Asking Real Questions: Exploring the Inquiry Competency w/Sheila Liming
In this workshop, we explore the two sides of classroom-based inquiry: how to frame and ask questions of our students and, in return, how to solicit good questions from them. We work from Pat Hutchings’ “Taxonomy of Questions,” which posits that there are four types of questions that guide inquiry in the classroom. We then expand into a discussion of methods that are designed to encourage the asking of questions at all four of those levels. The aim will be to devise and rehearse strategies for assessing inquiry, and to move beyond the stalemate of “right vs. wrong” or “yes vs. no.”
