    If you want a good book to read in line with the academic works of the medieval works you've covered prior, you should read Dionysos, Myth and Cultus by Walter F Otto. Fundamentally one of the best insights into Hellenic paganism bar none, to the point he even affirmed dates of the god's worship which was only vindicated through archaeology decades after his death (via cultural insight, he ascribed the god as dating far earlier than originally thought).

    Thank you for this review! I was primarily interested in gauging the size, it seems like it's on the smaller size. I like to hold bigger manga, with bigger pictures too obviously, but it doesn't look too small. After a good friend brought the series to my attention I watched the first episode today and loved it. Even as a boy almost everything she does and feels hit close to home. Had a great time overall and I'm about to order the first volume! Was so glad to see that despite a short anime, the series is apparently still ongoing!

    I had to watch the video three times…. I kept getting distracted wondering what the blue jay meme picture says. As well as the WV picture… I’m from WV… and that little feller strikes me as the most regal one I’ve yet seen. I kept trying to think of a funny kingly nickname for him… but I have no humor. Anyway, Awesome video! Oddly informative for a book review. I am of an unshakeable conviction that all books should be picture books. Every. Single. One. So I was drawn here by a writing topic that I figured would necessarily require the book to be one of…. Pictures. 10/10 +10 for a christological picture book. +6 for stained glass. +2 for the fun book shelf +1 cause I’m sexually attracted to any book that can accurately be described as a “pamphlet” (short in length) -3 for black and white So what’s that…. Like 26/10? Side note: Are you saying casseroles? They glimpsed information about stained glass windows from… Casseroles? An additional +4 if so. 30/10 I will definitely be seeking to acquire said picture book.

      I will also say that there are two versions of the manhwa the 16 plus version which you are reading already and the 19 plus version which is the uncensored version. The first two books of each version are more or less the same while starting from book 3 there will be some obvious differences.

      Thank you for your comments! They are very helpful. It was around the first kiss that I started thinking I was missing something. I was not looking at the hierogplyphics at all, I thought they were decoration to set the scene. Now I want to get these books back out to review them! I did review the kiss scene over and over trying to figure out what exactly had happened there since I had questions. As for the two types, my library has this 16 version and I doubt they will get the 19 version. I assume the 19 version has either more explicit or violent content, neither of which I prefer, but if the plot is substantially different I may need to at least reference it to see what happens. I am also enjoying the intrigue that is going on and the political manipulating that has to happen in the story. Great review! I think you were right to contest her dismissal of the renaissance as integral to european history. Like you, I found the argument interesting, especially since most countries, even european ones, don't talk about "The Renaissance" as an era from a national context. The tone used and simplistic reasoning for not finding it important was definitely not fitting though!

    • @badbettybooks4001
      @badbettybooks4001 29 днів тому

      Thanks for the comment! As I mentioned, I would be open to hearing her idea, but I don't think this book was the time or place. And to quote her reasoning from the book :"The 'Renaissance' is a problematic idea because it focuses on Italian art, while equally amazing art was being made across Europe, sometimes earlier" and she then goes on to call out Jan van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch, and Albrecht Dürer as examples. This was the quote I forgot to tab before filming so I couldn't find it, but I found this argument to be really weak and not in line with any Humanities, Art History, or European History course I have ever taken.

    The thing is, before the Enlightenment, craftspeople _were_ artists. The definition of art and artist has changed, but we treat it todays as if it had always meant what it means today. Thank you for the review, this book sounds interesting. Especially about women, as I know women were kept out of most paid crafts, but then again the middle ages were surprisingly not as harsh on women as some later ages. Shows progress is not always linear.

As for recommendations, I am not sure I am the most well-read in literature that stems from the medieval era. I have read many of the Icelandic sagas for a class on Icelandic history I took in college. I remember enjoying those. I also enjoyed reading Beowulf. I feel like it is late medieval, if it can be considered medieval at all, but I enjoyed Dante's Inferno as well. I read that as part of a Humanities course in college and the discussion was great. In the past year I have read Forbidden Rites which dissects a surviving manuscript on necromancy magic from the middle ages. I also read A Medieval Book of Beasts: The Second Family Beastiary, which was the text + commentary from a beastiary. I also read and loved Basilisks and Beowulf by Tim Flight which discussed the role of monsters in Anglo-Saxon literature. Hopefully something in this wall of text piques your interest!

      @@badbettybooks4001 Thank you! I feel particularly drawn to the Icelandic sagas, I've heard that the writing style inspired some modern authors which is interesting. Forbidden Rites also sounds intriguing!
