Usually a PRS guitar can make you sound good. In the case of Opeth however, they make a PRS sound incredible.

Situation as follows: Mr Ackerfeld one day just states that growling is no longer on the menu. You loved the growls, really. But you are a fan. A real fan. So you just went with it. I mean the albums without growls were not bad after all. He's a nice person too. Over the years you went to some concerts, listened to some albums, maybe even forgot about the old ones a bit. You long forgot about the growls and the pure, earthy, gutty feeling they caused inside your stomach. You live your life. Get promoted at work. Have a kid or two maybe. One day your friend hits you up. "Hey Opeth live, I'll get tickets, you in?" YOU IN! There you stand. Sorceress intro hits you like a train that won't stop. you enjoy. Nice vocals also. Outro also epic. Then they mess around. Weird sounds, not really a song. you hear the BELL. You remember the bell from somewhere. This bell triggers feelings in you. What are those feelings, those memories? He can't play that song, how will he sing it? Those 8 seconds, they must have been so tense full. What happened next might have destroyed you. GHOST OF

MUCH more love and respect needs to be given to Richard Barbieri…He is one of the seminal synth pioneers, through his work with Japan (and everything related that followed) and 46 years later he's still innovating and a key member of one of the greatest bands in the World. 😔

Deadwing was my entry point to the world of Steven Wilson and PT. It is still my favorite thing the band did. Thanks to my friend Eric who opened the door in 2007!

Wow! I watched the In Absentia Documentary on this same channel, and now Deadwing, are they releasing a Fear of a blank planet one? With that they will encompass the TRILOGY OF THEIR BEST THREE ABUMS.

For me it's very surprsing that they are talking about that there was so small amount of people on shows in America. In Poland every time when i was on show - buildings were bursting at the seams. From present perspective it's kinda suck that mastermind like Steven had struggle to earn good money.

Life is mostly suffering. In the past music played such a huge role for some as a way to channel that pain. Listeners found common ground with those artists and the songs when it hit home. Music was the best nostalgic time capsule for our emotional journeys. Sound of Muzak was very profound and I believe the tension, depression, and division today is tied to the lack of deeper meaning in mainstream music and culture. Steve may be correct that there are no more riffs or combinations to be played on the guitar, Regardless I truly believe that more of the younger generation needs to embrace creating music as an outlet for their pain, insecurity, uncertainty and hope for a brighter future. To unplug from their smartphone and stop watching others live lives and finally start living one of their own.

Yes Steven I do believe your music will be immortal and not surprisingly crossed generations. I'm 54 now and started listening after hearing Absentia when it came out. First song I ever heard was Blackest Eyes. Around 2015 I was playing Deadwing in our work vehicle and a new guy had just started that day who is about 20 years younger than I. As soon as it started to play his eyes lit up and he looked at me and excitingly yelled, "You know Porcupine Tree"? Come to find out his father who is a Doctor who takes care of the elderly is a huge fan of PT and turned his son onto them. So ya, I think that you definitely have an accessible sound for the masses but in my opinion I think your biggest fans are audiophiles and practicing musicians that can really appreciate the talent on that stage. Myself being a drummer, Gavin of course is a masterclass and seriously lifted PT to another level.

I'm surprised by their own perception of Deadwing. I feel like it has aged the best out of all their albums and seems to be their most popular album on Spotify.

Colin I concur with one of your favorites. There were more times than not when that solo from The Start of something Beautiful would be coming up. I would pull the car over, crank it up and just close my eyes. So tasteful and full of emotion.

  • @treebrother

How I wish the world would have been ready for PT. Listening to the live shows with Steve, Colin, Gavin, Richard, and John never gets old and still gives me goosebumps today. It was such a magical communion of such artful talent. Like some of the 80's classics that did good but really took off decades later. I believe that Porcupine Tree's fan base will only continue to grow. I feel fortunate to be able to attend the Fear of a Blank Planet tour at a very small intimate venue in my home state. Spent the entire show leaning against the House Sound Booth. Hopefully someday we can all get to enjoy a reunion tour for all the Greatest Hits.

There are some albums and bands that have such an impact on you that you wish you could relive the moment you heard them for the first time just so you can be overwhelmed by that amazing feeling again. This is that band and album for me.

I had never heard of Porcupine Tree until in 2019 or 2020 when I was watching a UA-cam video about home audio. The UA-camr was testing a set of speakers and In Absentia was one of the records he used. I downloaded it and was blown away, so I downloaded more and was blown away. I thought Porcupine Tree was some new band, I bought all the records I could find. None of the radio stations in my area played any of their music. If it wasn’t for getting back into home audio and watching videos I never would have heard of the band.

What the fuck?! This mix is insane. I’ve seen every live performance of TCV/QOTSA/FF/LZ on UA-cam and the sound in this one is as good as seeing it live!! Thank god for fucking recording technology and the talented mofos who produce it to the way it is. What a time to be alive!! Also reconciling with the fact that I may never be able to see TCV live 😢 at least we all have this. Though in recent videos Josh and Dave are talking about a possible reunion?!?! We would all just die if it happens Hailing from tiny Malaysia🇲🇾 in Southeast Asia
