I surfed this day at Hammonds, and was on the beach when Curren showed up. He borrowed a board from a guy I went to high school with (Arrow). He paddled out and just caught two waves. That's so true, he was my classmate from small kid time, showed me 1 quick move hitting 3 places in 1 motion ,gouge or , rake eyes, strike crouch, finish off strike to head the last move.. Unreal and targeting the main points! He was way ahead of the times! Aloha MK

I grew up surfing Hammond's in the early-mid 70s with Tom (we called him Tommy back then) and others. It was clear then he had a special gift. Occasionally his dad, Pat, would come out when it got big. I had the good fortune of having Pat make me a board once. Unfortunately it got stolen on a trip down to Baja. Many great days out at Hammond's with just friends. Many wonderful memories.

Hammond's is where I learned to surf back in 1964. Rode my bike down from Schoolhouse Road. There was a pier at the Coral Casino. Was a huge mansion off to the right of a lawn that looked like a golf course at Hammonds. It was the Hammond estate. Single fin, no leg ropes, shitty wetsuits, no Internet and often empty. And at Rincon you could park your car up on the highway with a magnificent view of the cove.
Dang, I can only imagine. It's where I learned to surf in the early 90s. I lived on Schoolhouse Road, too! I was able to climb onto my roof and see a tiny sliver of ocean - I'd check that to see if it was windy. We'd spend the flat summers spear fishing at Hammonds.
@@blueskiesaboveus My house was corner of Hot Springs Road and Schoolhouse Road. There was a crew of us groms surfing Hammonds, Miramar, Firnalds and Rincon if our parents would drive us there. My first board was a 9'2"Yater. Worked all summer out on East Valley Road cleaning horse stables. Paid $35 for it but had to share it with my cousin as he paid half.

I don't think I ever saw it that big. Used to watch the much younger Tommy Curren surf there when he was 9. Even 3' was an overhead day for him.
