The Science Of Gratitude
Happy Monday!
The holidays are nigh, so that means tensions are running high.
(See what I did there? 😉)
But in all seriousness, this season means something different for everyone.
For some, it is a time of joy and connection. For others, it’s a time of sadness, overstimulation, and/or chaos.
As a result, many find themselves in fight or flight mode without even realizing it.
This is because our brains are wired for survival and will scan our environment for potential dangers in order to keep us safe.
This pattern of thinking has the potential to go haywire, further causing us even more tension and frustration during times of busyness.
But the antidote to this is much simpler than we realize!
So tune into this week’s Unlocking the Magic of Leadership video where we are diving into a simple, actionable hack to implement today to combat holiday stress that will transpire into a highly beneficial habit that your future self will thank you for!

Happy Monday! Picture this with me… A hotel catches wind that many of their team members do not have washing machines or dryers at home, causing them to have to frequently visit a laundromat to keep up on having clean uniforms to wear. The hotel then puts a washer and dryer in their breakroom so their staff can launder their uniforms during their shift. Pretty considerate, right? This is just o...

Happy Monday! Raise your hand if you remember the actor and comedian Robin Williams! 🙋♀️ Known for his quick wit, iconic roles, and lines like: 'You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it,' and 'No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.' Robin Williams was more than just a famous face-he was a ray of sunshine whose legend lives on. Staying Within Your Realm Of Control This Election Season

Happy Monday! It’s an opportune time to dive into the “C” from my M.A.G.I.C model, “Control Your Chaos.” Why’s that, you ask? Well, let me explain by citing a memory I have dating back to childhood. My father recognized he had a problem with alcohol and decided to get sober (go dad!). He went to AA meetings, and being the youngster that I was, I, too, went to many of these meetings. And in case...

It's not about him. Great point! Comedians observe a situation, understand it, then interpret it to us from the viewpoint that makes us laugh
@@evankmutua3145 absolutely!
I'm really glad you brought in an ADHDer! Neurodivergent discourse should always be led by the people it impacts.
Something worth looking into is the difference between polychronic time (how ADHDers naturally perceive time) and monochronic time (how neuronormatives perceive time). The polychronic view sees time as interchangeable/fungible; it doesn't matter when the thing gets done, as long as it gets done. In the monochronic view, certain times have exclusive, predetermined purposes. There's more to both views, but that's the core. Both have strengths and weaknesses, but monochronic time is the "acceptable default" in normative Western society.
This is fantastic! Thank you! I am planning on more neurodivergent videos in the new year, and this is super helpful. I also haven't forgotten the suggestion on neurodivergence from the employee perspective. That will be coming as well. :)
I find it also helps me a lot when people communicate with me in writing. With verbal communication, I sometimes struggle to tell the difference between casual remarks and important information. When it's in writing, I'm a lot more confident that the info is correct and intentional. It also gives me time to process any emotions I may have so I can avoid fawning. (I've had some managers whom I suspect avoided written communication in order to get me to fawn, so I would be more compliant.)
@@JoeJoeTater I agree! Writing was always easier for me as well. Verbal could cause so many confusions and create a ripe environment in my head for overthinking.
Heads up: "high functioning" and "low functioning" are considered discriminatory by many people in the autism community. They are based in the medical model of disability rather than the social model of disability. The preferred terms are "low support needs" and "high support needs", respectively.
@@JoeJoeTater thanks for letting me know. That’s helpful. Videos starting on Monday will have the updated terminology.
@@SummerJelinek If you'd like to read more about the differences between the medical and social models of disability, I highly recommend the book Neuroqueer Heresies by Nick Walker. It really changed the way I see myself and society.
@@JoeJoeTater thank you. Will check it out.
Sounds promising! I look forward to the rest of the series. I would really like to hear about how to ask for accommodations without disclosing my neurotype. I'm not sure how to express my needs without also risking discrimination by my employer.
@@JoeJoeTater ooooo. Good question. This series was developed for leaders, but I’m thinking a new series needs to happen for neurodivergent employees. This would be a great topic. Let me put some thought into it. Thank you!
@@SummerJelinek Yeah, a "how to manage up when you're neurodivergent" series would be great! One way to look at disclosure from the perspective of leaders might be "how to avoid fishing questions". Like, when someone asks me to explain why I need a particular accommodation, I feel very pressured to disclose. That's tough because I really WANT to explain the "why" of things and be understood, but I also fear the discrimination and prejudice that may come with disclosing certain labels.
Hi Summer, great content. Thank you for sharing your story and life experiences, I appreciate you being open about your challenges and sharing the wisdom you've gained on your journey. I have suggestions about labels- the terms low functioning or high functioning are not the preferred terms for many in the community; the former can be pejorative and negate the talents a person has; while the latter can negate the struggles we regularly face when our disabilities are not readily apparent to others. A quote I borrowed from someone on Reddit: “high-functioning is used to deny support, low-functioning is used to deny agency” I've found the best terms commonly used in the community are those that describe our needs- (e.g., an autistic person /w high support needs or an autistic person with low support needs). Some people may also use medical terms like autism with intellectual disability or autism with a learning disability, which convey that the secondary feature is a separate condition from autism.
Love this! Thank you for sharing. When talking about them in the future, I will use high support and low support needs.
Courtney is a rockstar. It takes a lot of courage to talk about our vulnerabilities publicly, and I applaud Courtney for sharing her story. I'm sure this will help inspire other leaders.
Absolutely. She did such a wonderful job!
I am happy for you to have received your diagnosis and wish you all the best in your journey of discovery. You might want to change the title of this video to what is a neurodivergent or something along those lines. I thought based on the title that you were giving neurodivergent leadership advice for the workplace.
Hi Linda, Thanks for the comment. Were you thinking the video was speaking to leaders who are neurodivergent? The video was made as a kind of "neurodivergence 101" for those who lead in the workplace but are not neurodivergent themselves or want to learn more about different types of neurodivergence. Before I adjust the title, I want to ensure I understand the confusion so it doesn't add more down the road. Thanks again and I look forward to your reply.
❤❤❤❤
Thank you! Courtney did such an amazing job this week! 🥰
@@SummerJelinek hmm
Hi I was diagnosed with adhd in November last year. One of those "that makes sense" moments, and my work history has for sure been... Unique. Anyway great video
Absolutely. Once the diagnosis is in, everything clicks into place. For me it felt like the final puzzle piece had been found.
@@SummerJelinek I know what you mean, I always knew I was a bit different. I mean even friends would refer to me as crazy in a good way and my mum would say I'm eccentric. As strange as it seems though I never even considered adhd, I think the steotype kind of threw me off, as it makes us out to be running round and screaming all the time. I'm dual presenting so I'm only doing that half the time 😂.
I always joke that my goal is to be described as eccentric! And I feel you. What we learned about neurodivergence doesn’t fit what many of us experience. One of the reasons I wanted to do these videos, to help shed some light on the myths and falsities around it.
@@SummerJelinek eccentric is the best, life is too fleeting to live it like everyone else, the idea of being "normal" always seemed a little off putting to me. It's great you're raising awareness, you're doing a good job. I've actually been planning to make a video on here myself. Basically 2023 was not a great year for me and after receiving my diagnosis I had a lot to process so I did something very impulsive and frankly dangerous. I climbed the largest mountain in Wales at night during a storm by myself to take methylphenidate for the first time. I wasn't harmed, although did pass out at the top for 3 hours in 100mph wind
That sounds intense! Did you learn what you needed to?
Happy white history month, its July . Jesse Lee Peterson started it in 2017.

Thanks for this message Summer. It really hits home as a HR Manager. I find myself working a little harder to bring on the season cheer however it helps me to get over the "poor me" when I am helping someone at this time of year. This year my family decided on simple handmade gifts or just spending time together. I encourage all the employees to participate or not, in their own way. Happy Holidays to you.
Thank you good your video❤️
Take care of yourself and we'll see you in November!
Good for you!
Wishing you a month of renewal and many successes, and magical moments.

"Looking for reasons to not trust your employees..." so true. Leaders need to look for the ways employees are adding value and help them add more.
Absolutely! We will see what we look for and it is time we stopped looking for reasons to not trust. Thank you for jumping into the conversation!
No mask is the best part of post pandemic. :-)
I used to have face to face meetings all the time, now people stopped face to face meetings and have turned off their zoom camera. Seems like most live through fingers.
I have always been more of an extrovert. But I have definitely noticed that over the course of the pandemic and now coming out of it...I have become somewhat introverted. I am OK just hanging out at home by myself now. I notice that I don't feel as confident as I used to in new places or around new people. I miss that confidence!
