    Oh! I didn't know we were counting coin capsules (I love Bullet solo!) and page sleeves, definitely those! Also, I thought about it, and Altoids cans are great for making a game portable. Right after school starts you can get tons of stuff on clearance that works for games. Similar to your lap tray, I used a shelf-paper-lined under-bed storage box for larger games. You can pause your game, move it out of the way, stack multiple of them and have different games running in each box. Your Marvel United hacks are INSPIRED! Great video, man!

    My favourite narrative heavy board game to date is The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle Earth. I’ve played through 3 full campaigns :) I’m currently playing through Trudvang Legends which leans even more heavily on the narrative, and I’m really enjoying it. I primarily play games with my mother, and she really loves a narrative heavy game, so I think that plays into my enjoyment of them quite significantly. When playing solo I tend to enjoy more of a mechanical puzzle, with little snatches of story. So I would summarise by saying that I’m pretty happy with the trend towards more narrative in games, but would be weary of it taking over too much, at which point you might as well be reading a book or playing an RPG.

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames 7 днів тому

      I can see how playing with someone who was really into the story would really enhance the experience. Despite the dramatic title, it feels to me like there's a good balance of games coming out. It was I think only ever really an issue in crowdfunding, anyway, as those big expensive games need to justify themselves as a big deep experience and use narrative to do it. In the past year I've moved away from crowdfunding, so I guess I don't know if my impression that the balance has really changed is right, but I know I have plenty to buy to suit my taste, so I'm happy, and wouldn't wish away anyone's narrative heavy game they're enjoying. When I play games with someone else, it's almost always with my mom, too!

    I have both Monster Hunter World: The Board Game and Primal: The Awakening, all-in pledge for both. Same sh1t, different story. MH just beat them to the punch in delivering quicker, AND launched and completed their next crowdfunding campaign already (Iceborne). -Primal is more affordable. -Less quality of minis. (Hollow, less details) -Higher quality of cards and artwork. More thoughtfulness in game design. - excellent rule book, albeit way bigger than it needs to be, a lot of redundancy -MHWTBG has more content but less variety in change of gameplay -Higher quality minis (not hollow, good weight, detailed super high resolution) Both have delicious combo-ing, “story” and lore, upgrade paths, on-the-fly decision making, deterministic combat mixed with a bit of luck. Both deserve space in my collection because I painted the minis and am a huge fan of Monster Hunter or its clones.

It never established a "wargame" feel for me. Yes, it does of course have the historical theme and it manifests it in many elements of gameplay but it never felt like a wargame to me. It's all way to steril and void of a perceivable human elements. I am not entirely sure how to precisely explain this notion. I had good and sometimes infuriated fun with it and then sold it off. Edit: Instead of Halls of Hegra, I would recommend a "Hill of Doves".

      I think the only game I've played that feels similar to Halls of Hegra is Pavlov's House, maybe superficially because of the tower defense and trying to send resources (it's been awhile). Thanks for the wargamer perspective, and the recommendation

    I’ve yet to see a review of this game that makes me regret my choice of going the MHW all in. I got mine a year earlier and I’ve not seen anything gameplay wise that is superior to MHW. Not saying it’s not a good game, just saying I’m not seeing the “superiority” of this game over MHW. I’m also all in on Icebourne as well.

    Great review, thank you! This game has been tickling my interest for a while now, but I'm neither a war gamer, nor do I avoid war games, I guess I'm somewhere in the middle? I'm usually more fascinated by historical or real world themes in games by default, although I'm not much into history. John Company, Pax Ren, Pax Em, Robinson, Nemo's War - these sort of games peak my interest just from a quick glance and Halls of Hegra falls straight into that category. Maybe I'm more excited by beige? I''m also not opposed to games that feel like you're being strangled and hit on the head with a brick underwater, so Robinson and Arkham Horror series are one of my most beloved games. I should give HoH a try at some point. Also, you reminded me I should give The Magnificent another try, as I was not in the euro mood when I played it the first time.

      Oh yeah, if you like a constant slide into misery along with a unique historical setting, this is absolutely a game for you. You know, with the Magnificent, I enjoy the aesthetic so much, and find the gameplay pleasant, but if someone didn't find it engaging, I wouldn't argue with them.

    The Kickstarter for this had a PnP option, which I opted for. A bit of a bigger project for a PnP that I usually do, but it turned out good. This game has a lot of decisions to make and I think of it as what I might play instead of Robinson Crusoe, which I find to be more punishing than this one. Furthermore, I think the theme for this spoke to me a lot more than most euros. An uncouth philistine such as myself just can't get into saving endangered species, medieval farming, or plotting trade routes in a third-world country. OveralI, a good game with a lot of choices to make but not as hard to navigate as most euros or wargames I have learned.

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames 2 місяці тому

      Maybe it's growing up in rural Kansas, but farming is the one regular Euro theme I find engaging. Otherwise, I am totally with you. How does mushrooms become a year-long obsession in the board game industry? It's so random. Or games that just have the name of a city. Definitely happy for people who enjoy it that there's plenty of choice, but please make more with a bit more intense themes. Man, you do real pnp. I will print some cards, make some tokens, but this would be beyond me. With the way prices are headed, though, I might have to up my skills.

    As a mini painter i am really happy that they did go for these awesome minis. Standees are always the worst option, especially for a game where the monster spins (is it looking in my or your direction again? I only see a thin line in the air) Spinning discs you can just print if you really want and sell the awesome minis. Not everything needs to be “you better keep up with the releases or you are out of luck” imo

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames 3 місяці тому

      I'm also happy they made the awesome minis. I'm seeing a lot of people mistaking what I'm saying. I like standee versions. I can of course print something that spins, but I've already bought the minis. I won't be able to afford to buy the minis in the future. The argument for making it a lifestyle game with constant content is 1. a lot of people like to have regular content for their game, and that doesn't impact you as an individual if the base set fulfills your needs, and 2. that's a way to make money for the company that goes beyond the kickstarters. Them offering things for other people doesn't detract from those who choose a different offering.

    • @Avaniar
      @Avaniar 2 місяці тому

      Saying miniatures are better than standees because with standees you don’t know where it is looking at is just ignoring Oathsworn… and here it would be sooooo easy to it has 4 sidings, obviously the thin parts are flanks and then you can both put a front and back print on the standee and just better specify it with a good base that specifies front and back. Standees give the possibility to increase market by reducing cost/price

    Fantastic observations, terrible channel name. Subscribed I think I agree with 99% of your impressions, you hit all the nails and thus I am very interested in seeing how you feel about games I do not own and I'm interested in buying. The one exception in which I disagree is tracking rounds. I too used to forget until I put a little note on the aid, tracking to 10 is important for some monsters, and also the more defensive heroes with low dmg output.

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames 3 місяці тому

      I thought about talking further about the round tracking, but knew the video would be very, very long. I think that if a person is prone to turtling, it's a good motivator. They decided instead of having large penalties when renewing the various decks, to have the round tracker to punish players who play too slowly. I appreciate that, but, I err on the side of overaggression, so don't need that prod. And I find it unfun to lose to the timer after playing for that long, so it stands as my house rule

      Pretty bad take. The movement in this game is huge and the game benefits from cutting out a large empty board. 1. I'm very slow, and 2. I think that it is possible to plan ahead somewhat during your turn, despite the dynamic nature of the game. Most co-op games play faster multiplayer for the same character count due to this.

    • @joshuag7027
      @joshuag7027 3 місяці тому

      @@JAlanRykerGames thats fair, you might be surprised how much players pre-plan then I remind them that they'll trigger a reaction, and then they have to completely rethink their strategy on the fly, I think people are used to planning out hands but because monsters react in the middle of the turn they aren't used to pivoting, they've got that marvel champions mindset then realize "ah I've got fire in my sector or crap the monster turned and now aI can't play attack cards" even with those moments where their whole strategy flies out the window, it still only takes us an hour per encounter, but I've also heard 3p is easier than playing with two characters because of the knockouts.

    • @JAlanRykerGames
      @JAlanRykerGames 3 місяці тому

      @@joshuag7027 I can definitely imagine with the way this game goes that a lot of time planning off-turn is wasted, which works for me, because if I tried to plan multiple characters ahead like in, say, gloomhaven, I'd actually make myself miserable. As it is, although I play very slowly (remember I said, "a minute, or 5 if you're me"), I find that to be one of the joys of solo gaming. There are limits, though!
