Why YOU should read Monk & Robot (Becky Chambers)
Переглядів 19812 годин тому
In which Ross and Laura (but mostly Ross) discuss why you should read two fantastic little books by Becky Chambers called the Monk & Robot duology. These two books (A Psalm for the Wild-Built and A Prayer for the Crown-Shy) imagine a future for humanity that lends a spark of hope to a genre which so often leans into darkness and dystopia. Often described as "hopepunk" and "cosy sci-fi", we expl...

Christopher Buehlman is one of the hottest names in fantasy right now, having recently released The Daughters’ War, a prequel to The Blacktongue Thief. This video is not about those books. This video is about the Medieval religious folk horror he wrote back in 2012 and that everyone forgot about. Let me tell you about Between Two Fires . . . We went to Glasgow Worldcon 2024 and it was amazing. Having had a great year of book festivals already, we thought we were ready to top it all off with Glasgow WorldCon 2024. Little did we know just how amazing and full on it would turn out to be. Did we manage to meet George R R Martin? Well, you'll just have to tune in to find out… (okay it's in the teaser, but try to act surprised.) Much lov...

Our Top Magic Systems (and how they work)
I can’t wrap my head around the whole Arabella thing - she can’t be dead, right? RIGHT??
Laura “he’s not stupid” Me aloud at work like you can hear me “everyone is stupid in this book”
Damned the gentleman! ARABELLA! The men in this book really treat the women like a second thought
Art imitating life
Ross is a massive nerd and I love him for it! I loved hearing his thoughts on exploring and imagining the world we want to create
I've read all of Becky Chambers' books except these ones. I'm going to read them in the next month and I'm really looking forward to it!
Becky Chambers is my favorite. All of her books. I don't know if I can pick a favorite of them. Probably Closed and Common Orbit or To Be Taught if Fortunate. Aw whatever, they are all my favorites. Though I thought Psalm was better than Prayer. One thing I love about Monk and Robot is the very real feeling religion of this world, how it feels like it touches the heart of religion and spirituality but does not pretend it to be different from how the universe works.
Ross is a massive nerd. And yes, the Joanne Harris interview was a banger.
Ross is a massive nerd! Book has been added to my TBR 😊
Yes... Ross IS a massive nerd, and I love it. Never really got into role-playing games like D&D much, but I always liked the concept. Guess I just didn't meet enough Ross's in my life to fuel the interest, though I do play a lot of RPG games on PC and that's always been my favorite genre.
It’s never too late to start!
Own it Ross!
ROSS IS A MASSIVE NERD.
Fine, I'll order them! 🙄 😁
Ross is a massive nerd and so am I! Also I loved A Psalm for the Wild-Built so I'm very excited to learn it has a sequel.
Everything in this video was so well put - I never tire of hearing people talk about how much they enjoyed these books. Eric: Ross is a massive nerd but also so am I and that online TTRPG discord sounds wonderful and must have been a fantastic way to spend time during lockdown.
I owe you "everything" for capturing this moment on camera! It (if it wasn't evident already by the way I am heaving in the video) means the world to me.
Those are some beautiful books!!
I think Clegg did eat the book, and that has given Vinculus innate magic powers
Strange is Hamilton and Norrell is Burr
I just imagined the York magicians all singing, "How do you solve a problem like Maria?"
Hahahahahaha I love this so much Cams!
5:52 I’m also surprised I haven’t gotten a mean comment lol
Omg congrats on a year!! 🎉
absolutely, without a doubt my favorite series (all 16 books of it) of all time. 100% agree with everything you shared. Each trilogy is fully realized with the same depth and complexity. I've read it several times and I return via audio once a year or so. definitely my refuge, as you spoke of, in difficult times. always love when Robin Hobb receives the praise she very much deserves.
I defo see the layers in the coward! I loved it entertaining with more than just a quest story for sure.
Thanks for having me on, it was a lot of fun.
Wow that last book just landed VERY HIGH on my TBR. Great interview. Do you have any recommendations for a good starting point for someone looking to read one of Stephen’s books? I haven’t read any yet. Was considering picking up the newest one.
The coward is good Charlie! His first two trilogies I believe are set same worlds/can link but otherwise I think it’s anywhere you wanna start
Hi Charlie, it depends what you are after. If you want epic fantasy with mages, battles, warriors and so on, I would start with Battlemage, the first book in the Age of Darkness trilogy. Those are more suited to new fantasy readers. It's the start of two connected trilogies. If you have been reading fantasy for a while, The Quest for Heroes duology, are two quest based fantasy stories, which on the surface are just adventure stories but are actually about a lot more. My latest ongoing trilogy, The Nightingale and the Falcon, is historic fantasy set in 13th century Persia, with battles, politics, warfare, conquest and secret societies. It's about a group of rebels fighting back against a huge Empire from the inside.
@@StephenAryan44they ALL sound great - the quest duology sounds like it’s right up my alley. Thanks!
Had to put a shift in to catch up! Feels like I am doing the prose a huge disservice in taking that approach. However, the effort is rewarded on the one hand with delightful turns of phrase again and again. Challenging as well, though, as more and more threads are brought together. I must not be tardy!
Stephen Black had a line along the lines of. "He was used to seeing gentlemen appear in the house uninvited. A whole room appearing was far less common." I love the wit in this book
It’s so clever isn’t it! Some genuine laugh out loud lines
I finished Chapter 22 today!
Vinculus. Vinculus. Vinculus. Such an excellent name. So too is Childermass. They're such fun words to say out loud. Simon Prebble must've had a ball!
So good! Vinc-u-lusss! Rolls off the tongue
I found myself wondering a lot in this section about the limits of magic. What can it do? What *cant* it do??
I (Laura) have read ahead a little bit and there’s some fab magic in the coming chapters! I’m really really intrigued by this magic system- Susanna hasn’t explained how it works at all, or what the constraints are
Thanks for uploading this exclusively for me

That Shirley Jackson cat is so judging us all
“She dies… she dies.”
😂
I try to tell myself that I don’t need pretty books but then you show me these beautiful things and I cry
That Something Wicked cover is wickedddd. Thanks for the tag!
Beautiful.
Ross is a poet but he didn't know it, but his feet show it. They're Longfellow's. Ba doom boom.
I would love to be in your discord
We don’t have our own, but we’re very active in @the_fools_tale discord! Come join the fun there :)
I loved this book too! Ready to start number two soon
I thought the chapter when Lady Wintertowne talked about how she hated the local magician as he was a trickster, and then when Norrell could help her she completely changed her story and said the local magician was very respected really showed her character. What a horrible 2 faced person
Absolutely agreed! Clarke has such a talent - she’s written a thoroughly hateable, but so masterfully I can’t even be mad about it
Laura being smarter than me and guessing the plot But I’m just here for the vibes
😂
Thanks so much for taking on the tag! I knew you would do an incredible job. Happy Reading! 😎📚👍
The most beautiful book I own is The Sword of Kaigen Wraithmarked edition that Ross will never get his hands on!
How have I not heard of your dinosaurs are wrong? Subbing now
I’m definitely enjoying this! Didn’t expect to like it as much since the audio wasn’t going in my brain
It's been quite a while since i read this and i barely remember it. About the hallucinating a person though, again i don't remember the circumstances, but there's a real psychological phenomenon where when someone is in an insanely dangerous and stressfull situation, their brain sometimes creates a whole person giving them advice and helping them through. It's called Third Person Syndrome
That’s a good point! Miller started this with Julie waaaay before it all kicked off though
11:50, my friend told me ages ago to be less positive because he watches scathing book reviews for fun. He said I should roast books, but that's not my thing, never has been. I do say what I don't like about a book, but I don't focus on the negatives just to get views, so i totally get your stance. I prefer to be balanced. When I love a book, I go all out and champion it.
Love the tainted cup, it's my only 5 star read of the year so far
Happy booktube anniversary 🥳. It's great having you in the community.
Thank you!! ❤️
