Morris Men dancing in womens underwear!!
Fantastic ludicrous mayhem! Now I understand whence the Bonzo Dog Band drew their inspiration.
It's rubbish. But at least it's British rubbish. Glorious.
But what about Bruce Lacey?! This feature writes him out of The Alberts’ show. As George Melly said in Revolt Into Style: <<Their rare theatrical performances - An Evening of British Rubbish had a respectable West End run - seemed to me one of the very few successful examples of native pop theatre. Sur- rounded by an insane clutter dominated by a penny-farthing bicycle they held a remarkable balance between chaos and order. They made no attempt to bully or seduce their audience but succeeded (on good nights) in drawing them in to share their obsessions. Miraculously they avoided the inherent whimsy which tends to attack this kind of eccentricity. Here there was no question that it was Professor Bruce Lacey who was respon- sible. Unlike the Grey brothers who are romantic optimists, he is barely in control of his hatred for whatever seems to him to be unloving or morally dead. He expresses this hatred through a series of explosive and dangerous machines built largely from the detritus of earlier stages of technology. With his rolling eyes and filthy Edwardian evening clothes, speaking in the affected rasp of a failed conjurer, he gives off an aura of real if ludicrous menace. Among his other targets are actors, whom he despises.>>
Thank you. I remember going to see 'An Evening of British Rubbish ' in 1963. I've told people about it and not found anyone else that I know now who saw it. So glad I wasn't dreaming.
Thank you.
''Look at the tomatoes i cant bloody find them!"
Stolen all those French and Spanish signs.... you've been very very naughty
wonderful. What’s Albion up to these days, I wonder? Willie Rushton RIP,
Just got introduced to this in a pub by some folk who remembered the BBC 2 launch that never was...gloriously nuts!
RIP Dougie, very much missed.
Splendid stuff ~ but is there a better resolution copy (where the picture doesn't break up etc) anywhere? a DVD copy perhaps? Many thanks for sharing...
Thank you so much for posting this, I've just been transfering old super 8 home movies and found a reel shot by my mother of a party at the rectory in 1972. My Mum knew Dougie and we went to stay with him and his kids Gideon? and Pandora at the rectory for a few days. I fondly remember Dougie letting me drive his Jeep around the neighbouring fields and riding a motorcycle with his son. The klaxon connected to the telephone was truly starteling when it sounded. The collection of vehicles around the rectory was massive. It has been a revalation to see The Alberts and I'm truly honoured to have met Dougie.
glorious absurdity
I watched the Alberts when they did a short piece at Leos Jazz Club in Windsor in late 50's.
someone dropped the bass on the second segment (ashley) naming no names - - thanks for that
A good evening :)
