This week I talk about the 4 core skills for winging, and how spending time on cleanliness of execution, improving the range of conditions and directions you can do them in will pay big dividends further down the line. I fully confess to not being brilliant at these myself in some situations, and its something I'm committing to improving personally.

Wingfoil Quick Tip #17 - Effective Foil Pumping
Переглядів 563Місяць тому
I've been working a lot on my foil pumping recently, and had what i think may be a bit of a break through; going from only minimising my rate of deceleration to actually generating/maintaining speed! Foil used: AK 880 Plasma V2

    I just switched from a 120 to 78l board yesterday, steadying until you are kneeling holding the wing is tough, but as soon as you have the wing overhead with some wind, its easy to get to feet. I was surprised how quickly a smaller board pumps onto foil compared to the bigger board, two pumps and up. Larry

    Good discussion about board volume, im trying to choose between two used boards one is 78L and one is 70L, im 70 KG, but i dont want to be sinking trying to get up, and i dont want to pump my brains out to get on foil. Wind solves everything, strong wind makes it all easier. But i wing in variable conditions so, after watching your video im thinking the 78 L board. Thanks Larry

      Hi. You're right that that tiny bit more volume will help, even if just to offset the weight of the board itself. You may find both boards a little tricky when the wind is lighter/there's significant chop

    hi I have a 130l board jp with matched foil from np; with this setup I was right in the balance; when I go down swapping to an inflatable board 103l seems to not having the right front pressure; if I advance the mast the board became unpleasant in the takeoff; also the top speed is not good 10knots with a 1900 front, while in jp I can reach 12 knots; should I have to play with shimming the stab? increasing or reducing drag? thanks

    • @PeteJonesF6
      @PeteJonesF6 2 місяці тому

      Hmm, a change of board shouldn't really lose you speed, unless you're feeling uncomfortable and cant push it as hard. Shifting the mast in the track will alter the balance of pre-flight vs. post-flight balance, and shimming the stab will affect (mostly) post-flight. It would be worth checking that both boards fly with the mast at 90 degrees, some manufacturers haven't in the past. If you point the stab downward in the water more it will create more front foot pressure, if you flatten it, it will create less.

      @PeteJonesF6 2 місяці тому

      Hey Chris, I looked it up and the 1100 is 12.5mm thick, I think the span is the main contributor to all the lift/efficiency TBH.

    • @christomo
      @christomo 2 місяці тому

      @@PeteJonesF6 definitely plenty of glide at aspect 11, however its thinner than i thought it might be , It will be interesting how slow you can go before you stall i look forward to seeing the new Plasma in the flesh such a clean system from AK , I love the taped fittings and quality , I find it interesting the different companies playing with the aspect and surface area ,and volume of foils to give the different qualities in the foils and different feelings . I love looking at the volume for low end lift at slow stall speeds but also i know it creates some drag in top end loss of glide . However Im no expert and just try to understand it from using brands kit and the feelings it gives you when trying different foils of the same aspects and with different volumes . Great first review i look forward to more ,The Plasma is not to far away from my new foil (in the post )so im hopeful that i get the same kind of performance my vid to follow . span 1080cm x11.50cm2 x 10.1 aspect bit thicker at 14mm have an awesome week and i wish you good winds

    I’ve just bought one after a demo session. Upgrade from F-One Phantom 1280 FCT. Great reviews and a fair price (for a really well engineered carbon setup) got me interested. Two sessions so far - one in waves, one flat. Delighted with my purchase. Finally understand the importance of glide. It goes 2.5 knots faster than the phantom, but more importantly made it so much easier to carry speed when flagged out on a fat wave at Hayling and I didn’t even notice that I was doing tip breaches into tacks. (Didn’t even know I could). Highly recommended for anyone that has learnt to gybe and tack. Well done AK - this is a serious challenge to the big name foil brands.

    Good topic and explanation but missing 2 factors: 1. the upward lift that the wing generates helps remove some of the rider weight. 2. the increased buoyancy of sea water also would amount to ~2L of volume for an 80L board. I'm 77kg and find on my 80L that i can float feet dry even in very light breeze on lakes, and of course more so on the sea, making it the sweet spot for a 1 board quiver.

    Found your content good . I am still new to wing foiling and use Armstrong kit with no shim on stab that gives max lift , have just bought a 70 fuse to help pitch stability but find even small movements it feels very loose . The stab is 232 with a ma foil any ideas on set up or me to calm things down .

    • @PeteJonesF6
      @PeteJonesF6 5 місяців тому

      Longer fuse, bigger stab or even a longer board may help. I'm not super familiar with the Armstrong kit, but it probably just takes practice. You could also try narrowing your foot stance so that your movements are less consequential. Hope this helps

    Nice vid Pete. I am about 88kg. I need 18kts+ to sink start my 39L. Knee starting is easier, but I would prefer to sink it. I can only get going if I can get the board to the surface. I was thinking 45L at my weight for prone (mid length) and wing to see if I can going in 15 kts. You think I could sink the 45? My daily driver is a 60L but I can’t sink it easily- too much instability at just below the surface.. thoughts?

    • @PeteJonesF6
      @PeteJonesF6 5 місяців тому

      I used to have a 65L and I found that a super nice board all round, never really had any corkiness problems with it even at my weight of 82kg. I think my technique must be different though. I try to avoid sink starting the board, it's just a waste of effort
