Lower Row River, Solo Bike Shuttle, 942cfs - Oregon Whitewater Kayaking
Did my first ever solo paddle w/ bike shuttle trip on Summer Solstice 2020. Fun combination of biking on the Row River trail, bushwhacking to the river, paddling a few fun rapids and driving around a beautiful area near Cottage Grove, OR. The left channel of rapid #3 had some nasty wood in it this time which hopefully flushes out soon.

5/9/2020: Bottom of the Gorge through Ledges rapid on the North Fork Middle Fork Willamette River. Lovely springtime 80 degree sunny weather! This is the best close to town class 3 run for Eugene, OR boaters IMO. It helps that it tends to stay runnable through April and May many years. It's a class fun classic! Music: The Knocks, "Classic (feat. POWERS)"
South Santiam Mountain House Snowy edition, 1800cfs - Oregon Whitewater Kayaking
Переглядів 5714 роки тому
1/13/2020: Cold beautiful snowy day on the upper most section of the South Santiam. I took a swim right out of the gate (not captured), ended up with bloody abraded knuckles and instantly regretted not wearing pogies. No one ran the rapid near the beginning of the run caused by new rockfall this year "Ferrous Oxslide", it had some unfortunate hanging branches in the outflow of the drop. I chose...
Long Tom Hole, 1750cfs

10/14/2019: Long Tom River just below the outflow dam on Fern Ridge Reservoir. The lake is drawn down by the Army Corps of Engineers every October ish which reveals a surfable hole, this level is on the high side of surfable. I don't really know what I'm doing in terms of surfing but had a fun time trying! This feature seems better for shorter boats. Music: Damien Jurado, "A.M. AM"
Upper Mckenzie River 29 mile solo paddle w/ bus shuttle
Переглядів 5225 років тому
6/12/19: Paddled the Upper Mckenzie from the USFS Ranger Station near Mckenzie Bridge to the EWEB Goodpasture Boat Landing at the head of Leaburg Lake. Stashed my boat in the woods near the put in and drove down to the takeout, taking the LTD Bus 91 back up the road to my boat. Long day with a decent amount of flat/slow water paddling but totally worth it overall. Beautiful!
North Umpqua River, "The Narrows" section - Oregon Whitewater Kayaking
Переглядів 2,9 тис.6 років тому
This is a top to bottom video of pretty much all the action on the ~ 2 mile Narrows section of the North Umpqua River. The upstream Copeland Creek gauge was 881cfs on this day, a low water summer level. Did this as a fun bonus run after paddling the dry creek to gravel bin section further upstream. The takeout we used was the "Narrows Wayside", it works fine but it is steep and has poison oak. ...

Abiqua Creek, 900's cfs - Oregon Whitewater Kayaking
Переглядів 5256 років тому
1/30/18: The original plan was Butte Creek this day, but rapidly rising brown water flows with new wood down led our group to find a close by plan B. Paddling a few miles of pushy class 2/3 on Abiqua Creek (a ways below the falls) salvaged the day! Music: Allen Walker, "Road to Somewhere".

11/22/17: Put in just below the gorge rapid (1st class 4, had some potentially dangerous wood if someone swam) and paddled down to the bridge at mp 13. Music: Miguel Migs & Aya, "The Distance".

Fall Creek Waterfall Park & Huck - Oregon Whitewater Kayaking
Lower Row is a great fun run. Lots of moderate rapids, and quick. Close to home. Thanks for the video. I ran all those just yesterday with a small group.
Why would you portage deadline falls???
The bottom section of the Canoe Canal and some other stretches upstream, are part of the Patterson Slough. The main flow of the Willamette went through there until 1895, when a major flood changed the riverbed to where it is today. The other sections were dug deeper and connected, to build the canal in 1973. At the top end of the lower section, a part branches off to the left and goes under a bridge. A friend and I once paddled our kayaks all the way up to where it goes through a large culvert under Interstate 5. It continues east through Springfield, where it is the main drainage canal for that city.
thx, I'm about to try this in a folding kayak for the first time in I want to try to figure out the short route I'm going, I wish I could see on the map where are you got in and where is the portage points are on the canal I don't understand, sometimes it seems like you were going up river and sometimes downriver... I really don't understand what you were doing the one time you put the front of your kayak into the rushing waterfall? That seemed dangerous 😬 Anyway, thanks for the video... It's definitely helpful, or it makes me feel better anyway I think I can do it, minus the slides that you went on 😅
He was going both up and down the canal in different sections of the video.
I am doing this soon! But, I think it's on a boat.. maybe kayak? wow, fun!
Where did you put in? Below the dam? And how long did this take?
You had a camera mishap at Spencer’s, but how was your run?
Where is the put in and take out for this run?
Nice
Thanks. I'm a 72 yo female and was wondering about this route. Looks easy.
Wonder if I’m allowed to use my small Jon boat with electric trolling motor. Probably not but I have a torn up shoulder making kayaking difficult.
That's an interesting question. Related to this is that electric-powered bicycles are allowed on off-road bike trails and are legally regarded as the same as human-powered ones. Check with the Eugene Dept. of Parks and Recreation for a definite answer on that. The traffic is never heavy on this canal, so your boat wouldn't likely be interfering with anyone.
Killer! I need to do the same thing. i live over by Florence. Real pain to get someone to go with me. Great idea to stash the boat and take bus.
Nice vid, I’d rather hear the river.
Good stuff.
Nice rapids, groovy tunes~
Fun video you put together! Thanks for sharing it!
Thanks!
Yah freakin’ hoo.
Dope brace!!!! Your skills on the water and sketchy situations are impeccable bro. Handled it like a boss
Great footage! What month was this?
Hey i'm from philomath just moved here a year ago, thanks for showing the run!
What flow do you think is a minimum for kayaking this section?
This section never gets too low as it’s dam controlled, never seen it below the 700’s which has plenty of water for these rapids
@@jharm8711 Thanks. We're planning a July 4th trip, will be mostly kayaking Sections 1, 2, & 4.
@@jharm8711 Thanks; we did Sections 1,2, & 4 at the 750-800 cfs level and it was fine.
If you ran that in 2021+ all those trees are gone along almost the entire highway due to wildfire
Really love this run! Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
I really appreciate your videos, John Harmon!
Wow! Is this above or below Fall Creek Reservoir?
Above the reservoir maybe 8-10 miles above bedrock campground on left side of road. Needs heavy rainfall to be runnable!
That was so great! I have always wondered what lies beyond the portage area crossing over into Springfield just under the I-5 bridge area- on the canoe canal that is. It was also cool to see where you got out and made it back the main parking lot. Thanks so much for posting!
At 1:40 you've just passed Autzen and the ducks are scurrying away from you, and so you say...?
If the Canada Geese shown were ducks, you would shout, "Go ducks!"
If I let such considerations hinder my comedic .... *oh crap they're geese*.
That shuttle rig!👌🏼
Kevin Hill one good thing that came out of COVID-19 for me is it got me to buy a bike rack attachment for my roof rack. Love having the flexibility of being able to bring the bike! And my Subie is going strong, 170K plus with only minor issues during its lifespan.
John Harmon, nice!! We just sold our ‘06 Legacy that looked very similar to yours. Great vehicles. And definitely good to have solid way to transport the bike. We did a lot of bike shuttling on recent paddling trip in Northern CA (Klamath and Smith). Good times on right road w good weather. Your route looked choice w that bike path!
Nice vid bro. If you can yopu might want to hook up with Pete(River King) He has a channel on youtube. River Kings. He is in South Carolina. Keep the vids coming bro.
Where do you put in at?
I think they call that tight gorge the Butte Crack. If they don't, they should.
awesome, just got a kayak. i live near clearwater park.
Fuckin' sweet!
Nice Vids of the Beautiful Breitenbush River, one of the BEST Oregon Rivers with it’s clear water, clean rapids (Most of the time when the logs are gone) and nice drops from start to finish!
you sub me john Harmon and i well sub you
I need to take this up. Eugene has a lot of beauty.. Recommendations of what type of gear and kyak to purchase.
What class is this section?
David Dudley I’ve only done it at summer flows 1000-1500cfs. I’ve heard it described as “an adventurous run for the class 3-3+ boater” which I’d agree with. At summer flows most of the run from big cliff dam to the fish ladder dam above packsaddle is class 3. The Narrows however is solid 4+ (portagable with a seal launch at the bottom) and Niagara is a long class 3 with that pinch between the rock walls at the end (can be a psychological obstacle for some). Guidebooks say it’s a class 4 run overall when it’s around 2500cfs. At higher flows than that (in the fall they release around 6K for awhile) Niagara becomes a very dangerous area with powerful eddies and undercurrents, not advised for boating. It’s a good summertime run for Willamette Valley boaters who are looking for a few bigger rapids than the Clackamas, Packsaddle run or McKenzie provide.
@@jharm8711How big of a seal launch is needed at the Narrows portage? I’ve been eyeing this run for a low flow summer run in the 1,000-1,200 range but I’m confident I’d want to portage the Narrows.
What’s the best time of year to hit this? I was just there today. Looks bad ass!
It looks like that route is about 6 miles, did it take you guys 2-3 hours? Water looks like it's flowing pretty good.
Tony Gomes I believe it took roughly 2-3 hours at 950cfs on the gauge for this section... This is a rainy season run only though, too low right now. I’ve also done it at 400cfs and it was runnable but WAY longer of a day.
Ahhh thanks for the heads up. I was scouting up Mary's river for put in and take out spots today.
Too low meaning too low to kayak on? Or too low for any whitewater? I've not kayaked before but a coworker got me interested. Do you know if this section on the Mary's would be good for working on general kayak handling skills at this time of the year? Thanks!
Matt Kremer this is a rainy season run only. It’s currently 39cfs on 6/28/18, this video was at 950cfs. There may be a few flat areas deep enough to float a kayak in but you couldn’t paddle this section as a whole, it’s just a shallow creek in the summer. If you’re in Corvallis I’d suggest starting with kayaking on the Willamette, Peoria to Corvallis is a good start.
Thanks for the ideas for put in and take out spots!
Thanks for posting this video. I always wondered what that section of river looked like.
:)
Sick brace!
Mason Moorman thanks! I was bracing against rocks underwater, just hung out there hoping it would spit me out which luckily it did.
Excellent compilation! I can see why you won the award. Great variety, cool story arc, perfect tunes, etc. Some lovely water, along with a few really nice boofs, and a log-jam swim that had my heart rate increasing! Thanks for posting this John!
Kevin Hill so glad you enjoyed it! I had fun making this one. Let’s paddle sometime 😀
I really enjoyed this. Thanks!
Thanks for posting, I had made it up to West D Boat Ramp and was contemplating going down the Willamette to my starting point. Was reassuring to see that you had used the same spot that I had marked on the map as a potential take-out location. Great loop for a couple hour paddle close to home.
