Once Upon a Time: Kansas photos and ukulele instrumental
Переглядів 472 роки тому
These photos were taken in western Harvey County, Kansas. The ukulele instrumental is the 1962 melody by Charles Strouse from the Broadway musical All American. I recorded it in three parts on the Jam Looper app on an Ohana baritone ukulele.
Grandmother Ocean
Переглядів 2902 роки тому
Although the words and music came to me in a transcription attributed to Alicia Merlady Bennett, I have been told it is part of an oral transmission whose source is unknown. Grandmother ocean, grandmother ocean The waves roll in and the waves roll out Grandmother ocean, grandmother ocean The waves roll in and the waves roll out I too have these cycles in my life I too have these waves I too hav...
70 Years of Synchronicity: A Magical Culmination

LONG-AWAITED HOMECOMING Seventy years ago, in 1952, two young women met in a regional accounting office for Singer Sewing Machine Company in Pasadena, California. One hailed from nearly 2,000 miles away in Brainerd, Minnesota. The other had recently arrived from Nampa, Idaho, 900 or so miles distant. The Minnesotan, age 18, had landed in California first and was assigned to train the younger wo...
Rainy Days & Mondays, ukulele edition

I first heard this song when I was 12, and I’d have sworn the opening lyrics said, “Talkin’ to myself and feelin’ low,” but it turns out they say “old” instead of “low.” I am chuckling, because I am now 51 years older than when I first heard the song and can therefore sing it with more authenticity! Karen Carpenter was all of 21 when she sang about feeling old, but in light of the fact she died...
American Tune: Recovered Roots
Переглядів 5352 роки тому
Paul Simon's 1973 hit, "American Tune" has a beautiful and familiar chord progression and melody. I had fun creating an arrangement and narrative that uncovers the melody's roots in Germany in about 1600 AD and follows them to America. The earliest known version was a love song by Hans Leo Hassler, "Mein G’müth ist mir verwirret," which basically means "I'm all mixed up."
CHOPSTICKS: 5 Variations with 5 Ukuleles

I worked on this project for a year, starting with John King’s arrangement. Along the way, I got interested in the composer of The Celebrated Chop Waltz. Her story is included.

Where the River Shannon Flows, ukulele instrumental
Переглядів 1163 роки тому
TAKE TIME TO MAKE TIME When I first started practicing an instrumental version of the 1906 song, “Where the River Shannon Flows” in early February, it was a way of pleasantly passing the time until St. Patrick’s Day. I soon realized that in order to be able to play the song at the indicated tempo of 100 beats per minute, two things would need to happen: (1) I’d need to become adept at using bot...
Wonderful Peace

UKULELE REVIVAL: WONDERFUL PEACE It’s been a while since I’ve done an outdoor ukulele Sunday song, but Spring seems to be well and truly arriving with wind, rain, birds, blooms and balms, so I took myself outside and sat on a rain-soaked chair and sang the first verse and chorus of a song mentioned recently by my parents, Morris & Eula-Adine Weigelt. They’ve been weathering some uncertainty lat...
How Can I Keep From Playing? | 2020 Collaboration
Переглядів 2623 роки тому
This long-distance family musical collaboration helped make the pandemic Christmas of 2020 more bearable. Thanks to LaDeana Hillier (piano), Claire Hillier (cello), and Akshay Venkatesh (viola) for uplifting me and my ukulele to sublime heights. This video was an amazing learning project for me, as I brought each instrument into the movie as a separate recording and balanced and synchronized th...

Mother's Evening Prayer | O Gentle Presence
So beautiful. What an uplifting way to start the morning. My heart is open and filled with LOVE! Thank you!!❤
I would love to have the chords for this so that I can play it! So sweet and beautiful!
I’ve looked for the traditional melody of this him for a long time! Didn’t have access to it so sang it to myself for years:). So glad to run across your sweet video! Will treasure and enjoy it often! Please sing “speak gently!” Thank you again!💖
That was really quite lovely!
10:08 a beautiful rendition of this beautiful ukulele I song!
Thank you very much. Learning the basic singing of the melodi from your playing. Very clear and easy to follow. Great ❤
I got the same Harmony Student Uke that you played at the beginning. I bought mine for 12 Dollars at an Antique market. Only has three strings and three Knobs so far. I love the way you play it on this video a lot more than when you strum it in your other video in which you play it. Thank You so much for Posting This. Have an Awesome Day . 😎
So good and sweet! Thank you for making this video.
Was missing my mom after seeing something on tv that reminded me of her. I go to you tube and this popped up. Talk about a msg. I know this song verbatim brought up in cs and it brought me to tears thinking whats the chances on the timing. Thank you.
I love stories like this. Thank you for taking time to tell me.
This hymn has been on my mind all day today so I decided to search it on UA-cam. What a sweet rendition...thank you for the blessing. A favorite of mind since a tiny girl in CS Sunday School. Always comforting to me....I miss hearing my mom humming or singing it as she went about her day. I am 76 now and she passed in 2013, but the music lives on here...soothing my soul & spirit. 🎶💞
So Good!!❤
Thank you for sharing "Wonderful Peace." Yes, the song; but also the wonderful peace you share just by who you are - and how you are! Bless you!
Fabulous~soooo lovely!
Thank you for touching my heart. Such a sweet renditi.
Thanks so much for sharing this blessed hymn. May I ask for the strumming pattern and chords? I would like to learn to play it on the ukulele. God bless you!
Would love to know the chords so I can play along.
Well done! Thank you.
Great job....thanks.
Beautiful! One of my favs! <3
That was lovely. Can you tell me where you sourced the chords.?
Phil, I am sorry I cannot recall. I think I may have found it in a 1970s hits songbook I bought at a thrift store, but I am not sure which one. If you could see my pile of music books, you’d understand! 😉
Love it.
Very nice
Really nice!
Lovely uke-playing. Thanks for all your efforts.
Whoa!!! I just had the perfect 'unwind from my work shift'!!! Love!!!
Love it! I’m looking for the chords
This was my mother's favorite song. her mother was a reader in the small montana rural church. Mom just passed away on 6/16, i can't tell you how many times she sang it to me. Her oldest sister is still living, she was a strong christian scientist her whole life, but about 3 years ago started having alzheimer's and now has no idea of who she is most of the time. a couple weeks ago before mom went into hospice care she called her sister and they sang this song together one more time. Im kicking myself for not recording it. thank you for putting this video out there, it has touched my heart
Thank you for sharing your story. It touched my heart. My deepest condolences on your loss.
Hope you can share the chords. Very nice! ❤
just lovely!
Wonderful.
this is really good, dude! I've never actually watched someone play this music with a single instrument, keep up the good work!
Omg how in the fckn world do you have 77 likes. Its is really rare to find someome playing old and unpopular song like you, I really really love Ink Spots. I hope that you countinue to make masterpieces like this.
You made me grin so big this morning. Thank you! I had only been playing the ukulele for 2 years when I made this video, but the joy of the instrument itself seems to inspire me to fun-loving heights and bypassing my self-consciousness as a newbie.
I remember hearing these hymns all the time since childhood, for I grew up in Christian Science. Years later...I treasure them more and more, for their value is far above rubies! And now, this one in particular...I am on the road of spiritual rebirth, in the process of becoming once more as a little child.
This has rapidly become a favourite. Repetition in music is wonderful and this has a drum-circle type of effect after listening for an hour. Lovely rendition, thank you for sharing. Happy birthday to your sister. I wonder how you would all sound doing "Long Time Traveller" by the Wailin' Jennys.
Thank you for your kind words!
This restores my peace Everytime I play it. Thank you.
I am so glad, Yvonne! That was certainly my intention.
i don't know if this account is still active but you play this so beautifully and I would LOVE a tutorial on how you are playing it with the fingerpicking and the strumming. I never seem to know when to stum and it just doesn't sound as full without the occasional stum. Thanks and well done :)
Thank you for the lovely story of connection across time and space. The Quantum Nonlocality and Excellent Singing Award is yours! :)
What a prestigious category in the Jinn Bug awards!
Beautiful!!!
What an extraordinary story. And lovely singing. Thank you.
What a beautiful song! It's raining here on the lonesome hill, the wind is howlin' and the woodburner is consuming beautiful wood that could have been used to make something.... and then you come along and sing a song impregnated with exactly that bluezy feeling that is now haunting for the last uplifting thoughts in this dark cloudy night. It makes me feel at ease, this is when I know that I'm still me!
Thank you. I find this creating for me the opposite of down. Knowing I'm not the only one. I hope you've found a muse (I saw their pics) or a clown to turn things around, upside down, feet off the ground, finding higher mounds...Peace & Blessings to you not only on this day but those you yet to found 🙃😘❤❤💙💛💜💙💛💜❤❤
Lovely job Marva. Excellent rainbow pictures too - did you take those?
Yes, those are all my photos!
@@marvaweigelt2302 Northern Ireland is the rainbow capital of the world, we have at least one a week; it rains a lot here. I've taken quite a few rainbow pics myself but none of them come close to yours. The light is just spectacular, so dramatic. Thanks so much and God bless you.
Thanks for your kind words, Mark!
AMEN, lovely song
Lovely. Thank you for sharing Marva.
Thank you. So simple and touching. Such a plaintive melody. I am remembering that once upon a time on July 4, I caught a snippet of Ken Burns' America, and this song was playing in the background. Much to think about. I think that once upon a time I'd realized that this is the tune of "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" but had forgotten it. I don't know enough about music theory to understand how it creates the mood that it does... But it does.
Mary, I appreciate your observations and reflections!
Love it!
Great rendition, P. Simon has always been one of my top ten favorite artists. I didn't know the history of the song, always a good day when you learn something new.
So beautiful. Thank you for sharing this, Marva!
Such a cool cover
