Elevated Hides in Scenario based Training
This K9 team successfully completed my detection scenario station at the Colorado K9 Conference. In this evolution, the team conducted a single-blind search, knowing only that they had two rooms to search without any information about the presence of hides. In one of the rooms, there was a narcotics hide weighing about half a pound, placed in the ceiling roughly 10 feet above the ground. As demonstrated, the team, like many others, noticed their dogs signaling "Something is here," despite the complexity being beyond the usual straightforward training scenarios.
Typically, the dog's odor training involves simpler and more accessible hides, unlike the challenging contexts encountered in real searches. This advanced training is designed to help handlers interpret their dogs' behavior in situations resembling actual operational deployments. The goal is to make training more realistic, identify any gaps, and allow teams to experience failure in a controlled setting to reduce the likelihood of failures during real searches.

    I like the search intensity of this dog. our team here in the Philippines also makes our training the same as what is happening in real life. in this kind of training the handler can exercise his decision making and reading of the dog. Also techniques can be developed on how to address a situation.

    Thank you for this podcast. I am currently training with SWDI through their on-line courses and Jens Franks instruction is in-depth and well explained, really such an amazing trainer - wonderful to see him in a North American podcast. Documenting training and planning before training changes everything - and this has been done by other and promoted by others (Simon Prins for instance). It puts the science into training and makes things so logical. It allows you to see what works and what dosen't work with the specific dog and it enables the trainer to see what doesn't work, and how to approach it differently for the dog in front of you instead of wasting time trying things that don't work for that dog - less frustration for both the dog and the trainer. Hopefully this podcast will encourage people to look more at the work being done in Europe with operant conditioning and a scientific approach to training dogs, rather the popular approach of specific "methods" by only a few well known or well advertised trainers.

    Hey, I love the video! Quick question If you put out a high hide and your dog is on odor but doesn't sit, which is the final indication, and instead goes into proprioception, would you reward him since, in his mind, he's sitting, or would you assist with a SIT command?

    • @marktrees4976

      @@Echoshadowflame obviously Cameron knows more than me, but I pay it. My thinking is I'm getting the behavior I'm looking for (COB to target odor) which is more important than the TFR. I found they are more likely to give you a TFR quicker, if they've been rewarded for COB. It's just important to know, they're truly in odor when you pay, and not guessing. IMO

      @@Echoshadowflame I don’t require the sit or (trained final response) when first teaching elevated or inaccessible hides. I reward the effort, acknowledgement and persistence of the dog towards the odor. Then, as the dog becomes more proficient at this type of task, then I could require the train to final response if I wish to do so. But again in the beginning, we must reward and acknowledge the effort and acknowledgment of the odor…. I want the dog to understand. The odor is the most important part not the sit or TFR.

      @@FordK9 Hey back to my question If the dog is already fully trained, knows his final response, and is 10-foot certified, would you reward the dog on proprioception, or would you assist with a sit? Obviously, we don’t want the dogs to be handler-dependent, but I was having this conversation with another trainer and he said to help with a sit However, if the dog thinks he's sitting, why not reward him when he’s in proprioception? And in the dogs head he did everything by himself so it’s in his favor

    Question about risk of false alert in this long searches: Would it be helpful in training-scenarios to check the area for the search-item by the handler before give the dog a reward? I think of simon prins result tracker method or would this not work for this kind of training scenario? For me it was hard to see Elmos indication in the second find.. Thank you 😊

  • @miketastic82
    @miketastic82 14 днів тому

    Were you ever thinking about ending the deployment without Ammo finding the second stim because of such a long search and only changes in behaviour? What do you weigh up when deploying a dog in an area for a long time/multiple times and risking the dog giving a false response because you are almost telling the dog there must be something here because you have deployed in that same area/had such a long deployment without a find or do you just work scenarios like that into your training?

    • @FordK9
      @FordK9 14 днів тому

      @@miketastic82 yes we do numerous blank searches because this is also the reality of real deployment. So that prepares a dog for extended periods of searching. In addition to this I take into consideration the information from the the deployment briefing which tells me how much information in regards to the possibility of shell casings or a firearm in the area exists if they are kind of reaching and hoping that there’s something there and just want the dog to do the work for them many times I can read pretty quickly there’s nothing there. When there is more credible information, such as witnesses seeing firearms discharged for a certain area then I know the probability is higher and we must work the area as thoroughly as possible, which would definitely mean there are breaks and evaluating how to approach or dissect the search area. So in training, I make sure I show the dog all of these various potentials and prepare them as best I can for the probability of extended searches, searches with breaks and searches with we keep working it as best we can my dog understands. It gets rewarded for searching randomly and it gets rewarded for finding Target odor… this helps alleviate potential of false indications because the dog doesn’t have to be finding something in order to get a reward

    0:50 it looks like he is caught in converging odor. 1:12 he starts showing elevated behavior. My guess is that he disturbed the source as he walked through at 0:50 You stepped in, and applied spatial pressure pushing him off that odor and flinging it toward the wall/counter lip, making it difficult to source. My dog knows she wont get paid at an old hide, but sometimes she will return to one to parse out which molecules belong to which hides in a converging odor puzzle. I have worked with my dog from a very young age with scent training on my own. My dog is an Australian Cattle Dog and extremely high energy. I taught her to alert by sitting and looking at me. I wanted to go further with her training and signed up for a class. Scent 1 was required before going further. The instructor is wanting me to retrain my dog to a standing nose freeze. This seems to be confusing and frustrating my dog and she is starting to show less enthusiasm for scent work. Also going back to getting paid for just smelling the object and not searching for it, seems to be diminishing her enthusiasm for searching. Should I quit the class?

      In my opinion, you should always advocate for what’s best with your dog. Even though a trainer may know more about a particular discipline they don’t know what’s best for your dog and some cases. In this particular case a type of indication, such as a focus is in many times a cosmetic desire by a handler or trainer. if your dog is becoming confused or losing motivation to do the Detection work then this is a far bigger issue than a cosmetic appearance of an indication. In some cases, it is important to create focus at the source of odor for clarity but if this is just for fun and for sport, there are tons of teams out there who do not have a focus type indication yet still do quite well within the program. Again, always advocate for what’s best for your dog and have an open conversation with your trainer.

      @@FordK9 Thank you very much for your reply. This is what my gut was telling me. Early in my dog's training, in puppy class, I deferred to a trainer about something and I've regretted it ever since. I'm getting the same gut feeling about this issue.
