Roman Chariot Race
“The chariot race originated at Gilwell in the early days of Leader Training and for many years was used on every Scout Wood Badge Course as a classic demonstration of B.P.’s method in action:
the Patrol as the unit of activity
the immediate application of newly acquired skills (Square Lashing, Diagonal Lashing)
the construction of a basic unit in mainline pioneering (the trestle)
light-hearted competition between Patrols”

Climbing and rappelling are among the most exciting activities a Scout can do. Troop Meeting Agenda: Leader's Minute
Переглядів 1138 років тому
The Leader’s Minute (often referred to as the “Scoutmaster’s Minute”) is frequently presented after some closing announcements and before a brief closing ceremony. In a well-run unit, this might be the only time the Scoutmaster or another adult leader addresses the troop during the meeting. It’s an occasion that leaves the Scouts with something of value to think about-something they can reflect...

From another direction, this time slot can af...

Troop Meeting Agenda: Skills Instruction

Much of Scouting is learning. Though, regularly the best learning takes place on occasions when Scouts are having fun and aren’t at all aware they’re learning anything, periods set aside for relevant instruction are a fundamental part of the regular troop meeting. The Skills Instruction portion of a troop meeting can target topics that are rank-related, merit badge-related, or readiness-related...

    I agree with eagledove, keeping the rope to inside and simply lashing loops is brilliant. No need to pull the entire length thru each time. Great job Larry!!!

    Great tutorial! You're awesome. Question: I'd heard rope should be wet before lashing. Do you agree? Any insight one way or the other? Thanks again!

    Keeping the long end of the rope to the inside - great. I just practiced lashing some stuff together, and I'm making a little table, for the first time, and my strings were all over the place, and I was dragging a big ball of string from one place to another. Keeping it on one side, and then just looping a bit of it, or I guess that might even be a 'bight,' that is very ergonomic.

    How are the double A-Frames erected? Obviously they can't be driven into the ground, and it seems to me that the 3-2-1 anchors are solely for the rope bridge. I'm beginning to think maybe the anchors help so bow my question is: would it be better to angle the double A-frames slightly and if so, which way? Also, I noticed that this revised monkey bridge is "less likely' to fail than the single A-frame style and I can't help but wonder why no one has thought up a few fail-safes.

    • @TroopLeader
      @TroopLeader 2 роки тому

      The strain created by the anchored hand and foot ropes provides enough downward tension to keep the A-frames erect.

    Did the scouts even check with the tribe to see if it’s okay to show the tribes legends like this in a play . It kinda seems like they are making fun of the tribe or mocking the tribe . All the Boy Scout stuff I see always seems like they steal from the indigenous ways and traditional way of life

    Great video! Thanks! Can you offer any suggestions on how to obtain spars? My troop just doesn't seem to have the time or wood to strip and convert to spars. I'd love to do more lashing projects, but this seems to be one of our biggest hurdles in doing so.

      Lose yeah! Just progressively toggle and pull. Another tip, if time allows, saw, chop or carve out wedge shapes in the support logs and place the cross logs in before binding.

      Another way to really tighten up this approach is to frap once or twice around all the wrappings! This solidly and securely tightens things up!

    I have a question about a square and a diagonal lashing. Comments are disabled on those videos so I came to this one. Hello. what is more secure a diagonal or a square lashing for tying say round or square pieces of wood to my cars roof bars. Thanks for any advice.

    • @TroopLeader
      @TroopLeader 7 років тому

      Always a square lashing, which provides more contact between the poles and the rope. Diagonal lashings are best suited for springing two poles together where they intersect and do not touch. (It has nothing to do with at what angle the poles intersect, and got its name because the wraps run diagonally to the spars, whereas with a square lashing, the wraps run at 90 degrees to the spars.)
