I have an old GMC mobility van for my wheelchair. It had a number of very ugly wood trim pieces on the dash and, since I didn't care what the old van looked like, I stripped off those wood trims and decided to burl them as is described in this video. It was my first time and I'd never tried before. I made some mistakes but, in the end, my dash and the cupholders, the door trims and radio surrounds came out looking absolutely fantastic! One of my friends saw my work and said, "Wow! I didn't know that Bentley made old vans." Now, I'm going to redo them as I think I can get them looking even nicer. These pieces are the perfect learning project. Thanx guy's for such a GREAT video!

I once worked on a Zuber wallpaper restoration in the guests wash closet. wall to wall! Owner had quite the sense of humor and taste.

I once looked into ordering Zuber, for a fine old Condo i lived in in Gothenburg. Where it would have fitted... It was a period when i lived over my assets, but i decided it was too expensive, and used Victorian handprints from Bradbury & Bradbury instead... Rougly half cost Vs Zuber, still not exactly cheap... I would absolutely not have been able to mount a distemper paper myself, or find anyone who could do it. I fully understand why they sealed the paper with polyurethane, but it is difficult to know how a regular commercial product like that ages... Or the darkening, was that just because it sort of saturated the surface, like when a matte surface, or a textile get wet? I suppose artist supply companies would have something you could put on, that does not darken or yellow, perhaps a sealer for aquarelles? I guess it would cost the same as the Zuber paper in those quantities? But if you belong to the class that can afford a Zuber, i guess you can afford a sealer... Perhaps a product like that could be put on before you mount the paper (without making it buckle or distort), to simplify the mounting? I.e. make it wipeable... Today there are companies which make modern print-on-demand scenic papers similat to Zuber, more reasonable for us common mortals... I guess, if you order samples from some various companies, you could find one with nice resolution & colours, even close up... Colour laser printer can also look really good.

This has brought joy to me as a painter/decorator....I loved graining and always practice on absolutely anything I could fined....I'm going to do this on a mould lion I done in cement....this will wood effect will look class on it.....cheers man for this👏🏼👏🏼☘️🎨

Would love to see a more detailed video of wood graining, especially something like mimicking oak hardwood flooring (in a darker, rich color like Danish Walnut [an older Sherwin-Williams stain color with nice depth and golden tone] - not the lighter pickled color or flat special walnut many people tend to use) -- i.e., products used, technique, etc. Again, beautiful job on your wood graining and stone! This is by far the best demonstration of creating a faux burl finish that I've seen, and I have been looking for a good one for a long time. I am a miniaturist, so I'm going to have to figure out how to reduce your techniques and tools for one-inch scale pieces, but it should be fun trying. Thanks!

I was wondering if and how to faux paint a burlwood finish that looks like a Restoration Hardware piece. This is a great video. I have two matching RH tall armoires that I would love to try this on. It might be too big of a project. Maybe there is a faux paint expert in San Diego. If anyone in SoCal knows of anyone let me know please.

@artisanrooms4701 when I applied the shellac it immediately started checking like tiny crystallize, cracks, or shattered glass. Do you know what I might’ve done wrong?

I am in love with this look and your fantastic instructional video! I am trying to refinish my grandfather's 1930-40s era dresser, which oddly enough has an original faux finish and I didn't realize until I completely stripped the drawers to bare wood. (It's very damaged so that was needed, anyway.) Which base coats, gel stain, and wiping stain did you use on the featured TV cabinet? (I think only the base coats were different colors.) That is EXACTLY what I want to do with the dresser, but since I am a growth-mindset individual with no natural talent in art... I just have to mimic what I like, with guidance from pros. :-D

This is exactly what I needed! I’m a theater scenic artist and while we use tinted water based sealers to achieve these faux finishes, the demonstration is perfect and exactly the same process.

Excellent work. I didn't know I had this talent until I was in my 40's. I was hanging wallpaper in Vegas at the Bellagio during its' construction and watched a "special finisher" doing marble. I took to it like a fish to water. I wound up doing all aspects of faux in a dozen casinos over the next 5 years from granite pillars at the Venetian, all of the cherry finish in the piano bar at the Paris and repairing damage to a zebra wood wall at the MGM Grand. You couldn't see where the natural grain stopped and my repair began, It wasn't work at that point! I was being paid to do art I would have done for free! Beautiful burl. I'm going to wow the neighbors with a burl wood panel on my front porch. Love your technique!

Very good! Historically, varnishes were meticulously done, usually using shellac or shellac and oil in French polishing for a very rich and certain appearance. I wonder what your finishes would look like if someone did French polishing or even a hand rubbed shellac finish over it. Maybe do a video of a sample where it's French polished.

I see I commented with a question 3 years ago -I did use your method here and took your advice on a durable top coat and everything worked out beautifully! Now I have another question I hope you can answer. I'd like to do this again but with a lighter burl color. To get the lighter end result, would I only need to change the base coat (as you recommend at beginning of video, a yellow/gold creamy color) OR would I also need to use a lighter gel and wiping stain? If so, do you have any recommendations for a lighter color of these stains? Thanks so much -best burl finish video on the entirety of the internet!
