for a total cost of $7,262.00 with the first 80' needing casing . No pump, just the well. I know the feeling you get when waiting to hit water and the relief when they hit it. I don't even want to take a guess at what you paid for that well.
@@helpallofem4428 California prices are INSANE! You are so lucky! ❤️ And yes, it's a lot of anxiety... I love your story!
Well drilling is an interesting and enjoyable topic and pursuit. But make no mistake, the earth is not anyone or anything's "mother". The earth just is, as the Lord made it, and it is temporary and will be replaced. It has no consciousness and niether gives nor takes anything. You get what you find and the earth has nothing to "say" about it.
Agree. Same as mountain climbing. They have no will, good or bad.
The Drama and intrigue had me on the edge of my seat
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Really! Drill from a hill top! That is not drama...

but why starting drilling on a hill top. and not in the Valley where water goes to
Thank you for watching! The answer to your question is in the video starting at 7:26 :-) Cheers!

Seems your drilling company drilled into your wallet! Should have done your research… Used casing? Sketch! But congrats on hitting water
@@kehenabeach4418 it's not used casing. It's new. Those clips of the casing on the trailer and I'm running viewers through what they are... where you see dirt on them... were shot after the events of the end of Episode 15 where they had to remove it from the hole because of bore collapses. I used those clips out of sequence in the film. They are absolutely 100 % new and unused.
@@moonhousemh My bad! The video leads one to presume (my eyes witness one thing). My experience with well drilling $100 and up a foot! Congratulations truly on hitting water! Have you looked into Primary Water Technologies LLC? Managed to find us an amazing source of water! Damn near blew the pipe out when we hit water!
I already have a well with water... why would I need them? Do they do other things besides well-drilling?
@@moonhousemh it’s worth it to at least get them to survey the land. I imagine your plan for the vineyard and the fact it’s in Fire country it would behoove you to at least know where large quantities of available water you could access if you’re truly going to”Off grid”. Just a suggestion, but again congratulations on getting one step closer to your family’s dream. Mahalo!
@@kehenabeach4418 How do they survey the land?
That drilling outfit should be ashamed of themselves for giving you used well casing

I subscribed and I wish you well, I hope you succeed. I tried to get approval for building in your same county, after many year(S) of trying I gave up and sold the property. I had a well on the property when I started and I also obtained a septic permit (which is basically a stamped drawing with a red stamp). Getting the building permit was a different story. My wells were good and not contaminated, and I think you are far enough north that your water source will not be affected by the chemical contamination, if I remember the contamination moved east but then went south. I really hope you make it to the end, I think your view will be great once they fix the dam and can refill the lake. I think your in for a surprise because you need a build site approval (BSA), then the county makes all kinds of stupid demands and infrastructure requests. ( BSA took more than a year because the reviewer kept going on month long vacations) Oh I worked with the architect and would resubmit in a couple days, but I would get no response and then be told he was on vacation. Oh, and forget about the supervisors they just tell you to wait because they have no clue what their people doing on projects in process. When the infrastructure demands the county made were more than I paid for the land, It was time for me to sell. I sold and didn't look back. I really am looking forward to seeing how it goes for you. Before you get permits your going to have to pay school fees, fire fees, check for riparian info, do environmental impact etc, etc, etc. Fire infrastructure must be in before construction starts so construction doesn't start a grass fire. You are in for an interesting ride but I will be rooting for you. Also, if you want 3D drawings, just get home designer pro 3D, It's the low cost version of Chief architect and you can whip out a 3d rending in about 3 hours, my architect sent me drawings and I was able to render and do a walk through in about 2 hours, of course the house I was trying to build for multiple years was less than 2000 sq feet and the house was on flat land. Good Luck! It will be interesting to watch. -MG
Thanks for subscribing and watching! Two questions... 1. About what years were you working on your project? 2. What area was your property in? Cheers, and thank you for the thoughtful note!
@@moonhousemh 1) 6 plus years ( I just sold this year, or I gave up this year which ever you prefer). 2) SCC west side of 101 on the wine trail closer to Gilroy but not in the city. Take a look at your bridge crossing make sure it can take the concrete truck. (80,000 lb +) Some of the cross roads in the area restrict trucks to 10 tons. When I say good luck I really mean it, I hope you get your house built. The engineering is going to be something, your going to have to deal with the amplification of the hillside on the seismic loads. I built another home in San Jose about 25 years ago (Also on a hill). That process was a walk in the park relative to the county. When I started, I was speaking with contractors I told them where I was and that it was in the county. The most benign comment was Oh My God they're the worst! It got much more colorful from there. The BSA is the step taken with the planning department, don't let them place getting a permit off site as a contingency to getting a permit to build. It's illegal but they do it anyways because it cost so much to fight it in court. There are actually court cases in California where the municipality has been held liable. But again they expect you to just give in. I decided I didn't need the stress. They tend to send the BSA in an editable format or at least they did for me. When they do EDIT it so it removes crap like "obtain a permit" to something like " submit paperwork for a permit" . I actually got the drawing for the house approved and they the county created another development that had to also get approved. Yes my plans were approved but they started another one right before that approval happened and they would issue permits until I had this other development also approved. Sorry ranting here.. Oh a word of advice never sign a contract with a contractor that has material delivery as a pay point, because they will deliver all the material up front and expect payment based on the schedule. This puts them way ahead and they can play scheduling games. The best points are listed a complete install for payment. I am curious about your grading for the first design, I bet that was a huge cost, the protection needed for the rock bombs as they roll down the hill is something, I had the same issue on the hill side in San Jose. -MG
How big was your house design? Square footage, I mean
@@moonhousemh Less than 1700 square feet well below the 2000 square feet that requires a grading permit, oh it was on several acres of flat land. -MG
Mabey don't drill at the top of a mountain it will always be disappointing 😂😂
